DESCRIPTION:FAH will launch the 1st ROUNDTABLE in May this year. The FAH is committed to achieving research excellence while striving for the nurturing of a research sharing culture. The Roundtable will serve as an excellent platform for FAH colleagues and PhD students to share and showcase their ongoing or recent research with their colleagues and students. As many of you may have experienced in your research endeavor\, sharing and discussing a research project and its (preliminary) findings with colleagues and students is a rewarding experience in that feedback received through this kind of exchange of ideas and insights often helps in enhancing the quality of the publications. \n  \nTo that aim\, the Organizing Committee of the MACAO HUMANITIES ROUNDTABLE cordially invites all FAH academic staff\, and the PhD students (who have passed their thesis proposal assessment)\, to present their research at this event. When stereotypes are hold against particular groups of people according to their characteristic differences  (e.g. categorized by gender\, nationality\, ethnicity or even sexuality)\, this could be fundamentally detrimental to people’s intercultural competence and their ability to communicate globally and boundlessly\, which are specifically important for any language learners. Likewise\, as an effective English user\, students should be aware of any inappropriate presumptions in the language that they use and other people use while being able to question\, analyze\, criticize and correct these prejudices. In other words\, to identify stereotypes essentially involves critical thinking skills as students will need to challenge a widely-believed presumption which may possibly also be believed by themselves. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Temporal experience\, metaphysics\, and metametaphysics\, or: on philosophising about temporal experience” by Prof. Natalja Deng\, Yonsei University\, South Korea
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99695878157 \nAbstract \nIn this talk\, I would like to explore some meta-theoretical questions regarding current debates about temporal experience\, by which I mean questions about how best to conceive of what is at stake in those debates. I begin by introducing the question of how we perceive temporal phenomena at all\, and briefly consider a suggested reformulation of that question. I then turn to the question of whether time really passes\, and whether we experience time as really passing. I examine both a metaphysics-first approach to this issue\, and then the reformulation implicit in Craig Callender’s book ‘What makes time special?’ (OUP 2017). I conclude that as a reformulation\, the latter does not succeed. I end with some remarks on where philosophy of temporal experience might go from here.

SUMMARY:Macao Humanities Forum: The Responsibility and Mission of Translation Scholars in the New Era
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is going to organize the 2nd Lecture of the FAH Macao Humanities Forum (2021/2022) on 14 Mar 2022. The forum aims to provide a platform for world-renowned scholars from diverse humanities fields to share their research with the FAH community and other UM scholars. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \nIn this upcoming forum\, we are honored to have Professor XU Jun deliver a lecture on the topic “The Responsibility and Mission of Translation Scholars in the New Era (新時期翻譯學人的責任與使命).” Professor Xu Jun is currently a senior professor of humanities\, supervises doctoral students\, and is director of the Chinese Translation Academy at Zhejiang University. He was convener of the Foreign Languages and Literatures Review Committee of the Sixth and Seventh Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council\, deputy director of the First to Third National Steering Committee for Master’s Degree Training in Translation\, executive vice president of the Translators Association of China\, and judge of the Five Continents Literature Prize of the International Organization of Francophonie. He is also a member of the editorial board of nearly 20 academic journals at home and abroad\, including Meta\, Babel\, Foreign Language Teaching and Research\, Chinese Translators Journal and Foreign Languages. He has written and translated widely. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Portuguese of FAH is pleased to invite all those interested to the online Seminar “Macao as the origin of Chinese Chilli Pepper’s Culture” by Prof. Jin Guoping\, being held on March 15\, 2022\, at 7:30pm\, via Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/9970692667?pwd=ZDNaak1RZG4wT09GQ0NmYjFCVTkxUT09 \nABSTRACT \nChina is now the largest producer and consumer of Chili peppers in the world. The Chinese have known of the existence of Chili peppers for only 429 years. The first reference to Chili peppers in Chinese classic texts is in 1591. Before that\, of course\, Chili peppers had already been introduced to China. Chili peppers went from ornamental to edible. It has become a long-lasting “spicy whirlwind” on the Chinese table. \nChili peppers are native to Central and South America. It was Columbus who brought Chili peppers back to Europe\, starting the “Columbian Exchange”. It was then spread by the Portuguese to Africa and Asia. Even in Europe\, it was the Portuguese who are credited with its spread. The route of the Chili peppers to Asia was from Pernambuco in Brazil to Cochim and Goa in India. It may then have been introduced to Tibet from India by land. From the sea it spread to Malacca\, Thailand and Burma. Then possibly from Burma to Yunnan via the ancient Burma-Yunnan route\, and then to Guizhou. Another possible route was to Zhejiang province by the Portuguese who began to operate in Shuangyu (Liampó) in 1524. It then followed the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal into the Yangtze River and spread westwards. Another route was the spread to northern China via the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It was also spread from Shuangyu to Japan\, where it was then imported into Korea. \nHistorical sources show that es in south-west China were imported from Macau. This is reflected in the names “Hai Jiao(maritime Chili)” and “Guang Jiao(Canton’s Chili)”. The name “maritime Chili” refers to the nature of the species imported from abroad\, while the name “Canton’s Chili” clearly indicates that it was imported from Canton. Given that Macao was the only port of commerce in China prior to the Opium Wars\, it must have been through Macao\, in Canton\, that the “Canton’s Chili” was introduced to south-western China. Chili peppers brought a new taste sensation to the Chinese diet. It led to a “Chili Pepper’s Revolution” and the creation of a “Chili Pepper’s Culture” in China. \nIn this talk\, we will also introduce in detail the various names for Chili peppers and their meanings in Spanish and Portuguese. The etymology of the English name\, Chili pepper\, will be explained. We would like to highlight once again the great influence that Macao has had on Chinese history and Chinese culture. This influence is reflected in the Chili peppers. More important to the Chinese than the fleeting need for silver\, Chili peppers has influenced the taste of Chinese food and become one of the characteristics of Chinese culture\, the origins of which can be traced back to the arrival of the Portuguese in the East and their establishment in Macao. \nGUEST BIOGRAPHY \nProf. Jin Guoping is a Visiting Professor of the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies at Macau University of Science and Technology. He is also a Research Fellow at the Center for Macaology at Jinan University.\nHe graduated from the Spanish Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University\, majoring in Spanish and Portuguese. He also holds a higher degree in Portuguese Culture and Language at the Department of Literature\, University of Lisbon\, Portugal and is an Academician of the Portuguese Academy of History\, having received the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the Portuguese Republic.

