SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Guest Lecture – “Observing Trump: A Systems-Theoretical Postscriptum” by Prof. Markus Heidingsfelder\, Xiamen University Malaysia
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/93087193232\n  \nAbstract \nIn his talk\, Dr. Heidingsfelder will add a postscriptum to his recently published book on Donald Trump (Trump – beobachtet/Observing Trump). By defocalizing the president’s actions and shifting the attention toward social structures\, he aims to overcome the ‘thin’ explanations that still dominate the academic debate and reveal the dependency of individuals and events upon social systems – including “Individual 1”. His main thesis is that ‘systems conflicts’ are responsible for the noise around the 45th president of the United States; conflicts between the system of politics and other sub-systems of society\, mainly the law\, the economy\, the mass media\, and science. \n  \nBio \nMarkus Heidingsfelder is the author of System Pop (2012) and Trump – beobachtet (2020). He was born in Cologne\, Germany\, in 1963\,  received his Ph.D. from Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in 2009\, held appointments at DJS (German Journalist School) Munich\, Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich\, Hafen City University Hamburg\, Free University Berlin\, Habib University (Pakistan)\, and is now an Assistant Professor in the Journalism Department of Xiamen University Malaysia. His research connects theoretical and media-analytic interests to explore the dynamic relationship between media and society. Besides his academic credentials\, Dr. Heidingsfelder has over thirty years of overlapping experiences as a communications professional.

The state can by no means do everything. Only a society with a fully developed public sphere can be a sound society\, which can have a stably social and economic development and can be organized in an orderly manner to deal with crises like Covid 19 we have been facing since early last year. This lecture examines the relationship between the state and society through modern Chinese history and discusses the importance of the development of public sphere. Prof. Wang will also provide his views on urban management in today’s China. \n  \nPlease register for the forum on or before 17 February 2021 (Wednesday) via the QR code or https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1FaX8I7Dfmzwblk

SUMMARY:Personal Materials and Archives: Filmmakers of Shanghai in 1950s
DESCRIPTION:Zhang Jishun\, former secretary of the party of East China Normal University\, is a prominent expert in modern history of Shanghai. She is currently a research fellow of Si-mian Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities\, ECNU. This lecture is a case study of micro-history and soul-history. In this lecture Prof. Zhang will demonstrate how an actress in Shanghai response to the cultural reform led by the new government in the 1950s. This is a good case to comprehend the interactions between political powers and individuals in the 1950s.

\n<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUkogeSqEIc&list=PLMSeE_NnGt0z2z8GEBNGCNT35_9Ejl16R&index=8> (2021-03-02) \nYouTube (2020b): “O DIA EM QUE FIACAMOS DE QUARENTENA.” \n<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wPiq6Ggpqs&list=PLMSeE_NnGt0z2z8GEBNGCNT35_9Ejl16R&index=8> (2021-03-02) \nYouTube (2020c): “ARREPENDIMENTOS.” \n<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHlSkt_OdM8&list=PLMSeE_NnGt0z2z8GEBNGCNT35_9Ejl16R&index=9> (2021-03-02) \nYouTube (2020d): “5 METAS PRA 2020.” Qual é a relação entre PO.VA e (in)traduzibilidade? \nPalavras-chave: José Saramago\, recepção\, crítica literária chinesa\, literatura portuguesa \nReferências: \nBrizotto\, B.\, & Zinani\, C. SUMMARY:The Enemy-radio Listeners: Technology and Agency in Socialist China
DESCRIPTION:Socialist China was usually understood as a totalized society with strict control over the flow of information. In this talk\, Dr. Wang Yu complicates the above understanding by exploring the popular practice of listening to foreign radio stations in the 1950s and 1960s China. He will bring into light this largely unknown group of radio users and answer the following questions: who were they\, when\, how\, and why did they listen\, and more importantly\, how did they interact with the state as they process the information from the political power beyond state-borders? Wang suggests that the state’s failure to control the flow of information not only had to do with its technological limits but also was closely related to a few other geopolitical and social issues. This talk also invites the audience to rethink the limit of the state in the age of technological innovation and globalization. \n

The forum will provide a platform for world-renowned scholars of different research fields to share their research with us. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \nIn this forum\, we are honored to have Professor Gongkai PAN to deliver a lecture on the topic “The pursuit of cross-border humanistic ideals – my art and life” \n  \nDetails of the forum are as follows: \nDate:               15 April 2021 (Thursday) \nTime:               5:00 pm – 6:30 pm \nVenue:             E34-G011 (Lecture Hall\, Cultural Building) \nLanguage:       Mandarin (Simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided) \n  \nTitle: The pursuit of cross-border humanistic ideals – my art and life \nAbstract: A piece of ink painting\, an idea of philosophical thinking\, a conceptual artwork\, an architectural design\, the management and development of a university – all of them are grasps of different forms of “bounded domains”. Although they are different in nature and size\, these differences seem to be irrelevant. In fact\, they have inherent commonality. Behind these different works of art in my life\, there is a continuing yearning and pursuit for the future humanistic ideals and humanistic spirit. \n  \nPlease register for the forum on or before 14 April 2021 via  https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5vRdpSi4rxE44gm \nKindly refer to the below poster for more information.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: ‘Poems for Macau’ - Talking to Cecília Jorge
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to announce its upcoming event – a talk given by Dr. Cecília Jorge on her most recent publication\, a book of poems entitled ‘Poemas para Macau’ (Poems for Macau). During this session held at the Faculty of Arts (University of Macau) and simultaneously online\, the author will share with the audience the guiding lines and themes behind her poems that reflect memories of Macau of bygone and current times. \nAre such memories and thoughts merely her own views and feelings\, or do they overlap with those of the Macanese community as a whole? What place does her recent poetic work hold within the literary production of Macau and of diasporic Portuguese language poetry in general? This and other related topics will be covered and discussed in this event. \nThe talk and Q&A session is open to all those interested\, both in loco as well as via the webinar session on ZOOM. \n \nShort Bio of the invited author: \nCecília Jorge is a journalist\, author and researcher on the Macanese community and culture since the late 1970s. She was born in Macau\, where her family has roots going back 400 years\, and pursued her university studies in Portugal\, having graduated in Germanic Philology from the University of Lisbon. \nShe began her journalistic career in Lisbon and worked in that field from 1973 until 1990. After returning to Macau\, Cecília Jorge continued her carreer in journalism as correspondent for ANOP\, and later worked at DSTCS\, GCS\, Cultural Institute and at the Department for Chinese Affaires. In 1990\, together with Rogério Beltrão Coelho she co-founded the publisher Livros do Oriente\, Lda. \nShe has dedicated most of her research to the study and diffusion of the cultural identity of the Macanese\, to Macau as the birth place of this community\, and to the overseas Macanese communities. She is the author of several books as well as journal and newspaper articles\, and has participated in seminars\, conferences and discussions\, as well as in television and radio documentaries. Currently she is consultant for Santa Casa da Misericórida de Macau. \nZOOM LINK \n \nCIELA WEBSITE
