DESCRIPTION:SEMINÁRIO HÍBRIDO  \nPortuguês como Língua Pluricêntrica:  \nconceitos e implicações em sala de aula \n28-30/04/2023 \nPROGRAMAÇÃO PLURI 2023 — MESAS E NOMES \nCADERNO DE RESUMOS DO PLURI 2023 \nLINKS PARA AS TRANSMISSÕES ONLINE – PLURI 2023 \n  \nUniversidade de Macau \nUniversidade de São José \n  \nPrezados professores\, estudantes e parceiros\, \nO Departamento de Português da Universidade de Macau e o Departamento de Línguas e Cultura da Universidade de São José realizarão o seminário híbrido “PLURI 2023 – Português como Língua Pluricêntrica: conceitos e implicações em sala de aula”\, a ter lugar em Macau\, China\, entre 28 e 30 de abril de 2023. \nO seminário conta com o apoio do Instituto Guimarães Rosa (IGR) do Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil (MRE)\, do Consulado-Geral do Brasil em Hong Kong e do Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR)\, e com as parcerias do Instituto Internacional da Língua Portuguesa (IILP)\, do Centro de Linguística da Universidade do Porto (CLUP)\, do Observatório de Português Língua Estrangeira/Segunda Língua\, da Cátedra UNESCO em Políticas Linguísticas para o Multilinguismo e da Casa do Brasil em Macau. \nO PLURI-2023 é sobretudo uma plataforma para a formação de professores. Busca oferecer um espaço de reflexões teórico-práticas sobre ensino com base em conceitos contemporâneos de língua\, cultura\, identidade e comunidades. Esperamos\, assim\, partilhar ideias e práticas com professores de diferentes níveis de ensino. \nO eixo norteador será a discussão da concepção do Português como Língua Pluricêntrica. O conceito de pluricentrismo\, ao mesmo tempo em que abriu espaço para legitimar as diferentes variedades das línguas\, trouxe ainda vestígios de uma linguística fundada em modelos centro-periféricos\, típicos de epistemologias coloniais que continuam situando algumas línguas e as suas comunidades em lugares desprivilegiados. Nesse sentido\, o encontro busca refletir sobre o conceito e discutir o seu impacto e a sua aplicação prática nas salas de aula da contemporaneidade. Exciting news from the English Writing and Communication Centre (EWCC)\, English Language Centre of FAH! \nIn March 2023\, EWCC is holding our first-ever “Communication Month” to celebrate the joy of speaking and effective communication! Our theme this year is:  “Sit Down\, Speak Up.” Our featured activities include an Open House event\, three workshops in the “Guest Talk Series” and three workshops in the “Academic Workshop Series”. \nOur Open House on 8th March welcomes students to freely drop by at EWCC. Students can know more about EWCC and have fun speaking English. This day will mark the onset of the Communication Month. The rest of our activities throughout the month will give students the opportunity to “sit down” among peers and “speak up”\, putting what they have learned in the workshops into practice. Through this workshop\, students will come to an understanding of their learning styles and preferences.  Suggestions will be shared on how to help students make the most of their learning preferences and have a good and memorable learning experience at university. \n\n\n\n“Communicate with Self Portraits” workshop – COMPELTED \n\nLearn contemporary and historical photographic trends.\nPractice English to critique photos with the correct terminologies.\nEmploy effective techniques in photography including composition\, lighting\, colour and image quality\n\n  \nThis is a 2-session workshop where students will develop an understanding of the use of English related to contemporary and historical photographic trends.  In the first session\, students will consider the grammar and vocabulary of photography (i.e. color\, composition\, camera functions and movement) and analyze how famous photographers have used these to communicate ideas and feelings. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “After Order: Interregnum and Ethics of Disorder in Global Politics” by Prof. Xiaoyu Lu\, Peking University\, China
