DESCRIPTION:“Paixão” has many meanings in Portuguese: it can be the interest of something\, the attraction of someone; it is love\, desire\, even resentment and pain; it is a kind of strong feeling. How would you interpret this word? How do you express this feeling and impulse? To promote well-being and self-awareness in college studies\, the English Language Centre is thrilled to launch a meme contest. To showcase your creativity and positivity towards college studies\, you are invited to make a meme which is relevant to our overarching themes – positive messages about ‘Self’ and Learning in the University. The contest is divided into the following three stages: \n* Submission: candidates will submit their meme on a qualtrics form (1 November- 20 November). DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “ETHNOGRAPHIES OF THE LUSOPHONE INDIAN OCEAN “\, being held on November 11\, 2021\, 6:30pm\, via Zoom. \nThis workshop discusses multiple ethnographic explorations on the Lusophone Indian Ocean. Geographically and culturally connecting the Indian Ocean worlds with the Asia Pacific region\, from Macau and Timor to Mozambique and East Africa\, the Portuguese presence across Africa and Asia has left significant cultural heritages and a diversity of archival traces. \nThis workshop intends to introduce the participants to the lusophone Indian Ocean\, a conceptual frame here explored navigating across a plurality of materialities and testimonies. Following the 3rd speaker’s presentation\, a Q&A session with attending online audience will be held (approx. 20-30 min). \nProf. Pamila Gupta will talk about three different ongoing projects: Goan photographers and tailors in Zanzibar\, Baroque heritage in Zanzibar and a Goan sea artist (Subodh Kerkar\, Goa). \nProf. Caio Araújo will present his research on historical ethnographies and archives of the Lusophone Indian Ocean: ethnography of/in archives in Goa and Mozambique. \nProf. Pedro Pombo will share his research on the Goan diaspora in Tanzania\, with an ethnography of material heritages\, spaces and objects that condense stories of migration in Goa\, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Maria Valéria Rezende’s Literature. An interview with the author
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “Maria Valéria Rezende’s Literature. An interview with the author”\, being held on November 10\, 2021\, 8:00pm\, via Zoom. \nMaria Valéria Rezende writes poetry and juvenile literature. She is also a translator. In 2020\, her novel “Carta à rainha louca” (Ed. Companhia das Letras) won third place at the Oceans Award and among the finalists for the Jabuti Award. In 2017\, the novel “Outros Cantos” (Ed. Alfaguara) won the Casa de las Américas Prize (Cuba)\, the São Paulo Literature Prize and third place in the Jabuti Prize. In 2015\, “Quarenta Dias” (Ed. Alfaguara) earned her the Jabuti awards for best fiction novel and book of the year. In 2013 she won the Jabuti Prize in the juvenile category with the novel “Ouro Dentro da Cabeça” (Autêntica Ed.). “No Risco do Caracol” was the winner of the children’s category at the Jabuti Award in 2009. \nProf. Raquel Abi-Sâmara (UM) will conducting the interview and conversation with the author. Which aims at covering aspects of her literary creation (writing practices\, methods\, style and choice of themes)\, as well as a close look at specificities of the translation of her work from Portuguese to Chinese. \nDr. Dora Huang (Communications University of China) is a young Chinese researcher and lecturer on literary translations of Portuguese language works to Chinese. She is currently working on Maria Valéria Rezende’s books and will discuss issues raised by certain chosen excerpts in the translation process from Portuguese to Chinese\, with the author.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Methodological Atheism: An Essay in the Second-Person Phenomenology of Commitment” by Prof. Steven Crowell\, Rice University\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95897375782 \nAbstract \nThis talk argues that reason is phenomenologically grounded in commitment\, the experience of being the addressee of a normative claim. Such an experience is the topic of second-person phenomenology. I begin by defending a metaphysically neutral interpretation of phenomenological method (“methodological atheism”). I then contrast Stephen Darwall’s second-person standpoint\, in which normative reasons presuppose symmetrical authority between addresser and addressee\, with Emmanuel Levinas’s second-person phenomenology\, which insists on an asymmetrical authority relation between the addresser and addressee. I argue that Levinas’s account transgresses the methodological atheism of phenomenology and conclude by examining Heidegger’s phenomenology of conscience and commitment. Heidegger shows that the addressee’s responsiveness to the normative is phenomenologically prior to identifying the addresser of the call\, and so prior to Darwall-style “recognitional” accounts of normative reasons as well as Levinasian “metaphysical” accounts.

