SUMMARY:DHIST guest lecture:

SUMMARY:DHIST guest lecture:

SUMMARY:Personal Materials and Archives: Filmmakers of Shanghai in 1950s
DESCRIPTION:Zhang Jishun\, former secretary of the party of East China Normal University\, is a prominent expert in modern history of Shanghai. She is currently a research fellow of Si-mian Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities\, ECNU. This lecture is a case study of micro-history and soul-history. In this lecture Prof. Zhang will demonstrate how an actress in Shanghai response to the cultural reform led by the new government in the 1950s. This is a good case to comprehend the interactions between political powers and individuals in the 1950s.

SUMMARY:The Enemy-radio Listeners: Technology and Agency in Socialist China
DESCRIPTION:Socialist China was usually understood as a totalized society with strict control over the flow of information. In this talk\, Dr. Wang Yu complicates the above understanding by exploring the popular practice of listening to foreign radio stations in the 1950s and 1960s China. He will bring into light this largely unknown group of radio users and answer the following questions: who were they\, when\, how\, and why did they listen\, and more importantly\, how did they interact with the state as they process the information from the political power beyond state-borders? Wang suggests that the state’s failure to control the flow of information not only had to do with its technological limits but also was closely related to a few other geopolitical and social issues. This talk also invites the audience to rethink the limit of the state in the age of technological innovation and globalization. \n

SUMMARY:The May Fourth Movement in the American Media: A New Perspective of China's Radical Era
DESCRIPTION:After the outbreak of the May Fourth Movement\, the American media carried out continuous reports\, providing a Western perspective on understanding the movement and important historical records of the US attitude towards the May Fourth Movement at that time. These reports not only revealed the process of this movement in detail but also\, particularly important\, they foresaw China ushering in a new era. As the American media and Americans in China clearly expressed their support for China on the Shandong issue\, Japan began to spread rumors that the movement was directed by the United States behind the scenes\, trying to transfer the responsibility for the anger of the Chinese people caused by its aggressive actions to the Americans. The root cause of the contradiction between the United States and Japan was that the United States wanted to stop Japan’s hegemony in China in order to facilitate the implementation of the open door policy in the Far East. Therefore\, it had a very sharp contradiction with Japan’s ambition to seize Chinese territory. \nRegister now:

SUMMARY:The Spatial Distribution of Chinese Manufacturing Industry in 1933: and A Discussion on the Spatial Process of Late-Developing Countries’ Modernization 1933
DESCRIPTION:A database based on A Survey Report of Chinese Industry by Liu Dajun and other statistics in 1930s has been constructed as the main source for this research. This database reveals that the geographic industrial distribution of China in 1933 demonstrated a trend “contiguous distribution in the east\, scattered distribution in the west”. This trend was caused by the distinguishes of the eastern and western region in natural resources\, transportation conditions and connections with external markets. Without support form a powerful state\, the industrialization of modern China faced many obstacles\, such as the shortage of market\, spatial gap between the eastern region and the western region\, vicious competition among different regions and the mismatch of natural resources and investment and professional human resources.

SUMMARY:The Floating People and the Stationary Order: The Formation of Traditional Social and Spatial Structure in the Greater Bay Area
\n  \nThe Floating People and the Stationary Order: The Formation of Traditional Social and Spatial Structure in the Greater Bay Area \nDuring ancient time\, most part of the area what now we call “the Greater Bay Area” were still under the sea. There were just many islands in this bay. Many people based on boats or islands lived in this big bay. After the Song dynasty\, many lands brought by sedimentary sand (sand-lands) emerged around those islands. With the expansion of those new lands\, many people living on boats became settled farmers. After the Ming dynasty\, the political order in this area was constructed by the state. Relying on the state power\, those settled farmers monopoly on the exploitation of the new emerging sand-lands. A dichotomy of farmlands and sand-lands became fixed. The distinguishment of the social hierarchy between the great clans living on farmlands and the Tanka people living on sand-lands emerged. \n

DESCRIPTION:Dog Racing in Macau: Commodification\, Gambling Culture\, and the Place of Non-human Animals in the City \nFor a few years in the 1930s and then for another fifty-five years since 1963\, greyhound racing was one of the attractions that helped boost Macau’s repertoire as the Monte Carlo of the East\, the Las Vegas of Asia\, Asia’s sin city\, and the gambling capital of the Far East. Albeit short-lived\, the city’s pioneering canidrome positioned the Portuguese colony at the centre of a global trend. The reopening and expansion of the dog-racing business in the 1960s brought not only new economic opportunities\, but also triggered a series of crimes linked to the killing and abuse of greyhounds. While both experiences unfolded in highly differing circumstances\, the two dog-racing businesses rose to popularity amongst tourists and Chinese punters in southern China and then declined for a similar reason: the shifting of public attention to alternative\, often more-innovative\, spaces of entertainment and pleasure. Adopting the Marxist framework of commodification\, this study explores the shaping of human-animal interaction in the context of a gambling city and calls for a reappraisal of the place of non-human animals in the city beyond the framework of capitalism.

\nZoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94871261096