This year his centennial birth anniversary is being celebrated worldwide by many academic and non-academic institutions. The Department of Portuguese at FAH/UM\, through its Research Centre\, CIELA\, will also commemorate this occasion with two open online tributes. \n1st  Tribute  \nOpen Online Seminar \nIntroduction to Saramago’s Work \n This 3 session seminar will provide and introduction to Saramago’s main lines of thought and creativity developed throughout his vast literary production\, through the presentation\, comments and analysis of two of his works: O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis (‘The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis’) and Viagem a Portugal (‘Voyage to Portugal’). It proposes these two works as bearing the pillars of Saramago’s literary creation transversal to the author’s remaining production. \nThe seminar will be given by Prof. Helena Buescu (University of Lisbon\, Portugal)\, and held  Portuguese. The main target audience is advanced Graduate and Postgraduate students pursuing or interested in Portuguese language literary studies. But all others interested in attending are very welcome. \nGUEST BIOGRAPHY \nProfessor Helena Carvalhão Buescu is a Professor of Comparative Literature and Portuguese Literature at the Faculty of Letters\, University of Lisbon. She has collaborated\, taught and been invited to some of the most prestigious international universities in the United States\, Europe\, Brazil and Macao. She is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the European Academy\, and has received several awards for her essays. She is currently directing the project Comparative World Literature in Portuguese\, having published to date four of the seven due volumes\, by the publisher Tinta-da-China\, in Lisbon. She is a poet\, with two poetry books published in Portugal and several essays published in Portugal and overseas. She is also part of several Portuguese and European evaluation committees.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Time without Events of time” by Prof. Gregory Landini\, University of Iowa\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94985864920 \nAbstract \nTime\, it might be said\,  is concerned with the nature of the past\, the present and the future\, with variants of  presentism and eternalism and (non-static) growing block the leading metaphysical theories.  But this is hardly clarifying.  Presentism is often characterized as the thesis that only the present exists\, while the others embrace more. If the positions and the distinctiveness of presentism should turn on the dubious assumption of a property of ‘existing’ (present tense) or ‘being present’\, then the substantive nature of the debates may well deserve to be viewed as dubious.  Another questionable assumption\, I argue\, is that temporal relations and our understanding of tense requires a commitment to events (at least as concrete if not abstract particulars). The tenseless predication required for the characterization of events generates the static image of  events standing (tenselessly) in an external relation of temporal order—an order that seems able to be modeled by applying mathematical kinds of ordering.  The success of Einstein’s special relativity\, interpreted as if it requires a theory of space-time events\, has led many philosophers to accept the static image. These are fly bottles.  To plan an escape\, I introduce in contradistinction to a modest event language Le\,  a safe mode language Lt wherein tenselessness comes solely from the use of quantifiers (and accompanying connectives) and all primitive predicates get tense inflections.  It is argued that substantive differences in theories of time can be captured within Lt and that embracing events is not required for understanding tense inflections. It is hoped that\, without events and the static image they bring\, a new interpretation of special relativity as a non-static theory may be  developed.  This interpretation has the striking consequence that the implications of special relativity have been misconstrued.  A clock runs slow relative to an inertial frame in such a way that its hands always stay in lock-step with another running at a different rate relative to a frame.   It will be found\, however\, that this is of no consolation to presentism.

The UM Department of English would like to acknowledge that achievement by again recognising the Best English Studies essays this coming Prize Day. \nThe Best English Studies Essay prizes recognise excellence in the work you are doing every day in linguistics and literary studies. Creative writing should not be submitted. The essay you submit should be an academic essay you have written in response to a regular assignment in one of the English Department’s courses in these areas this academic year. The competition is open to students enrolled in English Department courses at any undergraduate level and to essays of any length. Prizes will be awarded for each of the four years of the program\, though the organisers reserve the right not to award a prize if essays are not of sufficiently high standard.
