SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Ultramarine blue. Re-imagining the empire through the analysis of (anti-)colonial projections in cinema
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “Ultramarine blue. Re-imagining the empire through the analysis of (anti-)colonial projections in cinema”\, by Prof. Maria do Carmo Piçarra\, being held on November 17 &  24\, and December 01 & 09\, 2021\, at 6:30pm\, via Zoom at “Casa Garden”\, Orient Foundation.  \nSeminar Syllabus \nThe ‘Estado Novo’ used cinema to impose\, internally and externally\, the image of a pluricontinental and multiracial country. Many ideas propagated were never questioned after the reestablishment of democracy and after the independence of Portuguese-speaking countries.         \nThis seminar\, structured into four two-hour sessions\, will reveal evidence of the (im)possibility of an alternative look to that of propaganda about the Portuguese ex-colonies in ‘Cinema Novo’s’ works that were censored and banned. It will address the uses of cinema during the liberation struggles and will highlight the cases of Goa\, Macau and Timor. It will also consider the emergence of national cinema projects in Mozambique\, Angola and Guinea-Bissau\, highlighting the contributions of some authors. It will give a brief overview of current cinematographies in African countries with Portuguese as the official language\, also particularizing the oriental cases. \nFor Registration\, please visit https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b3379hlDjCzsxw2 \nZoom Link for Session 1 (17/11)\,  2 (24.11)  & 3 (01/12):: https://umac.zoom.us/j/93113547401 \nZoom Link for Session 4 (09/12: https://umac.zoom.us/j/93294398155 \nShort Bio \nMaria do Carmo Piçarra is a researcher at ICNOVA-FCSH and a Professor at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. She holds a PHD\, Masters and BA degrees in Communication Sciences. In her post-doctoral research project\, ‘Cinema Império’\, she has worked on Portuguese cinema during the colonial and post-colonial eras in Portugal\, France and England\, regarding representations of the empire in cinema (2013-2018). In this context\, she was  a guest researcher at the CFAC-University of Reading. She is a film programmer and was assistant to the presidency of the Institute of Cinema\, Audiovisual and Multimedia (1998-1999). \nShe has published\, among other books and articles\, Azuis ultramarinos. SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Workshop on Oral Expression of Poetry
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Workshop on Oral Expression of Poetry\, by Carlos Nicolau Antunes\, being held on November 25 & 29\, and December 02 & 06\, 2021\, at 6:00pm\, via Zoom. \nThe overall contents which will be presented and worked on throughout the 4 sessions of this workshop include: fundamentals of elocution\, articulation and diction;  sound and musicality in poetry and its conscious use;  words of value\, breathing and rhythmic cadence;  relationship between word\, imagination and emotion;  written Poetry Styles and Poetic Expression Styles. \nEach participant will have the opportunity to orally work on a short poem of their choice (no larger than a sonnet or equivalent)\, communicating it (read or said by heart) to the camera. We will\, case by case\, observe in practice the principles for an effective communication of the poem. \nGoals \nAt the end of the workshop it is intended that the participants are able to autonomously apply the principles for an effective oral communication of a poem. \nMethodology \nPresentation of the principles and contents using expository methodology through multimedia means that facilitate a concrete understanding. Exercises performed in groups that allow the experience of the principles. Work individually with each participant using a poem (or piece of poem) of their choice. The work will focus on the constraints of the style and specificity of the chosen text\, as well as on the potential and idiosyncrasies of each individual. \nPlease scan poster QR Code for registration.

