SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT: CIELA Interdisciplinary Guest Talk Series – Mônica Simas
DESCRIPTION:CIELA Interdisciplinary Guest Talk Series \nRostos de Macau / Facets of Macau \nAbstract \nThis speech seeks to show that\, in the unfinished story of A Quinta Essência [The Fifth Essence]\, written by Agustina Bessa-Luis\, contradictory and mysterious memories of Macau are put into circulation along the path of a protagonist\, who in conflict with himself\, reflects on the impossibility of knowing the world. The self-reflective narrative\, full of anachronisms and fusion of diegetic levels\, presents China as a desired “other”\, permeated with crossed imagery. The main purpose of this communication is to verify how the intersections of these imaginary points to the possible meanings of Luso-Chinese contacts at the same time that erase the organization of Portugal’s old colonial records. The relations between fiction and history\, typical of historiographical metafiction could multiply the meanings of understanding about Macau. \nKeywords: Contemporary Portuguese Fiction; Macau in the Portuguese Language Literature; Postmodern Portuguese Literature; Colonial Archives and Fiction; Macau’s literature. \n  \nShort Bio Mônica Simas \nProfessor Simas is a Portuguese Literature Professor in the University of Sao Paulo (USP-SP)\, Brazil. She had her Master and Doctorate’s degree in Portuguese Literature from PUC-Rio. There\, she has taught in graduation and post graduation programs until 2003. In the University of Sao Paulo\, she actually coordinates the LIA (Laboratory of Intersections with Asia) with the Professor Ho Yeh Chia from the Department of Orient Studies. She has published extensively on Macau Portuguese Literature and related topics. Beyond that she also has some publications about contemporary Portuguese poetry.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT: Seminar on "BILINGUALISM\, LANGUAGES OF HERITAGE AND EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE: TO MAKE KNOWN THE PROBLEM RELATED TO HERITAGE"
DESCRIPTION:BILINGUISMO\, LÍNGUAS DE HERANÇA E PRÁTICA LETIVA: DAR A CONHECER A PROBLEMÁTICA RELACIONADA COM A HERANÇA. \nBILINGUALISM\, LANGUAGES OF HERITAGE AND EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE: TO MAKE KNOWN THE PROBLEM RELATED TO HERITAGE \nABSTRACT \nAccording to Flory & Souza (2009)\, studies show that there is no universally accepted definition for bilingualism and for this reason; it makes sense to investigate this phenomenon in relation to its social\, cultural\, linguistic and cognitive consequences. Garcia (2009) understands bilingualism as a complex linguistic\, psychological and sociocultural behavior\, and that has multidimensional aspects because it involves different areas of human life (social\, cultural\, family\, identity\, linguistic\, emotional). Thus\, our goal is to discuss bilingualism as a complex phenomenon in which various elements interact and\, as such\, can be observed and analyzed from different perspectives. It is also our intention to establish your relationship with the languages of heritage \nKey works: Bilingualism. Heritage language: Identity \nSHORT BIO \nProfessor Maria Luisa Ortiz Alvarez graduated in Russian language and literature and pursued her Master degree of Pedagogical Sciences from the Moscow Higher Pedagogical Institute. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the State University of Campinas\, a postdoctoral degree from the Federal University of Bahia and a postdoctoral degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela\, Spain. She also graduated as a teacher of Portuguese at the University of Havana\, Cuba in 1992\, where she worked as a teacher trainer of Russian language for 22 years (1978 -2000) and 10 years (1990 – 2000) as a teacher trainer of Portuguese as a foreign language. \nShe is currently an Associate Professor (level IV) of the Institute of Letters of the University of Brasilia\, an institution in which she has already held the positions of Deputy Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation and Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Applied Linguistics. In 2006 she was elected director of the Institute of Letters from 2006 to 2010 and re-elected in 2010 from 2010 to 2014. \nShe was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (Siple) between 2001 and 2004. She is currently a member of the SIPLE Advisory Board (2010-2013 and 2014-2017). In 2005\, she was elected president of the Association of Applied Linguistics of Brazil (Alab) and re-elected in 2007. She was a member of the ALAB Advisory Board from 2009 to 2011. \nShe has an extensive record of publications and research work. She is also involved in teacher training of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in several countries worldwide (Mexico\, Argentina\, Paraguay\, United States\, Uruguay\, Switzerland\, Cuba\, Colombia\, and Spain\, among others). \nShe is an external collaborator of the FRASEONET Research Group of the University of Santiago de Compostela\, at the invitation of the project coordinator Prof. Dr. Maria Isabel Gonzalez Del Rey. She is currently doing her third Postdoctoral in the area of Portuguese as an Heritage Language under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Katia Chulata from the University of Pescara\, Italy and Prof. Dr. Maria José Grosso from the University of Macau \nShe has 4 book chapters in the press\, three of them to be published in 2020 and one in 2021.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: "Professional Standards and Norms of Translation: Reflections from the Perspective of the Sociology of Law" by Prof. Zhao Junfeng
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAs the only national professional association\, Translators’ Association of China (TAC)\, along with other relevant departments and institutions\, developed and issued a host of professional standards and norms of translation which\, to some extent\, has contributed to and will continue to push for an orderly development of language services industry in China. Nevertheless\, related laws with binding force are yet to be developed to ensure the transition of the industry from “a chaotic market” to “a professional autonomy.” Interactive relations between industry norms and prospective laws are explored from the perspective of the sociology of law\, and suggestions on the legislation of translation industry are accordingly presented in this talk. \nBiography: \nJunfeng Zhao is Ph.D. in forensic linguistics\, professor and director of Centre for Translation Studies\, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). Professor Zhao is now the Secretary General of China National Committee for Translation and Interpreting Education\, vice president of WITTA\, vice director of Legal Translation Committee of TAC\, vice chairman of Translators Association of Guangdong Province\, China. From 2014 to 2018 he was the dean of the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies (SITS)\, GDUFS. He has published extensively in translation and interpreting studies\, especially in legal translation and court interpreting domains.

SUMMARY:DHIST guest lecture:

SUMMARY:DHIST guest lecture:

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Guest Lecture – “Observing Trump: A Systems-Theoretical Postscriptum” by Prof. Markus Heidingsfelder\, Xiamen University Malaysia
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/93087193232\n  \nAbstract \nIn his talk\, Dr. Heidingsfelder will add a postscriptum to his recently published book on Donald Trump (Trump – beobachtet/Observing Trump). By defocalizing the president’s actions and shifting the attention toward social structures\, he aims to overcome the ‘thin’ explanations that still dominate the academic debate and reveal the dependency of individuals and events upon social systems – including “Individual 1”. His main thesis is that ‘systems conflicts’ are responsible for the noise around the 45th president of the United States; conflicts between the system of politics and other sub-systems of society\, mainly the law\, the economy\, the mass media\, and science. \n  \nBio \nMarkus Heidingsfelder is the author of System Pop (2012) and Trump – beobachtet (2020). He was born in Cologne\, Germany\, in 1963\,  received his Ph.D. from Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in 2009\, held appointments at DJS (German Journalist School) Munich\, Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich\, Hafen City University Hamburg\, Free University Berlin\, Habib University (Pakistan)\, and is now an Assistant Professor in the Journalism Department of Xiamen University Malaysia. His research connects theoretical and media-analytic interests to explore the dynamic relationship between media and society. Besides his academic credentials\, Dr. Heidingsfelder has over thirty years of overlapping experiences as a communications professional.
