Project-based learning provides an interesting approach to English language teaching that has the potential to engage students in meaningful activities and language learning tasks. In this presentation, I will begin by outlining some of the perceived benefits of project-based learning. Then, I will refer to an example of a project-based course developed for science students learning English for science at a university in Hong Kong. This is a course that was structured around an English for a science project, in which students carried out a simple field study and reported on it in two ways: 1) as a multimodal digital video scientific documentary uploaded to YouTube (group work); 2) as a written scientific report (individual work). I will describe the design process adopted in this course, especially the following kinds of practical considerations: curriculum design, project design, materials design, and technology integration. I will also present research into the kinds of products that students have created as well as the process that students go through and illustrate some of the main benefits of project-based learning on this course.