More in details\, I will present two tools developed by the Council of Europe and aimed to address the most vulnerable learners\, represented in the first case by refugees and in the second case by migrants with low literacy profiles. \nSHORT BIO \nLorenzo Rocca has a postgraduate degree in the Didactics of L2 Italian. After having been a teacher of Italian as a Foreign Language\, he worked at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT: DPORT Lecture series 1 - FALL 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Portuguese of FAH is pleased to invite all those interested to attend the “DPORT Lecture Series – FALL 2021” to be held from December 01 to 03\, 2021\, at 4:00pm\, via Zoom. \nPlease find below the details for the December 02\, 2021 session: \nDr. Nick Saville \nDirector of Thought Leadership at University of Cambridge Press and Assessment \nSecretary-General of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) \nSystemic Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA) \nThe twin goals of promoting and measuring learning have been characterised as formative and summative respectively\, but this familiar distinction is one which Learning Oriented Assessment challenges\, because it represents these two purposes as fundamentally at odds with each other. A systemic and ecological approach seeks complementarity: informal classroom assessment and formal large-scale assessment should both contribute to the two key purposes of assessment: to provide evidence of learning and evidence for learning. \nIn this talk I will explain these points with reference to several publications\, including Jones and Saville\, 2016 and Saville\, 2021. \nJones and Saville is free to download from this URL: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/Images/639876-silt-volume-45.pdf \nSHORT BIO \nDr Nick Saville is the Director of Thought Leadership at University of Cambridge Press and Assessment\, and is the elected Secretary-General of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). His current research interests include assessment and learning in the digital age; the use of ethical AI; language policy and multilingualism; the CEFR; and Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA). \nNick is a consultant for European institutions including the Council of Europe\, the European Parliament & the EU Commission. In this capacity he has been involved in the development of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) since its inception\, and more recently was an invited Expert for the development and validation of the Companion Volume. He has worked on educational reforms which use the CEFR as a basis in developing curricula and setting objectives for learning and objectives. SUMMARY:Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: Macao Humanities Forum by Professor Fu Gang from Peking University
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is going to organize the 1st Lecture of the FAH Macao Humanities Forum (2021/2022) on 3 Dec 2021. The forum aims to provide a platform for world-renowned scholars from diverse humanities fields to share their research with the FAH community and other UM scholars. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \nIn this upcoming forum\, we are honored to have Professor FU Gang deliver a lecture on the topic “How do we understand pre-Qin literature and documents? (如何認識先秦文學與文獻).” Professor Fu is a Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts of Peking University\, a leading scholar on pre-Qin literature\, and President of the Chinese Wen Xuan Literary Research Association. His representative works include History of Poetry in the Wei\, Jin\, Southern and Northern Dynasties\, Research on the Selections of Refined Literature (Wen Xuan)\, Research on Editions of Wen Xuan\, Commentary on the Biography of Xiao Tong (co-authored)\, New Songs from the Jade Terrace and Southern Dynasty\, as well as Studies on Literature and Documents of the Han\, Wei\, and Six Dynasties. \n  \nDetails of the forum are as follows:\nSpeaker: Professor FU Gang\nDate: 3 Dec 2021 (Friday)\nTime: 10:30 am – 12:00 pm\nVenue: Zoom\nLanguage: Mandarin (with simultaneous interpretation in English)\nTopic: How do we understand pre-Qin literature and documents?\nThe study of pre-Qin literature begins with solving the problem of documents. Unlike later dynasties\, pre-Qin is divided into the Xia\, Shang\, Zhou\, Eastern Zhou\, and Warring States stages. In each stage\, the nature and characteristics of the documents were different\, and could not be summarized in general terms. There was no clear division of disciplines in the pre-Qin period\, and the discipline of literature was not established; therefore\, it is not possible to conduct research on the concept of post-Qin literature. In today’s academic research in literature\, history\, and philosophy\, it is necessary to understand the nature and characteristics of pre-Qin literature. \n  \nThe lecture will be conducted in Mandarin with simultaneous interpretation into English. Please register for the forum by 1 Dec 2021 (Wed) via https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9NVi6G3QVUBcK90 \n  \nFor more information\, kindly refer to the below poster.

