SUMMARY:Dog Racing in Macau: Commodification\, Gambling Culture\, and the Place of Non-human Animals in the City
DESCRIPTION:Dog Racing in Macau: Commodification\, Gambling Culture\, and the Place of Non-human Animals in the City \nFor a few years in the 1930s and then for another fifty-five years since 1963\, greyhound racing was one of the attractions that helped boost Macau’s repertoire as the Monte Carlo of the East\, the Las Vegas of Asia\, Asia’s sin city\, and the gambling capital of the Far East. Albeit short-lived\, the city’s pioneering canidrome positioned the Portuguese colony at the centre of a global trend. The reopening and expansion of the dog-racing business in the 1960s brought not only new economic opportunities\, but also triggered a series of crimes linked to the killing and abuse of greyhounds. While both experiences unfolded in highly differing circumstances\, the two dog-racing businesses rose to popularity amongst tourists and Chinese punters in southern China and then declined for a similar reason: the shifting of public attention to alternative\, often more-innovative\, spaces of entertainment and pleasure. Adopting the Marxist framework of commodification\, this study explores the shaping of human-animal interaction in the context of a gambling city and calls for a reappraisal of the place of non-human animals in the city beyond the framework of capitalism.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT: 35th Portuguese Language Summer Course (Online)
DESCRIPTION:35th PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE SUMMER COURSE (ONLINE) \nFROM JULY 05 TO 23\, 2021 \n  \nPARTICIPANTS \nThe program on offer may be of interest for students of Portuguese in upper secondary education or for students who are attending a University undergraduate or graduate program. \nIf you are a teacher or a translator\, you may also be interested in our theme-based courses. Please see the list below. \nIf you want to learn Portuguese just for the fun of it\, you are also most welcome to join us! \n  \nGENERAL LANGUAGE COURSES \nYou will be assigned to one of the following courses once you have taken the placement test. \nLanguage courses are organized in five different levels (A1\, A2\, B1\, B2\, C). Each one lasts 45 hours. Students also benefit from 15 hours of guided autonomous study. In addition to developing written and oral receptive and productive skills language classes\, include sessions dedicated to grammatical and lexical topics and other specific level-based features. \nThese classes run from 3 to 6 p.m. \nLanguage courses include listening\, speaking\, reading\, writing and mediation activities as well as the study of key grammatical features and vocabulary for each level. Syllabi will be available on MOODLE. \nAll courses aim at helping participants to develop their linguistic\, sociolinguistic\, pragmatic and sociocultural competences in Portuguese as well as to raise their intercultural awareness. \nParticipants who will be attending a beginner or an elementary course may find it useful to attend Music\, Dance and Gastronomy courses to enhance their grammar and vocabulary as well as their sociocultural knowledge. \nStudents receive a UM complementary digital textbook and other supplementary resources. The organization of the Summer Course will also make available other digital resources. \n  \nTHEME-BASED COURSES \nTheme-based courses consist of a 75-hour offer in literature\, linguistics\, cinema\, gastronomy\, dance\, music\, history\, education\, translation\, topics of contemporary Portugal\, contemporary art\, Portugal and Europe. Task-based activities complement these workshops. \nThese courses run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in 50-minute sessions. \nAs schedules do not overlap\, students can customize their summer study plan.  \nAt lunchtime\, participants can also get to know Macau and the Portuguese and Macanese communities in Macau and in Portugal\, as well as institutions and places in Portugal. \nIn addition\, they may also watch ‘Talking with…’\, which includes interviews with writers\, translators and people in the business and financial industries. \nThese courses require a B1\, B2 or C language proficiency. Students attending an A2 language course may have trouble but they are also welcome and will have to be prepared to work harder. Please check below the language level requirement for each course. \nParticipants taking elementary classes may find Music\, Gastronomy and Dance more adequate to supplement their study of the language and the culture. \n  \nCLASS SCHEDULES ARE AVAILABLE HERE \n  \nTEACHERS \nTeachers are well known plurilingual and multicultural professionals in their academic areas. The specific expertise of Portuguese-Chinese bilingual teachers is an added advantage for students. \n  \nCERTIFICATES and CREDITS \nAt the end of the course\, participants who attend 80% of the language course receive a certificate of attendance. \nAn achievement certificate is also available upon taking the language test and essay submission in attended theme-based courses. This certificate will provide the student’s linguistic profile. \nUniversity students may apply for equivalence to courses at their universities.