SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL International Hybrid Symposium - "The virtues of memory; What we remember and how we remember can be soul-destroying or life-enhancing" by Prof. Charles Raliaferro
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nMemory\, meaning\, and values are deeply interrelated. While memory enables us to transcend time through narratives\, there is a sense in which we transcend time (the temporally present instant) every waking moment (and in dream states). We cannot live in temporal instants (the present “now” that has no duration); rather we live in durations\, events or episodes that we are able to grasp and weave together through memory (re-cognition). Memory\, as it shapes narratives and stories of ourselves and others– plays an indispensable role in our personal identity and understanding of the meaning and values of life. I suggest that we have obligations to remember\, especially in terms of moral accountability\, and from the standpoint of gratitude toward benefactors (including ancestors and teachers)\, and from the perspective of Christian theism. Memory is a virtue (a good power) that can be abused or used to be life-enhancing. \n  \nBio\nCharles Taliaferro is an American philosopher specializing in theology and philosophy of religion. He is an emeritus professor of philosophy at St. Olaf College\, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Faithful Research\, and a member of the Royal Institute of Philosophy. He is the author\, co-author\, editor\, or co-editor of twenty books\, most recently The Image in Mind; Theism\, Naturalism and the Imagination\, co-authored with the American artist Jil Evans. He has been a visiting scholar or guest lecturer at a large number of universities\, including Brown\, Cambridge\, Notre Dame\, Oxford\, Princeton\, and the University of Chicago. Since 2013 Taliaferro is editor-in-chief of the journal Open Theology.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL International Hybrid Symposium - "Architecture and Memory" by Mr. Lui Chak Keong
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nIn addition to its basic use function\, the building is also a space where many things happen. Buildings sometimes have a relationship with people’s memories. Architectural heritage reflects some values of society or collective memory. The lecture explores the relationship between architectural heritage and memory with some examples. \n  \nBio\nLui Chak Keong is an Architect (Macao)\, Architecte du Patrimoine (France)\, Artist\, has PhD in Design (Cultural Heritage Conservation)\, member of ICOMOS\, and member of ICOMOS CHINA. He was born in Macao and graduated from the Faculty of Architecture\, Universidade Tecnica\, Lisbon (Portugal) in 1999. Between 2000 and 2003\, he worked as architect at the Culture Institute of the Macao SAR Government and he was mainly engaged in conservation & restoration projects. He also participated in the elaboration of documents for the application process of Macao’s Historical Center to be classified as World Heritage. From 2003 to 2005\, he completed a specialist study on cultural heritage (conservation and reuse of ancient buildings and historical district) at Centre des Hautes Etudes des Chaillot in Paris\, consequently he obtained the Diplome du Centre des Hautes Etudes des Chaillot – Post Master\, as well as the professional qualification of Architecte du Patrimoine in France. In 2006 he opened his own design studio in Macao and he works mainly in heritage site projects. (http://www.citaplanningdesign.com) From 2008 to 2010\, he was a member of the working group for the elaboration of Macao Urban Concept Plan at the Research Centre for Sustainable Development Strategies of the Macao SAR Government. From 2014 to 2017\, he was a member of Cultural Heritage Committee of the Macao SAR Government. From 2020\, he is a member of Urban Planning Commitee of the Macao SAR Government. Besides architecture\, Lui chak keong is interested in a lot of visual art activities. He practices namely painting\, installation\, photography\, and video\, and he participated in many collective and individual exhibitions\, including the 52nd Venice Art Biennale and the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL International Hybrid Symposium - "Museum Ecologies Reconsidered: Cultural Value in the Web of Life" by Prof. Colin Sterling\, University of Amsterdam\, Netherlands)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nIn the face of rapid environmental breakdown and increased social and political uncertainty\, cultural institutions around the world have mobilised to imagine alternative ways of living on and with the planet. This talk will argue that such shifts indicate more than simply a change in policy or practice\, and instead point towards a fundamental reorientation of culture in the web of life. By focusing on the historical formation and evolving place of museums in this web\, the talk will explore how museums have contributed to the planetary crisis through specific symbolic and material practices\, but also how emerging approaches in the field might help to unravel some of the more destructive aspects of this entanglement. What might be gained if we begin to consider all museums as always co-constituted through nature? How can new museum strategies contribute to planetary flourishing?  \n  \nBio\nColin Sterling is Assistant Professor of Memory and Museums at the University of Amsterdam. He teaches across heritage and memory\, museum studies and artistic research\, and is a member of the Amsterdam School for Heritage\, Memory and Material Culture. Colin’s research focuses on the intersections of heritage\, ecology and artistic practice in and beyond the Anthropocene. He is the author of Heritage\, Photography\, and the Affective Past (Routledge\, 2020) and co-editor of Deterritorializing the Future: Heritage in\, of and after the Anthropocene (Open Humanities Press\, 2020). He is co-editor of the journal Museums & Social Issues. From 2020-2021 he was project co-lead on Reimagining Museums for Climate Action\, a design and ideas competition that led to an exhibition at COP26 in Glasgow.

DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Seminar  “East Timor Portuguese: diachronic and synchronic aspects”\, by Prof. Davi Albuquerque being held on November 25\, 2022\, at 7:00pm\, via Zoom. \nABSRACT:               \nThe Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was the first nation to gain independence in the 21st century. Located in Southeast Asia\, part of the island of Timor was a Portuguese colony from the 16th century until 1974. After that period\, it suffered Indonesian domination that lasted until 1999. In 2002\, it became an independent nation and elected the Portuguese language as one of the official languages\, alongside Tetum-Praça\, a lingua franca spoken by most of the population. The most recent investigations on the Portuguese language spoken in Timor-Leste focus on the variation in the production of speakers\, in order to verify if it is a local/national variety\, or if there are traces of the process of acquisition/learning of Portuguese L2 /LE\, or even if they are just deviations from the European standard. The present work presents socio-historical information about Portuguese on the island of Timor and its linguistic impact on the current vernacular Portuguese spoken by East Timorese\, as well as discusses the main characteristics of Portuguese spoken in that country. DESCRIPTION:  \n \n \nThe Department of Portuguese if FAH is pleased to invite all those interested to the International Colloquium  “Belated\, beyond and out of place? Avant-garde movements in non-hegemonic contexts”\, being held on November 23 to 25\, 2022\, via Zoom. \n  \nColloquium Info \nThe first decades of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of the historical avant-gardes. Their center of creation and above all diffusion was undisputed: European avant-garde groups spread the good news of aesthetic and political transgressions\, ranging from new artistic forms\, materials and conceptions to an everyday art of performance\, mixing in an ideally undistinguishable manner art and life. \nThe worldwide presence of the European avant-garde movements would not have been possible without a series of new means of communication and transportation. On the one hand\, the news could achieve transnational audiences through radio waves\, transatlantic telegraph cables\, a network of magazines and journals\, pamphlets and manifestoes\, faster international courier services\, and last but not least the cinema and its powerful grip on the collective unconscious. On the other\, swift transatlantic lines\, expedite train travels and adventurous although much rarer airplane voyages allowed for an authentic procession of artists\, writers and intellectuals from Europe to virtually all corners of the globe. \nHow did the materiality of those new means of communication and transportation impact the aesthetic production in non-hegemonic cultures and political contexts? How did this materiality implied an unprecedented sense of simultaneity\, which in its turn turned upside-down traditional 19th-century notions such as belatedness\, backwardness\, artistic and cultural legging? \n1922 has been consecrated as the annus mirabilis of Literary and Aesthetic Modernism. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Fan Li 范蠡and the Daoist Philosophy of Time and Temporality: From Laozi to Huang-Lao” by Prof. Thomas Michael\, Beijing Normal University\, China
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94665357070 \nAbstract \nThe age-old tradition of Daoist philosophy continues to challenge our ability to properly recognize its unique positions\, insights\, and worldview. One contemporary source of this challenge derives from the excavated editions of the Daodejing\, namely the Guodian Laozi and the Mawangdui Laozi\, which have compelled us reconsider two terms that are foundationally planted at the heart of Daoist philosophy: heng 恒 and chang 常\, both of which are commonly taken to signify “constancy/ permanence/ eternity.” The work of two eminent scholars in the field\, Chen Ligui and James Wang Qingjie\, have demonstrated that these two terms separately had very different ancient meanings\, and that their uses in Laozi’s Daodejing fully embodied them. These findings demonstrate that the early Daoist philosophy of Huang-Lao significantly differs from the ancient Daoist philosophy of Laozi. This is nowhere more so in than in their separate understandings of time\, as