\nPlease find below the details for the December 03\, 2021 session: \nProf. Waldemar MARTYNIUK \nInstitute of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners of the \nJagiellonian University in Krakow\, Poland. \nChair of the Board of Trustees at the Association of \nLanguage Testers in Europe (ALTE) \nLanguage\, Languaging\, Plurilanguaging: considerations on the nature of language and language education” \nThe Author considers the nature of language learning and the relevance of plurilingualism to language and language education. Citing Wilhelm von Humboldt\, he reminds the audience that language is not a product but rather an activity. He then gives a brief synopsis of the philosophy of language before pointing out that as one increases in proficiency in a new language one moves from learning through automation to learning through action and finally to learning through thinking. He then presents a series of theses\, guidelines\, and observations on language development\, language learning and language teaching pointing out that language development is an interpretative and creative process\, which proceeds holistically through increasingly accurate approximations. \nSHORT BIO \nWaldemar Martyniuk is Professor at the Institute of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow\, Poland. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and is a teacher trainer\, author of several textbooks\, curricula\, and testing materials for Polish as a foreign language. Visiting Professor and lecturer at universities in Germany (Bochum\, Giessen\, Goettingen\, Mainz\, Muenster)\, Switzerland (Basel)\, and in the USA (Stanford University). Seconded to the Council of Europe\, Language Policy Division in Strasbourg\, France\, 2005–2006\, and 2008–2013 as Executive Director of the European Centre for Modern Languages in Graz\, Austria. Since 2019\, he has been Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). \nGraham SEED \nEuropean Research Manager in the Research division at \nCambridge Assessment English \nSecretariat Manager of ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) \nTaking account of plurilingualism in learning-oriented language assessment \nIn focusing on the importance of a language learner developing plurilingual competence\, the CEFR (Council of Europe\, 2001) and its Companion Volume (2020)\, are part of a wider shift in the emerging “multilingual turn” in language learning and teaching (May\, 2014; Conteh and Meier\, 2014)\, where the whole linguistic repertoire of a learner is valued. Little focus has so far however been paid to what that means for language assessment. In this presentation\, I will define plurilingualism and its role in language learning and assessment\, making the case the integration of learning and assessment helps us understand the construct of plurilingualism in language assessment. In addition\, I will present a simple framework which categorises the different ways in which plurilingual competence is recognised in assessment and provide examples to illustrate these \nSHORT BIO \nGraham Seed is the Secretariat Manager of ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). He is also the European Research Manager in the Research division at Cambridge Assessment English. His current professional interests include the operationalisation of the CEFR; and multilingualism in assessment contexts. He holds an MA in Language Testing from Lancaster University\, DELTA and CELTA\, and previously taught EFL in Bosnia\, Russia and the UK. \nIN ENGLISH LANGUAGE \nZOOM LINK: https://umac.zoom.us/j/96575800447

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: World Varieties of Portuguese & Portuguese-Based Contact languages
DESCRIPTION:The CIELA open guest talk series World Varieties of Portuguese  and Portuguese-based Contact Languages aims to contribute to the diffusion of current research in the field\, from creole languages to non-vernacular varieties\, emerging national varieties and L2 learner varieties. \nEach session will focus on specific regional or national varieties of Portuguese or Portuguese-based contact languages.  Foir  the current edition spaced out through 3 weeks in December 2021\, the series will cover the following:  \nSession 2 (10/12/21)  8:00pm   Asian Portuguese-based creoles: Sri Lanka Portuguese and Malacca Papia  Kristang \nABSTRACTS \nVariation as an object of study in creole languages: the case of Sri Lankan Portuguese CreolePatrícia Costa Universidade de Lisboa \nAlthough variability constitutes an inherent and universal property of the world’s languages\, the synchronous description of a language does not always include the documentation and inclusion of instances of variation\, since this can be perceived as a marginal phenomenon\, attributable to forces random or resulting from performance errors. In other cases\, due to obsolescence and the small size of communities\, it is the access to a restricted demographic sample and its more or less homogeneous linguistic behavior that leads to the categorical description of certain phenomena. In addition to these more general limitations\, there is also the difficulty of identifying and interpreting instances of variation in under-documented and/or under-described languages\, which neither benefit from previous linguistic and ethnographic research nor from the standardization that other languages have. \nTaking Sri Lankan Portuguese Creole as a case study and the analysis of spontaneous data contained in its documentation corpus (Cardoso 207)\, this presentation will discuss the methodological challenges and potentialities associated with the study of sociolinguistic variation in Creole languages \, often situated at the intersection between contact\, linguistic obsolescence