If you want to learn Portuguese just for the fun of it, you are also most welcome to join us!

DESIGN YOUR SUMMER PROGRAMME

The 2020 edition of the well-known University of Macau Summer Course organised by the Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities gives students the opportunity to design their own distance learning theme-based programme.

Students will be assigned to a language course and chose the theme-based courses they want to attend.

Sign up for the theme-based courses upon registration! Please read CERTIFICATE of ATTENDANCE and CERTIFICATE of ACHIEVEMENT below.

THE 34th SUMMER COURSE PROGRAMME

The Summer program offers general language courses and theme-based courses.

The language offer is organised in 5 different CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) levels ranging from A1 (Beginner) to C1 (Advanced).

Theme-based courses cover the following areas: cinema, education, language education, gastronomy, history, linguistics, literature, music, society and translation.

Students can take those classes that fit best their personal, academic and professional interests. This is therefore an opportunity not to be missed! Please read below the abstracts table and check the timetable.

Students in A1 and A2 language classes may benefit from 50 hours of language training. In addition, they may benefit from the 10-hour task-based Gastronomy and Music workshops, where culture is embedded in language.

Students in B1, B2 and C1 language classes may benefit from 45 hours of language training. In addition, they may benefit from as much as they want out of the 56-hour theme-based offer, where cultural topics are embedded in B1 to C2 language classes.

GENERAL LANGUAGE COURSES

You will be assigned to one of the following courses once you have taken the placement test.

Language courses include listening, speaking, reading and writing activities as well as the study of key grammatical features and vocabulary for each level. Syllabi will be available on MOODLE.

All courses aim at helping participants to develop their linguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic and sociocultural competences in Portuguese as well as to raise their intercultural awareness.

Participants who will be attending a beginner or an elementary course may find it useful to attend Music and Gastronomy courses to enhance their grammar and vocabulary as well as their sociocultural knowledge.

THEME-BASED COURSES

Please read the course descriptions below and make your choices!

The registration form lists the theme-based courses detailed below. When you register, please tick the boxes of the courses you want to take. As they don´t overlap, YOU MAY CHOOSE ALL OF THEM.

These courses are targeted at participants who attend A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels. The language levels shown in the theme-based table below are just a suggestion. If your skills in Portuguese are a bit lower, you are also very welcome to join the course although you may have to be prepared to work harder. If your skills in Portuguese are higher, you will probably feel very confident.

Participants taking elementary classes are also welcome. However, they may find Music and Gastronomy courses more adequate to supplement their study of the language and the culture.

TIMETABLE

The timetable made available now may be subject to changes. Courses on offer do not overlap.

GETTING TO KNOW MACAU AND PORTUGAL BETTER

Participants will be able to watch short videos about Macau covering topics like

  • The Portuguese-speaking communities in Macau
  • The Chinese community in Macau
  • The Macanese community in Portugal: Intercultural approaches

Participants will also have the possibility of visiting museums, libraries and other relevant locations in Portugal.

These videos will be made available on MOODLE.