revealed in Laozi’s phenomenology of heng understood in terms of temporality next to Huang-Lao’s metaphysics of chang understood in terms of constancy/ permanence/ eternity. \nThis lecture explores Laozi’s original philosophy of temporality before turning to the “Yueyu xia” 越语下 of the Guoyu 國語\, which presents a series of conversations between King Goujian of Yue and a mysterious figure named Fan Li (536-448 BC)\, who is recognized by some scholars as the pivotal mediating figure between Laozi’s original phenomenology and Huang-Lao’s later metaphysics. \n  \nBio \nThomas Michael is Associate Professor in the School of Philosophy at Beijing Normal University since 2016. He received his Ph.D. in History of Religions from University of Chicago in 2001. Michael’s two primary fields of research are Daoist philosophy and Shamanism. In addition to many articles on Daoism\, he has also published three books on the topic. His latest book is Philosophical Enactment and Bodily Cultivation in Early Daoism: In the Matrix of the Daodejing (Bloomsbury\, 2022)\, in which he examines the primary contours of Laozi’s original Daoist philosophy in distinction to the later Daoist philosophy of Huang-Lao. Michael has also published several studies on the medieval Daoist\, Ge Hong\, including “Mountains and Early Daoism in the Writings of Ge Hong” (History of Religions 56/1:23-54\, 2016)\, in which he highlights Ge Hong’s continuity with the philosophy and practice of Laozi’s original Daoism. Michael also has published extensively on Shamanism\, and his major articles include “Shamanism Theory and the Early Chinese Wu” (Journal of the American Academy of Religion 83/3: 649-696\, 2015) and “Shamanism\, Eroticism\, and Death: The Ritual Structures of the Nine Songs in Comparative Context” (Religions 10 (1): 1-26)\, in which he explores early Chinese shamanism through the lens of comparative studies.

Through a combination of lecture\, small group/partner activities\, individual work\, and whole-group discussion\, students will be introduced to multimodal composition strategies and have time to practice those strategies. \nSpeaker: Kathleen Vacek holds a PhD in English Composition & Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has taught first-year composition\, qualitative research methods\, and courses for teachers of English language learners. She also led a university writing center for four years\, where she coached students and faculty writers\, mentored a staff of writing consultants\, and provided university-wide writing development programs. DESCRIPTION:  \n \n \nThe Department of Portuguese if FAH is pleased to invite all those interested to the International Colloquium  “Belated\, beyond and out of place? Avant-garde movements in non-hegemonic contexts”\, being held on November 23 to 25\, 2022\, via Zoom. \n  \nColloquium Info \nThe first decades of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of the historical avant-gardes. Their center of creation and above all diffusion was undisputed: European avant-garde groups spread the good news of aesthetic and political transgressions\, ranging from new artistic forms\, materials and conceptions to an everyday art of performance\, mixing in an ideally undistinguishable manner art and life. \nThe worldwide presence of the European avant-garde movements would not have been possible without a series of new means of communication and transportation. On the one hand\, the news could achieve transnational audiences through radio waves\, transatlantic telegraph cables\, a network of magazines and journals\, pamphlets and manifestoes\, faster international courier services\, and last but not least the cinema and its powerful grip on the collective unconscious. On the other\, swift transatlantic lines\, expedite train travels and adventurous although much rarer airplane voyages allowed for an authentic procession of artists\, writers and intellectuals from Europe to virtually all corners of the globe. \nHow did the materiality of those new means of communication and transportation impact the aesthetic production in non-hegemonic cultures and political contexts? How did this materiality implied an unprecedented sense of simultaneity\, which in its turn turned upside-down traditional 19th-century notions such as belatedness\, backwardness\, artistic and cultural legging? \n1922 has been consecrated as the annus mirabilis of Literary and Aesthetic Modernism.