and necessarily idiosyncratic social dynamics. \nCardoso\, Hugo C. 2017. Documentation of Sri Lanka Portuguese. London: SOAS University of London\, Endangered Languages Archive. http://hdl.handle.net/2196/00-0000-0000-000F-CB5E-2. \n  \nThe path of Sri Lankan Portuguese: rise and decline \nHugo C. Cardoso (University of Lisbon\, Faculty of Arts)  \nAmong the set of Luso-Asian Creoles (existing or extinct)\, Sri Lanka (former Ceylon) is notable for having\, at a certain point in its history\, such a substantial implantation among the population of the territory that several agents ( colonial and religious) felt the need to promote a process of description and standardization of the language. Its current situation\, however\, is quite different\, having observed a geographical and social contraction which\, despite not having neutralized the use of the language\, now places it under serious threat. In this communication\, we map\, as the documents reveal\, the path of formation\, expansion and contraction of the so-called Sri Lankan Portuguese. We will also present a set of initiatives that\, in recent times\, have promoted not only the documentation and description of this language\, but also its preservation. \n  \nHans-Jörg Döhla (Tübingen)\, Anja Hennemann (Potsdam) \n& Alexander Teixeira Kalkhoff (Regensburg) \nAspectual markers in papiá kristang. Uses and functions based on an empirical study \nUnlike other Portuguese lexical-based creole languages\, papiá kristang (Malaca\, Malaysia) has three grammatical markers TAM (tense-aspect-mode) that encode only the aspect and mood and\, moreover\, do not combine a with the other (see Baxter 1988\, Pinharanda Nunes/Baxter 2004). The ta (1) and ja (2) markers encode the imperfective and the perfective and lo (3) mark the unreal future: \n(1)       pai       ta         bai       Singapura \n            father  ipfv     go        pn \n‘Father is going to Singapore’ \n(2)       “ja       ola       yo        sa        gatu?” \npfv      see       1sg      poss     cat \n‘“have you seen my cat?”’ \n(3)       Yo…    kore     ake      buraku             lo         intara ku        eli. \n            1sg      dig       dem3    hole                 fut       bury                obj       3sg \n‘I… dig that hole and (we) will bury it’ \nIt is not surprising that papiá kristang does not have formal time markers because Malay Bazaar and Hokkien Chinese as the first substrate and astratum languages of papiá kristang also lack these morphological time markers. Nevertheless\, the temporal integration of events in Papiá Kristang is evidently possible.Based on empirical data (36\,000 tokens) –collected in fieldwork on the basilectal variety of papiá kristang (Döhla 2021)– our study analyzes the linguistic resources for encoding the grammatical and functional-semantic categories of time and temporality. These semi-spontaneous data come from sixteen announcers who narrated a story through forty images. In our corpus we count 1\,086 occurrences of ta\, 1\,537 occurrences of ja and 68 occurrences of lo.In the framework of this study\, we will analyze the distribution and function of formal aspect markers with verbs that express dynamic and static (Aktionsart)\, the interaction between aspect and time\, and the speaker’s perspective (viewpoint aspect). Our investigation presents empirical data on how a purely aspectual formal system works regarding the expression of the temporal deixis. We show how complex coding works through non-complex formal means. \nReferences\nAPiCS = Michaelis\, Susanne Maria et al. (eds.). 2013. Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Language Structures Online. SUMMARY:Workshop on Excellent Teaching Practices - Prof. Jeremy (Winner of UM Teaching Excellence Award)
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is going to organize the Workshop on Excellent Teaching Practices on 7 Dec 2021 at 15:00 in E21A-G035. In this workshop\, we are honored to have Professor Jeremy DE CHAVEZ\, the winner of 2020/2021 UM Teaching Excellence Award\, share his teaching story and some tips in preparing a teaching portfolio. \nProfessor Jeremy De Chavez is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Macau (UM). He has been awarded the 2020/2021 UM Teaching Excellence Award and the 2020 FAH Best Teacher Award. Prior to joining UM\, he held teaching appointments at De La Salle University (associate professor)\, Wilfrid Laurier University (adjunct lecturer)\, and Queen’s University (adjunct associate professor). His research and teaching areas are primarily in Postcolonial Studies\, Global Anglophone Literature\, and Critical/Cultural Theory. \nDetails of the workshop are as follows:\nSpeaker: Professor Jeremy DE CHAVEZ\nDate: 7 Dec 2021 (Tuesday)\nTime: 15:00 – 16:30\nVenue: E21A–G035\, Lecture Hall\, FAH\nLanguage: English \nDescription: The power of a good story is undeniable: it can arouse wonder\, create lasting memories\, clarify concepts\, connect disparate ideas into a world of meaning\, and even forge strong bonds between storyteller and listener. But how can the power of stories be harnessed as a pedagogical strategy? This workshop begins with a sharing session among participants about their own teaching stories toward a collective understanding of effective teaching practices. In the second half of the workshop\, the facilitator will share some tips in preparing a teaching portfolio with the aim of helping participants tell their own stories as teachers through that document. \nPlease register for the workshop by 5 Dec 2021 (Sun) via https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6gQefKj9TNQGdIG

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Poetics of emulation and anthropophagy: Towards a new theoretical paradigm?
