FAH Confucius Institute workshop – Beyond Cultural Encounters : Chinese and Portuguese artists – stories about their joint efforts

This workshop invites local Macanese, Macanese-Portuguese and Portuguese artists to share their experiences of creating art works in cross-cultural settings, their understandings of the history and characteristics of inter-cultural art practices in Macau, their stories about cooperating with Chinese and Portuguese Macanese artists, and, finally, their perspectives with regard to the innovation and the aesthetic values of the art forms created in Macau as a place that mixes traditional Chinese and Portuguese culture elements.
Leong Iok Fai
A local Macanese artist of Chinese calligraphy, painting, seal carving, and Western oil painting. Leong has contributed and organized more than twenty exhibitions since he started learning Chinese and Western art from his teacher Chiu Vai Fu 50 years ago. He is the current Executive President of the Macau Orient Calligraphy and Painting Association.
Gonçalo Cardoso de Menezes
A Portuguese architect born in Lisbon, 1964. He was graduated from the Department of architecture, Technical University of Lisbon in 1990. He started his career as an architect at Macau in 1990. Design is part of his professional activity, he has participated in various group exhibitions of architectural design. Painting (including acrylic and watercolour) is his amateur interest.
André Aveline António
A Portuguese Macanese born in Macau, 1954. António started learning art since 2012, for the appreciation of artworks in museums. Starting from 2016, he learns from Leong Iok Fai about sketching, Chinese painting and Chinese calligraphy. Together with Leong and his friends, they found the Macau Orient Calligraphy and Painting Association in 2017. He participated in various exhibitions, including one at the gallery of the Rui Cunha Foundation.
