This is a call for participation of the 1st Macao Interpreting Contest (English-Chinese), the winners of which will represent Macao to join the Cross-Strait Interpreting Competition to be held in Taiwan in March 2016.
The Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest is an influential annual event jointly organized by Xiamen University and the Taiwan Association of Translation and Interpretation under the support of the Ministry of Education and the Taiwan Affairs Office. Started in 2009, the contest has attracted more than 10,000 contestants from over 800 institutions of higher learning in the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, including most of the key universities offering translation and oral interpreting training programs. The event has been covered by mainstream media organizations across the two sides of the Taiwan Strait such as China Central Television (CCTV), China Daily, Television Broadcasts Satellite (TVBS), Taiwan Television (TTV), Eastern Broadcasting (EBC), Xinhua News Agency and the Phoenix.
The Grand Final of the 6th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest is to be held in Taiwan in March 2016, and Macao contestants are to enter the arena for the first time. Regional selection rounds will have to be held prior to the Grand Final. The Department of English of the University of Macau is hosting the First Macao Interpreting Contest (English-Chinese) in December 2015 to select contestants who are to represent the Macao Special Administrative Region at the Grand Final.
Details of the Contest:
The contest consists of two rounds.
1. The first round is to be held on 25th November, 2015 to select 12 Contestants to the final round. Contestants will be required to interpret a 60-90 second English speech into Mandarin.
Time and Venue: TO BE ANNOUNCED.
2. The final round, which is also the Macao Regional Final of the 6th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest, is to be held on 5th December, 2015 to select 3 winners to represent Macao at the Grand Final of the 6th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest.
The final contains two parts:
Part One: Contestants are required to deliver the main idea of a 60-second Mandarin speech into English in 45 seconds without taking notes.
Part Two: Contestants are required to do consecutive interpreting for a Mandarin speaker and an English speaker having a dialogue with the help of notes.
Criteria for Evaluation:
- Correct understanding of the source speech.
- Fluency and naturalness of expression in the target language.
- Overall delivery
- One First Prize (Coupon equivalent of MOP$1,000)
- Two Second Prizes (Coupon equivalent of MOP$500)
- Three Third Prizes (Coupon equivalent of MOP$300)
** Note: Winners of First Prize and Second Prizes will represent the Macao SAR at the Grand Final of the 6th Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest to be held in Taiwan in March 2016.
The Panel includes experts in translation/interpreting from the University of Macau and the Macao Polytechnic Institute.
Who Can Join:
All undergraduate and postgraduate students (part-time and full-time) currently studying at institutions of higher learning in Macao are eligible.
