SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “The Variety of Minds: Why the Dao Mind Is/Becomes Huanghu (Ambiguous and Elusive)?” by Prof. Robin Wang\, Loyola Marymount University\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/ j/ 99210467063 \nAbstract \nThis talk explores the link between Dao in cosmology and an epistemological pattern for illumination and well-being.  It argues for a rou柔 (suppleness) cognitive style of knowing and an epistemological stance to embody the intellectual virtues. Rou does not only create a crucial space where one’s ethos and values can be displayed\, but also where one’s cognitive capacities are enhanced.

SUMMARY:Dog Racing in Macau: Commodification\, Gambling Culture\, and the Place of Non-human Animals in the City
DESCRIPTION:Dog Racing in Macau: Commodification\, Gambling Culture\, and the Place of Non-human Animals in the City \nFor a few years in the 1930s and then for another fifty-five years since 1963\, greyhound racing was one of the attractions that helped boost Macau’s repertoire as the Monte Carlo of the East\, the Las Vegas of Asia\, Asia’s sin city\, and the gambling capital of the Far East. Albeit short-lived\, the city’s pioneering canidrome positioned the Portuguese colony at the centre of a global trend. The reopening and expansion of the dog-racing business in the 1960s brought not only new economic opportunities\, but also triggered a series of crimes linked to the killing and abuse of greyhounds. While both experiences unfolded in highly differing circumstances\, the two dog-racing businesses rose to popularity amongst tourists and Chinese punters in southern China and then declined for a similar reason: the shifting of public attention to alternative\, often more-innovative\, spaces of entertainment and pleasure. Adopting the Marxist framework of commodification\, this study explores the shaping of human-animal interaction in the context of a gambling city and calls for a reappraisal of the place of non-human animals in the city beyond the framework of capitalism.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Identity and dementia: a different approach” by Prof. Giovanni Boniolo\, University of Ferrara\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95296752322 \nAbstract \nIn the talk\, after clarifying terms such as ‘identity’\, ‘self’ and ‘person- hood’\, I propose an empirical account of identity based on the notion of “whole phenotype”. This move allows one to claim the persistence of the individuals before and after their being affected by dementia.

\nZoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94871261096

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “VisonBytes - Seeing in the age of intercultural digitality” by Prof. Holger Briel\, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University-United International College
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/ j/ 94504263949 \nAbstract \nFrom Emojis to Manga\, from Western adverts to “foreign” brand consciousness\, visual products are continuing their near instantaneous circulation around the globe. Especially their apparent ‘naturalness’ and freedom from translation is appealing. But here also lies the problem: these materials have been constructed by social actors with specific agendas in mind; and especially their ‘foreign’ receptions create challenges\, including ethical ones. \nIn order to properly study these fairly new phenomena\, a different kind of terminology is needed\, not one that relies on older media concepts\, but one that does them justice in terms of their contextual and technological complexity\, multivalence and mobility. In my research presentation\, I will propose to introduce the term ‘VisionBytes’ for these phenomena. These are complex visual arrays\, oftentimes of foreign cultural origin and consist of still or moving images. They circulate within a system of non-photography as sketched by François Laruelle (2013) and are akin to the ‘objects’ described in Quentin Meillassoux’ Beyond Finitude (2008). Invariably\, they touch on issues of belonging\, identity\, exclusion\, human rights and globalisation\, issues I will foreground in my presentation. Even more recently\, they have also begun participating in the preparations for the imminent gaze of the (technological) Other\, of a possible singularity which for the first time will allow humans to re-view themselves and thus be judged by alien means.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: ETHNOGRAPHIES OF THE LUSOPHONE INDIAN OCEAN
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “ETHNOGRAPHIES OF THE LUSOPHONE INDIAN OCEAN “\, being held on November 11\, 2021\, 6:30pm\, via Zoom. \nThis workshop discusses multiple ethnographic explorations on the Lusophone Indian Ocean. Geographically and culturally connecting the Indian Ocean worlds with the Asia Pacific region\, from Macau and Timor to Mozambique and East Africa\, the Portuguese presence across Africa and Asia has left significant cultural heritages and a diversity of archival traces. \nThis workshop intends to introduce the participants to the lusophone Indian Ocean\, a conceptual frame here explored navigating across a plurality of materialities and testimonies. Following the 3rd speaker’s presentation\, a Q&A session with attending online audience will be held (approx. 20-30 min). \nProf. Pamila Gupta will talk about three different ongoing projects: Goan photographers and tailors in Zanzibar\, Baroque heritage in Zanzibar and a Goan sea artist (Subodh Kerkar\, Goa). \nProf. Caio Araújo will present his research on historical ethnographies and archives of the Lusophone Indian Ocean: ethnography of/in archives in Goa and Mozambique. \nProf. Pedro Pombo will share his research on the Goan diaspora in Tanzania\, with an ethnography of material heritages\, spaces and objects that condense stories of migration in Goa\, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
