SUMMARY:FAH-DHIST Guest Lecture – “道教寫本文獻與《東方道藏》”

SUMMARY:Philosophy and Religious Studies Programme Lecture: “Kang Youwei’s Confucianism and Its Relevance to the Contemporary Study of Chinese Philosophy”
DESCRIPTION:A few decades ago\, Kang Youwei was mostly studied in departments of history. Recently more and more scholars of philosophy departments have begun to publish on Kang Youwei’s Confucianism or his New-Text Classicism. A natural question is: Why did it happen? This lecture introduces the existing interpretations of the phenomenon. It then indicates that the phenomenon reshapes the debate regarding the legitimacy of Chinese philosophy and unravels the peculiar interplays between Chinese philosophizing and Chinese political discourses.

SUMMARY:FAH-DHIST Guest Lecture – “The Role of the Korean Peninsula in the Culture of the East Asian Bamboo and Wooden Texts 東亞簡牘文化圈中韓半島的位置
\nThe Korean Peninsula had played a significant role in the cultural interaction among China\, Korea\, and Japan. Starting from 108 BCE\, when Emperor Wu of Han established Lelang Commandery\, the northern Korean Peninsula was incorporated into the Han Empire. The notable amount of bamboo and wooden texts excavated in mainland China\, Korea\, and Japan in recent decades attest that a cultural sphere was formed among the three countries between the 2nd century BCE and 9th century CE in which they shared similar written and material culture. Drawing lights from these newly excavated texts\, this lecture will explore the role of the Korean Peninsula in the culture of the East Asian bamboo and wooden texts.

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “Grammar? Use?” by Prof. Luke Kang Kwong

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “On the Value of ZHU Dongrun’s Talks on Tales from Shakespeare” by Prof. Lei Weifang

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “Digital Humanities and Research Methods” by Prof. Zhang Zhiqing

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “How to Understand Chinese World Order under Heaven” by Prof. Chen Jianhong

SUMMARY:FAH/PHIL Philosophy and Religious Studies Lecture Series – “An Enactivist Interpretation of Zhuangzi” by Dr. Tang Man To
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe aim of this talk is philosophically evaluating the interpretations of Zhuangzi’s notions of 忘 wang and 坐忘 zuowang. By critically examining the limitations of the mystical interpretation and the neurophysiological interpretation\, I find that the mystical interpretation refuses to explain wang and zuowang\, and the neurophysiological interpretation fails to address the role of the situated environment in wang and zuowang. Then I propose a new interpretation\, an enactivist interpretation. This interpretation not only justifies that we could cognize wang and zuowang in terms of embodied cognition\, but it also explicates that the embodied agent who practices  wang and zuowang is a functioning subjectivity situated within his environment. \n  \nBio: \nPrior to joining the University of Macau as Postdoctoral Fellow of Philosophy and Religious Studies in 2019\, Tang had been an assistant lecturer at CUHK\, where he earned his PhD. He had taught in several Hong Kong and Macau Universities. Tang’s main research interests lie in Philosophy of Memory and Forgetting\, Comparative Philosophy and Contemporary Continental Philosophy. He has published more than ten articles on phenomenology\, hermeneutics\, philosophy of forgiveness\, Chinese philosophy in a number of philosophy journals and anthologies. Recently\, comparative philosophy constitutes his main research interest.

SUMMARY:FAH/PHIL Guest Lecture – “The Specific Way of Cultural Assimilation – Taking Chinese Islamic Philosophy in the Ming and Qing Dynasties as a Case Study” by Prof. Liu Yi-hong\, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences\, China
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nChinese Muslim thinkers created a new systematic theory of Islam regarded as “Chinese Islamic Philosophy” during Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. This was accomplished through transforming and combining core concepts of Islamic thought with the core values of traditional Chinese thought. Based on an analysis of representative works written by Chinese Muslim thinkers proficient with both Islamic doctrines and Chinese traditional thought\, I explain the key ideas of Chinese Islamic Philosophy. I conclude that Chinese Islamic Philosophy can be regarded as an exemplary product of successful cultural assimilation; as such\, it has wide relevance to diverse civilizations.

SUMMARY:FAH/PHIL Guest Lecture – “Animal Welfarism and Ritual Slaughtering” by Prof. Luís Cordeiro-Rodrigues\, Hunan University\, China
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nSome philosophers have contended that animal ritual slaughtering is morally unjustified because cultural claims for participation and identification are weaker moral claims than the moral claims for animals not suffering or to be killed unnecessarily. These philosophers contend that it is sufficient to demonstrate the moral wrongness of ritual slaughtering by endorsing a weak perspective on animals’ interests. Particularly\, the claim is that in order to demonstrate the moral wrongness of animal slaughtering it is sufficient to endorse the view that animals have a moral status\, albeit lower than the ones of humans\, which confers to them some morally relevant interests. In this article\, I argue that this weak perspective on animals’ interests is insufficient to prescribe animal slaughtering as morally wrong. I contend that these philosophers have underestimated the neo-colonial implications of their position. Thus\, by engaging with postcolonial theory\, I argue that\, if one starts from a weak view of animals’ interests\, ritual slaughtering practices can be morally justified.

