Dr. Yuen Yi Lo from the University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Education, visited the ELC from December 1 – 7, 2015 to deliver two inspiring professional development workshops.
In the first workshop, Dr. Lo shared her studies on the Medium of Instruction in Hong Kong schools. In particular, she presented a meta-analysis summarizing the effects of using English as the medium of instruction on students’ academic achievements and affective aspects. She also illustrated the differences in teacher-student interaction patterns in classrooms using different languages as the medium of instruction. The findings of these studies shed light on the trend and challenges of using English as a Medium of Instruction at the tertiary level.