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/98738684301 \nAbstract \nConspiracy theories are often considered not just as an example of irrationality\, but as a pathological phenomenon. This approach\, which gets prima facie support from the observation of a correlation between conspiracist thinking and schizotipy (Douglas et al. 2019)\, has been quite common in the last decades of research. Recently\, parallels have been drawn in the public discourse between conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and paranoid delusions. Here we argue that the pathologization of conspiracy theories is problematic for several reasons. First\, looking at surface features\, the behaviour of people who accept conspiracy theories differs in some key respects from that of people with delusions of persecution. Second\, according to the most influential aetiological theories\, the causal factors contributing to the acceptance of conspiracy theories and persecutory delusions are not the same. Third and lastly\, from the viewpoint of political epistemology and in the light of imbalances in epistemic power\, the advocates of conspiracy theories have motivations and interests that pathologization inappropriately excludes from public debate and deliberation.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95851898439 \nAbstract \nValue systems have their origins in religious traditions. Christian ideas and values still form the basis of Western societies\, although now mostly in a secularized fashion; hence they can be called post-Christian values. Comparing the impact of Confucianism in East Asia to that of Christianity in the West\, one can regard Confucianism as a functional equivalent of the Christian faith: Confucian values have exerted a profound and lasting influence on China over a period of even more than 2000 years. As “post-Confucianism” it still forms the ethical basis of Chinese society. \nConsidering these differences\, basic methodological aspects concerning a cross-cultural dialogue between China and the “West” will be explored. They include: the relation between partners who participate in a dialogue; asymmetry in the use of language (mostly English nowadays); different historical experiences (collective memory); different kinds of cultural framework (i.e.\, the symbolic orientation which\, apart from language\, is the basis of cultural identity)\, and others. \nIn view of these general conditions and impediments\, a dialogue between cultures could deal with the following four aspects: 1. historical reflection and sensitivity; 2. getting to know the respective other culture; 3. search for common concepts; 4. openness towards the other and willingness to be informed by the other.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95990453576 \nAbstract: \nMuch of the pre-Qin Chinese philosophy during the Spring-Autumn and Warring States period can be understood in the light of issues related to harmony as a solution to a chaotic world. Harmony takes place mainly in two forms\, active and passive harmony. Active harmony is a state or process in which involved parties dynamically engage one another in a constructive way while maintaining a good level of equity. Passive harmony is merely the absence of discord or conflict\, without active engagement. Disharmony is characterized by confrontation\, conflict\, and chaos. Domination exists with order\, even though with an oppressive one. Domination may be disguised as\, but must be distinguished from\, harmony. While clarifying these concepts\, I will also discuss their relation to freedom.

DESCRIPTION:流動的人與凝固的秩序——大灣區的傳統社會結構與空間格局的形成 \n今天的大灣區，在古代是一個廣闊的海灣，海灣裏島嶼星羅棋布。在這個海灣裏生活著數以萬計的船居或島居的人群。宋代以後，海灣裏的島嶼周邊生長出由泥沙沉積形成的土地，隨著沖積土地的增長，以船爲生的島民也逐漸轉爲從事農耕的人口，在這些人口定居同時，明代以後，王朝秩序在灣區早期形成的社區聚落逐步確立，這些人口借助在王朝政治秩序下獲得的社會身份，逐步壟斷了灣區內新生長土地的開發和經營，形成了以民田-沙田分區的空間格局，民田區的大族與沙田區的疍民成爲身份上不可逾越的人群等級區分。在這樣的格局下，形成了大灣區獨特的社會結構。 \n  \nThe Floating People and the Stationary Order: The Formation of Traditional Social and Spatial Structure in the Greater Bay Area \nDuring ancient time\, most part of the area what now we call “the Greater Bay Area” were still under the sea. There were just many islands in this bay. Many people based on boats or islands lived in this big bay. After the Song dynasty\, many lands brought by sedimentary sand (sand-lands) emerged around those islands. With the expansion of those new lands\, many people living on boats became settled farmers. After the Ming dynasty\, the political order in this area was constructed by the state. Relying on the state power\, those settled farmers monopoly on the exploitation of the new emerging sand-lands. A dichotomy of farmlands and sand-lands became fixed. The distinguishment of the social hierarchy between the great clans living on farmlands and the Tanka people living on sand-lands emerged. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to announce its upcoming event included in its Interdisciplinary Series – a Guest Lecture by  by Prof. Cândido Oliveira Martins\, Catholic University\, Braga on “Women’s Voices in Maria Teresa Horta”. \nThe Guest Lecture and Q&A session is open to all those interested and it is being held via  ZOOM. \nAbstract: \nCultivating various literary genres (from poetry to prose fiction)\, contemporary Portuguese writer Maria Teresa Horta has also dedicated herself to short stories\, as in the book Meninas (2014).  In this work of short stories\, we come across voices and stories of very diverse women\, who are often located on the margins of society\, in spaces of neglect or the target of various forms of violence. All together\, they allow for a reflection on the place and the condition of women. \n\nShort Bio of the invited author: \nJosé Cândido de Oliveira Martins – Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Portugal (Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences\, Braga\, North of Portugal)\, in the area of Portuguese Literature (modern and contemporary)\, Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature. He is also a member of the Center for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies (CEFH)\, supported by FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology\, as well as a researcher of the Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies (CEFH)\, R&D unit recognized by FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology\, in Portugal).  Besides numerous articles in international academic journals\, he has published several books of literary essays.
