SUMMARY:[Call for Presentations] The 1st FAH Macao Humanities Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:FAH will launch the 1st ROUNDTABLE in May this year. The FAH is committed to achieving research excellence while striving for the nurturing of a research sharing culture. The Roundtable will serve as an excellent platform for FAH colleagues and PhD students to share and showcase their ongoing or recent research with their colleagues and students. As many of you may have experienced in your research endeavor\, sharing and discussing a research project and its (preliminary) findings with colleagues and students is a rewarding experience in that feedback received through this kind of exchange of ideas and insights often helps in enhancing the quality of the publications. \n  \nTo that aim\, the Organizing Committee of the MACAO HUMANITIES ROUNDTABLE cordially invites all FAH academic staff\, and the PhD students (who have passed their thesis proposal assessment)\, to present their research at this event. DESCRIPTION:Workshop 1 – Business Email Writing: Communication in Real-Life Situations and Challenges\nEmail is an important method of communication in the workplace\, and many of you will write English emails for business and workplace communication after entering the workforce. When stereotypes are hold against particular groups of people according to their characteristic differences  (e.g. categorized by gender\, nationality\, ethnicity or even sexuality)\, this could be fundamentally detrimental to people’s intercultural competence and their ability to communicate globally and boundlessly\, which are specifically important for any language learners. Likewise\, as an effective English user\, students should be aware of any inappropriate presumptions in the language that they use and other people use while being able to question\, analyze\, criticize and correct these prejudices. In other words\, to identify stereotypes essentially involves critical thinking skills as students will need to challenge a widely-believed presumption which may possibly also be believed by themselves. So we´d like to suggest that the students might be conscientious of what should learn at the very beginning of the course and how can practice the knowledge leant in class. Taking the translation for example\, we should know very well not only Portuguese but also our mother tongue before we can start to do so\, but it is also important for us to know more about the society\, the culture\, the literature and so on\, of the countries. \nGUEST BIOGRAPHY \nProf. Xu Yixing\, Catarina\, is the Director of the Portuguese Department and Full Professor at the Shanghai University of International Studies\, Foreign Corresponding Academician of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences\, holder of the Grau Comendador da Ordem do Mérito decorated by the former President of the Portuguese Republic\, Prof. Cavaco Silva\, author of didactic materials for Chinese PLE learners such as Curso de Português para Chineses\, and translator of Portuguese authors such as Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and António Lobo Antunes.