DESCRIPTION:The workshop “Fado Do Estudante” aims to make known the history of Fado highlighting relevant aspects of the context and its influence as an emblematic symbol of Portuguese culture. The musical performance will provide students with the possibility of listening to live Fado and having contact with the Portuguese guitar and its own characteristics. Afterwards\, students are invited to write short quatrains\, which will be performed by the musicians. Re-imagining the empire through the analysis of (anti-)colonial projections in cinema”\, by Prof. Maria do Carmo Piçarra\, being held on November 17 &  24\, and December 01 & 09\, 2021\, at 6:30pm\, via Zoom at “Casa Garden”\, Orient Foundation.  \nSeminar Syllabus \nThe ‘Estado Novo’ used cinema to impose\, internally and externally\, the image of a pluricontinental and multiracial country. Many ideas propagated were never questioned after the reestablishment of democracy and after the independence of Portuguese-speaking countries.         \nThis seminar\, structured into four two-hour sessions\, will reveal evidence of the (im)possibility of an alternative look to that of propaganda about the Portuguese ex-colonies in ‘Cinema Novo’s’ works that were censored and banned. It will address the uses of cinema during the liberation struggles and will highlight the cases of Goa\, Macau and Timor. It will also consider the emergence of national cinema projects in Mozambique\, Angola and Guinea-Bissau\, highlighting the contributions of some authors. She holds a PHD\, Masters and BA degrees in Communication Sciences. In her post-doctoral research project\, ‘Cinema Império’\, she has worked on Portuguese cinema during the colonial and post-colonial eras in Portugal\, France and England\, regarding representations of the empire in cinema (2013-2018). In this context\, she was  a guest researcher at the CFAC-University of Reading. She is a film programmer and was assistant to the presidency of the Institute of Cinema\, Audiovisual and Multimedia (1998-1999). \nShe has published\, among other books and articles\, Azuis ultramarinos. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/96877800561 \nAbstract \nThe eighteenth century saw the beginning of a circle of cultural exchange that extended from Scotland and Ireland to the United States – and back again. Scots and Irish emigrants took with them a cultural inheritance of music and storytelling that would become filtered through the American experience and would produce new forms of cultural expression. Distinctive material artefacts\, musical instruments such as the guitar and mandolin\, functioned as the mechanism of transmission. Our wayfarers produced a cultural record ringing with sonically encoded narratives. With the figure of the wayfarer as heuristic\, this paper will draw on the discourses of phenomenology and anthropology to explore the implications of the ‘dwelling perspective’ for developing an approach to ‘roots’ music heritage research.

DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Workshop on Oral Expression of Poetry\, by Carlos Nicolau Antunes\, being held on November 25 & 29\, and December 02 & 06\, 2021\, at 6:00pm\, via Zoom. \nThe overall contents which will be presented and worked on throughout the 4 sessions of this workshop include: fundamentals of elocution\, articulation and diction;  sound and musicality in poetry and its conscious use;  words of value\, breathing and rhythmic cadence;  relationship between word\, imagination and emotion;  written Poetry Styles and Poetic Expression Styles. \nEach participant will have the opportunity to orally work on a short poem of their choice (no larger than a sonnet or equivalent)\, communicating it (read or said by heart) to the camera. We will\, case by case\, observe in practice the principles for an effective communication of the poem. \nGoals \nAt the end of the workshop it is intended that the participants are able to autonomously apply the principles for an effective oral communication of a poem. \nMethodology \nPresentation of the principles and contents using expository methodology through multimedia means that facilitate a concrete understanding. Exercises performed in groups that allow the experience of the principles. Work individually with each participant using a poem (or piece of poem) of their choice. The work will focus on the constraints of the style and specificity of the chosen text\, as well as on the potential and idiosyncrasies of each individual. \nPlease scan poster QR Code for registration.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Portuguese of FAH is pleased to invite all those interested to attend the “DPORT Lecture Series – FALL 2021” to be held from December 01 to 03\, 2021\, at 4:00pm\, via Zoom. \nPlease find below the details for the December 01\, 2021 session: \nProf. Lorenzo ROCCA \nSocietà Dante Alighieri \nThe Council of Europe LIAM project: aims and concrete resources \nIn my talk\, I will address the role of the Council of Europe\, the European continent’s leading human rights organization\, particularly focusing the attention on its endeavour of supporting the linguistic integration of adult migrants (LIAM). \nRespecting learners’ identity\, their linguistic and cultural diversity\, their particular personal circumstances and their varying educational biographies\, is key to achieve the goals provided by the actions undertaken for LIAM. \nI will give concrete