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “Poetics of emulation and anthropophagy: Towards a new theoretical paradigm?” by Brazilian scholar Professor João Cezar de Castro Rocha\, being held on December 13\, 2021\, at 8:00pm\, via Zoom https://umac.zoom.us/j/99267767347  (Meeting ID:  992 6776 7347) \nBrazilian scholar Professor João Cezar de Castro Rocha (invited speaker) will give a talk on his new theoretical paradigm\, the poetics of emulation and anthropophagy. The aesthetic concept of anthropophagy was first proposed by Brazilian modernists Oswald de Andrade and Mário de Andrade\, and later it was potentiated by Haroldo de Campos in his »transcriation» (internationally known in the Translation Studies field as »cannibalistic» approach of translation). The talk followed by a Q &A and discussion session will be moderated by Prof. Raquel Abi-Sâmara (DPT-UM) and Prof. Matthew Gibson (DE-UM). \nABSTRACT \nNon-hegemonic cultures face a common predicament: is it possible to identify a common strategy in dealing with the inevitable presence of foreign elements in the definition of one’s own intellectual and artistic identity? Poetics of emulation would be such common theoretical ground from which anthropophagy emerges. In this talk\, this new theoretical paradigm will be presented. \nINVITED SPEAKER \nJoão Cezar de Castro Rocha is Full Professor of Comparative Literature at State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and a researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development\, CNPq. Castro Rocha is a top scholar in Brazil in the last decades\, with a very significant performance not only in academia but also in a wider context. He has received Distinguished Fellowships and Visiting Professorships from several institutions in the United States\, Europe\, China\, and Latin America. \nCastro Rocha is the author of 13 books and editor of more than 20 titles. His latest publications are: Guerra Cultural e Retórica do Ódio. Crônicas de um Brasil pós–político (Goiâna\, Editora Caminhos\, 2021); Shakespearean Cultures. Latin America and the Challenge of Mimesis in Non-Hegemonic Circumstances (Michigan State University Press\, 2019); Cultures Latino-américaines et Poétiques de l’Émulation: Littératures des Faubourgs du Monde?\, among others. \nZoom link: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99267767347 \nZoom meeting ID: 992 6776 7347 \nMeeting time: 8pm (Macao\, China); 09am (Brazil); 12pm (Portugal) \nThe webinar is held in collaboration with FASB\, Brazil\, through Prof. Murilo Jardelino – co-organizer and moderator of previous webinars organized by CIELA. \nLANGUAGE: ENGLISH (Q&A session can also include participation in Portuguese)

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Ethnography and Archiving: the Presence of Macau in the Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “Ethnography and Archiving: the Presence of Macau in the Indian Ocean” by Prof. Pedro Pombo (Goa University) \, being held on December 15 and 17\, 2021\, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm\, via Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/91846133353?pwd=Mk5SdzB1ekJHUlJrK0lSWVpoaUlBZz09 \nRegistration link: https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_enFqWCxlBnMeiKW \nABSTRACT \nThis workshop draws on Macao documentation to be found in various archives in the Indian Ocean. \nSession 1 will cover Macau’s role in the transoceanic transport routes of Chinese workers hired throughout the 19th century\, through the traces that these circulations left in various archives in the Indian Ocean and in local cultural heritage. \n  \nSession 2 will take a closer look at Macau as a key connection between the Pacific and Indian oceans through documentation that evidence how the routes of contract workers from the 19th century directly connected the port of Macau to the Caribbean and South America\, inserting this territory in extensive transoceanic networks. \n  \nBoth sessions of this workshop offer participants the opportunity to follow the methodologies and conceptual bases of an investigation that crosses archive and ethnography\, history and the present time\, historical documents and the sensory world of contemporary societies that translate centuries of maritime circulations. \n  \nLANGUAGE:  ENGLISH
