This talk summarizes a series of psycholinguistic experiments on Chinese character learning by native (L1) and non-native (L2) speakers of Chinese. For L2 speakers, depending on the target character types (i.e., simple or complex
characters), the effects of participant individual differences in working memory and Chinese proficiency varied. Pedagogical implications and applications drawn from the findings are discussed in the context of learning and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