examples of such actions\, highlighting resources in place\, as well as suggestions for stakeholders. More in details\, I will present two tools developed by the Council of Europe and aimed to address the most vulnerable learners\, represented in the first case by refugees and in the second case by migrants with low literacy profiles. \nSHORT BIO \nLorenzo Rocca has a postgraduate degree in the Didactics of L2 Italian. After having been a teacher of Italian as a Foreign Language\, he worked at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. His duties ranged from marking and examining to item writing and running seminars for teacher training. \nSince 2006 he is responsible of research projects at national and supranational level focused on connections between teaching and assessment in the migration context; within this focus he has published articles\, syllabi for language provision and specifications for exams for adult migrants. \nWithin ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) Lorenzo is an expert member\, a member of the Board of Trustees and the chair of LAMI (Language Assessment for Migrants’ Integration) since 2008. \nWithin the Council of Europe\, he is a linguistic expert and member of the LIAM (Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants) project since 2014. \nIn 2020 he was awarded with the national scientific qualification as Associate Professor and in 2021 he joined as Consultant the Società Dante Alighieri. \nIN ENGLISH LANGUAGE \nTeresa Brandão Oliveira \nThis presentation will address the multiple intelligences theory and its relationship with the different learning styles and the art in classes of Portuguese. \nSHORT BIO \nTeresa Brandão Oliveira holds a Master degree in Portuguese Studies. She teaches in a secondary teacher\, writes textbooks and other resources to teach and assess L1 and L2 Portuguese\, and is a teacher trainer. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Portuguese of FAH is pleased to invite all those interested to attend the “DPORT Lecture Series – FALL 2021” to be held from December 01 to 03\, 2021\, at 4:00pm\, via Zoom. \nPlease find below the details for the December 02\, 2021 session: \nDr. Nick Saville \nDirector of Thought Leadership at University of Cambridge Press and Assessment \nSecretary-General of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) \nSystemic Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA) \nThe twin goals of promoting and measuring learning have been characterised as formative and summative respectively\, but this familiar distinction is one which Learning Oriented Assessment challenges\, because it represents these two purposes as fundamentally at odds with each other. A systemic and ecological approach seeks complementarity: informal classroom assessment and formal large-scale assessment should both contribute to the two key purposes of assessment: to provide evidence of learning and evidence for learning. \nIn this talk I will explain these points with reference to several publications\, including Jones and Saville\, 2016 and Saville\, 2021. \nJones and Saville is free to download from this URL: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/Images/639876-silt-volume-45.pdf \nSHORT BIO \nDr Nick Saville is the Director of Thought Leadership at University of Cambridge Press and Assessment\, and is the elected Secretary-General of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). His current research interests include assessment and learning in the digital age; the use of ethical AI; language policy and multilingualism; the CEFR; and Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA). \nNick is a consultant for European institutions including the Council of Europe\, the European Parliament & the EU Commission. In this capacity he has been involved in the development of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) since its inception\, and more recently was an invited Expert for the development and validation of the Companion Volume. He has worked on educational reforms which use the CEFR as a basis in developing curricula and setting objectives for learning and objectives. He has also worked as an advisor to many ministries around the world\, including in Italy\, Mexico\, Vietnam\, Malaysia\, Japan and China. He is currently an Expert for the National Educational Examination Authority\, China and Visiting Professor at Xiamen University\, China. \nMore widely at Cambridge\, Nick has collaborated with Cambridge University Press as co-founder of the Cambridge Learner Corpus (1993) and co-founder/coordinator of the English Profile Programme (2006). He lectures and supervises PhDs in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and Linguistics)\, and is Joint-Director of the MSt in English Language Assessment. He sits on several University Boards\, including: MEITS\, an interdisciplinary research programme in Multilingualism; the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Language Sciences; the Institute for Automated Language Teaching and Assessment; and English Language iTutoring\, providing AI-informed automated systems. \nNick holds a PhD from the University of Bedfordshire in language test impact\, as well as a BA in Linguistics and an MA in TEFL from the University of Reading. Before moving to Cambridge in 1989\, he worked at the University of Cagliari (Facolta’ di Magistero) in Italy from 1980 to 1986 teaching English.
