ELC Guest Talk – “Asian Beauty: Racism, Sexism, and Beauty Ideals” [Smart Point]
Dr. Esther Hio-Tong Castillo
8 May 2019
16:00 - 17:00
E21 Blackbox Theatre
We do not come into this world as beautiful or not. Rather, the world comes into us. Our society constructs ideals of beauty, judges who is beautiful, and controls who deserves to be admired. In an increasingly globalized world, culture, history, media, and power intersect to create ever more homogenizing ideas of “beauty”. In this talk, Dr. Esther Hio-Tong Castillo will discuss how beauty standards have changed over time and across different places, shed light on how beauty ideals are used to perpetuate racism and sexism, and explore strategies to create new healthy inclusive standards of beauty.
Dr. Esther Hio-Tong Castillo is a feminist, educator and sociologist. She grew up in Macau and currently lives and works in Philadelphia in the United States. Dr. Castillo received her MA in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University and her Ph.D. in Sociology from Temple University in Philadelphia. Courses she has taught at the university level include Introduction to Sociology, Gender in America, Human Sexuality, Race and Racism, and Urban Sociology.
