SUMMARY:The ELC welcomes 300 incoming UM students for the Summer English Programme 2020
DESCRIPTION:Today marks the beginning of the ELC’s 3-week Summer English Programme\, which will welcome 300 students from Macau and surrounding areas who plan to enter UM in September. The Summer English Programme 2020 aims to bridge students’ current academic language\, conceptual and study abilities and better acquaint them with the study expectations within an international university context. Over 20 experienced ELC teaching faculty will support the programme\, and more than 30 graduate-student programme assistants will provide important mentorship to assist the student transition from high school to university. \n  \nThis year also marks an evolution from previous years as the ELC adjusts the programme to better suit student needs and the ongoing COVID teaching situation. The programme will focus more specifically on the English and skills necessary for academic and faculty-specific language environments that students will encounter upon university entry. Other programme adjustments include updated teaching materials\, approaches and assessments to match the online teaching context. The programme aims to comprehensively support students through a raft of in-house produced materials for instruction and support via Moodle\, Zoom\, DingTalk and other accessible technology platforms. Finally\, the programme will address student motivation\, learning and assessment through integration of numerous student-produced digital projects and an E-portfolio to exhibit a body of students’ work from the 3 weeks. \nThe ELC wishes students the best for the Summer English Programme 2020 and their ongoing studies at UM\, as we strive to support student success at the university.

SUMMARY:FAH-DCLL Guest Lecture: “Chinese Dialects and Chinese Cultures along the Silk Road” by Prof. Xing Xiangdong

SUMMARY:History Forum No. 1 – Discovered and Forgotten: The Maldives in Imperial China
DESCRIPTION:Small and remote\, the Maldives did not enter the Chinese world until Wang Dayuan’s visit in 1330-31. Decades later\, the Zheng He Voyages (1405-1433) followed to visit this island kingdom\, and brought its tributary envoys to Beijing. Take the Maldives as a case\, angle and approach\, this talk on one hand examines the Chinese knowledge of the island kingdom by highlighting Chinese toponymy\, local products including coconuts\, coir ropes\, dried fish\, cowrie shells\, and ambergris\, ship without nails\, and women\, thus providing a valuable glimpse of medieval Maldives; on the other hand\, the talk introduces the Sino-Maldivian interactions\, both politically and economically. In conclusion\, the Maldives symbolizes the heyday of the Chinese activities in the Indian Ocean and the Chinese understanding of this region\, and this small kingdom indeed shaped imperial China to a surprising degree as illustrated by cowrie shells\, the Maldivian tributes\, and ambergris (including its absence) in the Chinese court. Nonetheless\, the Chinese had showed little interest by the end of the sixteenth century. “Discovered” in the 1330s\, the island kingdom would had been forgotten in post-1600 China.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Online Workshop – “The Crisis of Critical Theory? Critical Theory From and Beyond the Margins”
DESCRIPTION:Critical theory is a Western\, and distinctly European\, intellectual tradition that drew its normative resources from the social and political events that transpired in Europe over the course of the 20th century. It is relevant to ask the question whether\, as a critical-practical tradition\, critical theory has anything to contribute outside the Western-European context\, given the emergence of globalization and the issues that arose with it. For some\, the Eurocentrism of critical theory is symptomatic of its very own crisis\, one which challenges the universality of its normative claims\, e.g.\, the abolition of social injustice. Is it possible for critical theory to overcome its Eurocentrism and\, therefore\, its own crisis? The irony is that critical theory is only able to defend the universality of its normative claims when it is able to renew itself. If it is at all possible to renew critical theory\, what does this renewal entail? The workshop will pursue these questions by expanding the scope of traditional critical theory\, especially\, but not exclusively\, by drawing on critical perspectives on modern societies and emancipation movements that have originated in Asia. \nWhile critical theory has asserted its role as the vanguard of protecting the interest of the oppressed\, the pursuit of justice\, and the abolition of domination and alienation in society\, the question of who is the oppressed\, what is justice\, and who and what is dominated or alienated remains prevalent. The need to revise\, re-align\, and remap the trajectories of critical theory becomes an essential call to arms as we continue to experience injustice\, domination\, and oppression in new forms that displaces our traditional ideas of justice\, domination\, and oppression. From this vantage point\, there is a need to move critical theory beyond the margins of its intended scope and look at the possibility where future discourses in critical theory can become juxtaposed in pursuit of its intended normative goals. There is a need to renew\, revisit\, and revise existing conceptions of social justice when its possibility entails contrary effects. \n  \nMorning session\, 10:00am\n“Critical Theory at the Margins”\nPaolo A.
