SUMMARY:3rd FAH Macao Humanities Roundtable of the University of Macau
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd FAH Macao Humanities Roundtable will be held on 7 May 2025. As one of the major research-oriented events of the FAH\, the Roundtable aims to foster collegiality in the faculty and serves as an excellent platform for FAH colleagues and Ph.D. students to share and showcase their research with UM members. Please note that there will be parallel sessions in E21A-G035 (the auditorium)\, E21A-G039 and E21A-G049 (the SI Lab). The 37 presentations have been grouped into 12 sessions\, as shown in the attached programme. The Roundtable will start at 9:30 in E21A-G035. SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: 'The Coping Tactics of Interpreting (口譯的藝術與應對策略)'
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nProfessor Zhong views interpreting as both a technique and an art. Drawing on extensive experience as both a practitioner and educator\, he will explore the interplay between technical skill and artistry in the field. The discussion will focus on how interpreters\, in practice\, leverage their skills\, techniques\, and linguistic abilities to navigate dilemmas\, resolve difficulties\, achieve communicative goals\, and successfully complete their assignments. \n  \nSpeaker Biography:  \nProfessor Zhong is a leading figure in interpreting and translation studies\, language service studies\, and foreign language education. He is celebrated as a pioneer and advocate for professional education in translation and interpreting\, having played a key role in establishing degree programmes such as the Bachelor of Translation and Interpreting (BTI)\, Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI)\, and Doctor of Translation and Interpreting (DTI). \nFrom May 2017 to October 2023\, Professor Zhong served as Co-President of Kingold Group and President of Kingold Academy. Before his tenure with Kingold Group\, Professor Zhong made significant contributions as President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). \nAs an author of over 100 books and research papers\, Professor Zhong remains a prolific academic and Ph.D. supervisor. His ongoing research and teaching focus on interpreting and translation studies\, foreign language education\, and language service studies. He is an active Distinguished Chair Professor at Macau Metropolitan University and continues to supervise Ph.D. students and publish papers. \nProfessor Zhong has served on numerous national and provincial advisory boards\, significantly contributing to the advancement of foreign language education and professional translation and interpreting education in higher education. His extensive work has earned him numerous accolades and recognitions\, including prestigious awards and international honorary titles. \nHis international impact is further highlighted by honorary recognitions such as Honorary Fellow of the University of Warwick\, and Doctor of Letters from the University of Central Lancashire\, the University of Westminster\, and the University of Coventry\, acknowledging his vast contributions to the field.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: 'Translators in the AI Era: Upholding Core Values and  Pursuing Continuous Improvement (在人工智能的浪潮中堅守初心，不斷提高自己)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the translation industry\, making human-machine collaboration the new standard. In this new landscape\, both translation education models and the working methods of translators must evolve to meet emerging demands. This lecture will explore two key areas: firstly\, the reform and expansion of translator training programs\, and secondly\, the critical importance of the translator’s “attitude positioning” \n(“態度定位”). Establishing a clear stance is crucial for every translator engaged in international communication and represents the core value of human translation itself. Through case studies and examples\, the lecture will offer insights for practitioners and students\, helping them navigate the opportunities of the AI era while upholding professional integrity and becoming competent language service providers. \n  \nSpeaker Biography:  \nProf. Zhang Meifang is Emeritus Professor of the FAH\, University of Macau. During her working years at the University of Macau\, Prof. Zhang was the major creator and coordinator of the MA programme of Translation Studies. She also served as head of the Department of English\, and Master of Cheong Kun Lun College. Her research interests include discourse and functional approaches to Translation Studies\, media and political discourse and translation\, translation and intercultural studies. Prof. Zhang is a founding member and leader of the Macau Federation for Translators and Interpreters. She is an expert member and council member of the Chinese Translators・Association\, council member of China Association for Comparative Study of Chinese and English\, and executive member of the APTIF Joint Committee. She was Co-editor in Chief of Babel: International Journal of Translation (2017-2020)\, and is serving on the editorial boards of Target: International Journal of Translation Studies\, Chinese Translators Journal\, and several other refereed international and national journals of translation studies.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: "Utopian Studies\, Food Studies\, Spatiality Studies and the Digital Humanities: Intersections and New Research Questions"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nSocieties evolve based on the questions they pose\, and the same holds for utopian imagination. Over the past two decades\, Utopian Studies has expanded through insights from emerging fields. When intersecting with Food Studies\, the focus shifts to how societies can progress through the lens of food—examining sustainable and equitable production\, distribution\, and preparation. In dialogue with Spatiality Studies\, particularly in the context of dystopias\, emphasis is placed on material\, social\, and mental spaces and the body as a space—each serving as a site of resistance and signalling the possibility of a “light at the end of the tunnel.” Meanwhile\, as a research methodology\, Digital Humanities unveils patterns that offer fresh perspectives. These interdisciplinary intersections generate new research questions\, charting novel paths for Utopian Studies. These are the new avenues I intend to explore in my talk. \nBiography: \nProf. Fátima Vieira is a Full Professor of English at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto\, where she has been teaching since 1986. She currently serves as Vice-Rector for Culture at the University. In 1998\, she earned her doctoral degree with a thesis on William Morris and the British Utopian literary tradition. From 2006 to 2016\, she chaired the Utopian Studies Society/Europe. She also coordinates the Porto branch of CETAPS (Centre for English\, Translation\, and Anglo-Portuguese Studies) and leads the research project “Mapping Dreams: British and North-American Utopianism”.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – "Daoist Wisdom: An Account of Epistemic Humility" by Dr. Christine Tan\, Yale-NUS College\, Singapore
DESCRIPTION:Microsoft Teams: https://go.um.edu.mo/4sjk6f1d \n  \nAbstract \nThis work draws from Daoist thought to argue that epistemic humility is not only a necessary pre-condition to wisdom but is also sufficiently constitutive of wisdom. Additionally\, I argue that going beyond that sufficiency undermines the genuineness of said wisdom. More specifically\, both Zhuangzi and Laozi argue that going beyond epistemic humility assumes a context-transcending truth\, epistemic justification\, or metanormative value which exists\, and can be known. In contrast\, genuine wisdom understands that no knowledge\, truth\, or epistemic claim transcends any given context. \nI advance three central arguments: First\, epistemic humility is incompatible with holding any “belief\,” “knowledge\,” or “understanding” that is taken to be epistemically justifiable or rational. Second\, epistemic humility is sufficient\, and more radically\, necessarily sufficient\, meaning that anything added to it undermines it. Third\, epistemic humility necessitates\, rather than prevents\, engagement and action. \n\nBio \nDr Christine Tan is a Filipino-born philosopher whose main areas of expertise are Chinese and Comparative Philosophy in general\, and Neo-Daoist philosophy in particular. Before joining Yale-NUS College\, she did her PhD at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore\, where she wrote her dissertation titled ‘Freedom as Self-realisation: Zide in the Neo-Daoist Philosophy of Guo Xiang’. Before that\, she did her MA and BA at the University of Santo Tomas\, Philippines\, where her areas of focus were psychoanalysis and post-structuralist philosophy. \nDr Tan has published extensively in Chinese philosophy (with a specific focus on Guo Xiang). Her work has spanned a variety of epistemological themes from classical and medieval Chinese textual analysis to problem-driven treatments of traditionally Euro-centric issues such as freedom and autonomy. This includes published journal articles on Chinese Buddhism\, Confucianism\, and Daoism. Ultimately\, her goal is to push the boundaries for how we understand selfhood\, agency\, and community from inter-cultural and truly global lenses.