SUMMARY:FAH/PHIL Guest Lecture – “Bi-Level Virtue Epistemology” by Prof. Mi Chienkuo\, Soochow University\, Taiwan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nAt the beginning\, I would bring in Ernest Sosa’s project of performance-based normativity\, in which the 3-A model of evaluating a performance is introduced. That means\, in order to be a good performance\, three important elements are required: they are accuracy\, adroitness\, and aptness. In addition\, the model can be stacked up and move from aptness to meta-aptness and full aptness. And then\, I will continue to explore action-based normativity (or agency-based normativity)\, in which we can obtain two frameworks of human actions or agency: Framework I: The loosely deontic framework (one that highlights functional and mechanical faculties). It is an intermediate region\, which admits a kind of agency involved in functional actions\, the unfree agency of proper functioning. Agents who merely function are subject to flaws or faults\, rather than sins or infractions (or violations). Framework II: The more strict deontic framework (one that presupposes free and intentional determination). In the region of freedom\, the agency involved in the actions or performances which are freely determined endeavors can be either praised or blamed. Finally\, I will touch upon an important Confucian text\, The Great Learning\, and discuss its possible dimension of virtue epistemology. The Great Learning is concerned with the idea of “reflection” (the higher-order cognitive competence or meta-cognition)\, it is also concerned with the idea of “extended knowledge”. According to The Great Learning\, it is the higher-order virtue that can allow us to start on the path to the achievement of the best kind of epistemic goods\, such as understanding and wisdom. The Great Learning instructs us that we should begin with the “comprehension of things”. This means that we should\, in a systematic way\, take in a subject matter or information. Eventually this will allow us to correct our own mind through reflection\, and so facilitate the strengthening of open-mindedness\, intellectual humility and intellectual fairness\, and cooperation with others.

SUMMARY:FAH-DHIST Guest Lecture – “The Domestic Disciplines and Approaches of Scholarly Research: the Research about Sinologist Family in Qing Dynasty 治學的家法與途徑——關於清代漢學家族研究”
DESCRIPTION:The domestic disciplines and approaches of scholarly research: the research about Sinologist family in Qing dynasty \nThe Sinology in Qing dynasty is a crucial content of civil academy\, the domestic disciplines are its main approach for the continuation. The concept of domestic discipline refers to the aims\, methods and approaches of scholarship. This concept originated from the research about Confucian classics in Han dynasty and continued to Qing dynasty. This study should combine the transformation of neo-Confucianism to Sinology and the context of Sinology in the civil academic research\, to explore the evolution of academic research in Qing dynasty with the new view of Sociocultural history.

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “A Minimalist perspective on modification structures — A case study of the de-construction in Chinese” by Prof. Cheng Gong

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “Semantic Research and Dictionary Definitions” by Prof. Tan Jingchun

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “Why Chinese doesn’t have a major class of adjectives: A revisit based on new evidence” by Prof. Zhang Min

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT: Seminar on “The musical theatre in Brazil” by Prof. Larissa Oliveira Neves Catalão\, Universidade Estadual de Campinas
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: \nThe musical theatre in Brazil \nBrazilian theatre is as ambiguous as its own audience history and culture. However during many years\, popular theatre was considered inferior when compared to European art forms. Despite that\, in the end of the 19th century\, popular theatre left the streets and moved to theatre houses. This fact changed the way the plays were produced\, leading to new forms of writing\, acting and stageset building\, which led to the emergence of modern Brazilian theatre in the 1940’s. Based on the most influential Brazilian play texts\, this lecture intends to present and analyze the history of Brazil’s musical theatre. \n  \nSHORT BIO \nProfessor Larissa Catalão is a Professor of drama\, history and theory of theater at the Department of Performing Arts\, Unicamp Arts Institute (SP)\, since March 2009. She has a postdoctoral degree from Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris 3) (2016) and Campinas State University – Unicamp (2008-09); She holds a PhD in Literary Theory and History from the State University of Campinas – Unicamp (2006)\, in the area of Brazilian Literature and a masters degree in Theory and Literary History from the State University of Campinas – Unicamp (2002)\, in the area of Literature and other cultural productions (Theater). SUMMARY:FAH-DHIST Guest Lecture – “Pingpiao 憑票”and “Qiantie 錢帖”: Commercial Papers and Folk Paper Money in Qing China as seen from the Hakka and the Jinshang (晉商) Documents
DESCRIPTION:“Pingpiao 憑票”and “Qiantie 錢帖”: Commercial Papers and Folk Paper Money in Qing China as seen from the Hakka and the Jinshang (晉商) Documents \n  \nCertain Pingpiao (憑票) circulated within some local rural markets in southeastern China during the Qing Dynasty.  Pingpiao\, a kind of exchange medium that functioned as promissory note(本 票) and check (支票) became a substitute of money.  Meanwhile\, amongst local markets in Shanxi\,  Qiantie  (錢帖)\, another kind of monetary note\, emerged and developed its circulation up to regional markets. Pingpiao and Qiantie hence worked to form commercial-capitalism in China.

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Academic Seminar: “Quoting of the Shuowen Jiezi in the Explanation of the Shijing by Duan Yuzai’s Shijing Xiaoxue—–A Critical Study” by Prof. Lee Hung Kai
