Time:

Venue:

Description:

Topic: Using online academic corpus technology to improve your university writing

Speaker: Dr. Sean Grant (ELC Senior Instructor)

Description: A corpus is a database of language, which is often compiled based on a particular domain of communication. These domains include written texts used within academic contexts. One practical purpose for using these tools is to explore how different English terms and phrases are used within authentic academic writing contexts.

In this session, students will learn how to access and use some of the fundamental functions and tools of two major online corpora. They will then analyze some of their own writing using the corpus tools to make informed decisions about the authenticity and appropriateness of the language used within their writing. In short, students will practice using corpus tools to help improve their university writing.

**Prior to the workshop students will need to:

  • Register for free access to the Corpus of Contemporary American English (https://corpus.byu.edu/coca/)
  • Bring or have online access to an essay or other piece of academic writing from their major in Microsoft Word format
