SUMMARY:FAH-CPC: Portuguese Culture Course
DESCRIPTION:Course Outline:\nThe course consists of a total of 8 sessions of 2 hours each\, and aims to provide an introduction to the essentials of Portuguese as a variety of cultural domains\, material and immaterial. At the end of the course\, the audience is expected to be better prepared to understand the cultural references driving Portuguese presence in Macao and the world. \nTopics:\nClass 1. An identity centered on language. Portuguese and other languages in Portugal. General introduction to Portuguese language history and geography\, past and present.\nClass 2. The growth of a country in feudal times. Lyricism and the feminine: cantigas de amigo\, Rainha Santa Isabel (and D. Dinis)\, Inês de Castro\, Menina e Moça\, “Barbara the slave”. Medieval poetry and contemporary popular music.\nClass 3. The establishment of a nation in history\, literature and art. Batalha\, Fernão Lopes\, Nuno Gonçalves.\nClass 4. Expansion and the East I: literature out of history. Three authors (Gil Vicente\, Luís de Camões and Fernão Mendes Pinto) and three texts (Índia\, Os Lusíadas\, Peregrinação). Sixteenth-century travel and contemporary popular music: Fausto Bordalo Dias.\nClass 5. Expansion and the East II: stories and myths. The shipwreck of Sepúlveda and King Sebastião in history\, contemporary music and film.\nClass 6. The second Portuguese empire: Brazil\, from António Vieira and the Gold Cycle to Independence. The third Portuguese empire: Africa\, from the Rose-Coloured Map to the Colonial Wars.\nClass 7. Contemporary Portugal I. Nationalist symbolism and commemoration. The cockerel from Barcelos and other handicrafts. Popular music before the Carnation Revolution (1974): Lisbon fado\, Coimbra fado/balada and back to lyric.\nClass 8. Contemporary Portugal II. History and art after the Carnation Revolution. Popular traditions today. \nSpeaker:\nProfessor Hélio Alves joined the University of Macau as Associate Professor of Portuguese Literature in January 2019. He is a well-known scholar of Renaissance and Early Modern Portuguese and Comparative Literature\, and also the director of Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Teaching and Training Centre (CPC). \nSeats are limited to 20 and registrations are on a first-come-first-served basis. SUMMARY:FAH-DHIST Guest Lecture – ‘Minnan People in Macau and Their Social Formation During the Ming and Qing Dynasty 明清時期的澳門閩南人及社會形態’
DESCRIPTION:Minnan People in Macau and Their Social Formation During the Ming and Qing Dynasty \nAbstract: \nMacau is an important port which not only connects the western and Chinese society\, but also a crucial part of Asia maritime economic circle. Minnan people participated actively in the maritime world during the Ming and Qing dynasty\, they were the group of people that had the closest relationship with the Portuguese in Macau. This speech will focus on the early activities of one Fujian merchant Yan Qisheng around Canton area; Mengshuizhaicundu and its stigmatizing writing about the image of Fujian merchants; transnational marriages of Zheng family in Macau; the early Qing seigniors\, Fujian merchants and the trade with Japanese ships; the transformation of Fujian merchant guild’s organization in Macau; the illegal trade of Fujian boatmen in Macau and other topics. These topics will bring up a comprehensive analysis about Minnan people in Macau during these five hundred years. \n  \n明清時期的澳門閩南人及社會形態 \n  \n內容摘要： \n明清時期，澳門是西方與中國社會橋接的重要口岸，也是亞洲海洋經濟圈的重要一環。閩南人活躍在明清時期的海洋地帶，也是與澳門葡人交往最為密切的地域人群。本論題將圍繞著閩商嚴啟盛在粵海的早期活動、《盟水齋存牘》與閩商形象的汙名化書寫，鄭氏家族的澳門跨國婚姻，清初藩王、閩商與唐船貿易、清代澳門閩商會館組織的演變、閩籍船戶在澳門的非法貿易等議題對500多年的澳門閩南人進行長時段全景性分析。