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/98714060738 \nPassword: 895191 \n  \nAbstract \nDeparting from the concept of “failed world”\, this lecture explores the politics of co-living in the time of uncertainty. The liminal and in-between state of international society is no longer a state of exception\, but a state of inception that introduces overlapping layers of hybrid orders and norms. Instead of proposing alternative world orders as attempts to formulate a minimalist morality\, this lecture overturns the direction of inquiry and asks how we can manage to live in disorder\, in the absence of normative consensus. It proposes a new form of cosmopolitanism\, that is built on and adapted to contingencies\, risks and ruins of our existing political and ecological disasters\, and envisions an emancipatory politics of dissensus. \n  \nBio \nXiaoyu Lu is an Assistant Professor at School of International Studies at Peking University and was a Research Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. Xiaoyu received MSc and DPhil degrees in Politics at St Antony’s College\, University of Oxford\, and previously worked at the United Nations Development Programme. His research focuses on conflict and peace\, and International Relations theory\, with field experience in Syria\, Lebanon\, Myanmar and Colombia. He is the founding director of PeaceLab that promotes conflict and peace studies and dialogues in China. His monograph titled Norms\, Storytelling and International Institutions in China: The Imperative to Narrate is published with Palgrave MacMillan in 2021.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Guest Lecture – “Kant's Philosophy of Moral Luck” by Prof. Samuel Kahn\, Indiana University-Purdue University\, Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95785802564 \nPassword: 884651 \n  \nAbstract \nIn the modern moral luck debate\, Kant is standardly taken to be the enemy of moral luck. My goal in this paper is to show that this is mistaken. The paper is divided into six sections. In the first\, I show that participants in the moral luck literature take moral luck to be anathema to Kantian ethics. In the second\, I explain the kind of luck I am going to focus on here: consequence luck\, a species of resultant luck. In the third\, I explain why philosophers have taken Kantian ethics to reject moral luck and\, in particular\, consequence luck. In the fourth\, I explain why these philosophers are mistaken\, and I set out Kant’s theoretical framework for consequence luck. In the fifth\, I clarify and defend this framework\, and in the sixth\, I interrogate and attack it. \n\nBio \nSamuel Kahn is currently an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Indiana University-Purdue University\, Indianapolis. He received dual degrees in Philosophy and Bioengineering in 2005 from the University of Pennsylvania\, and he received a PhD in Philosophy in 2012 from Stanford University. He has been the recipient of numerous prizes and scholarships\, including a Fulbright in 2008 and a Geballe in 2011. In 2013 Samuel won the Review of Metaphysics dissertation essay contest\, and in 2015 he was included in the Prindle Institute for Ethics Young Philosophers Lecture Series. His work on Kant has won the prestigious Markus Herz prize (2011)\, and he is the first person to win the North American Kant Society Wilfrid Sellars prize twice (2019\, 2021). He has published over 30 articles and book reviews in journals including Ethics\, Kantian Review\, Kant Studien\, and British Journal for the History of Philosophy. His first research monograph\, Kant\, Ought Implies Can\, the Principle of Alternate Possibilities\, and Happiness\, appeared with an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield in 2018; his second\, Kant’s Theory of Conscience\, appeared in the Cambridge University Press Element series in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of text-paratext symbiotic narratology\, elucidating its concepts\, narrative communication situations\, and critical frameworks. The three autobiographies of Frederick Douglass\, which are considered classics of American slave narratives\, will be examined and analyzed through the lens of text-paratext symbiotic narratology\, thus uncovering the unique role and significance of text-paratext symbiotic relation\, and how it contributes to a deeper understanding and interpretation of textual works. \n  \nBiography: \nProfessor Xu Dejin is the Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Sun Yat-sen University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Literature from Peking University. He is granted the Distinguished Scholar of Sun Yat-sen University and was awarded the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University and the Hundred Talents Program for Young Social Scientists in Beijing. He also serves as the director of China Foreign Language Bureau’s Innovation Base for Foreign Discourse\, the distinguished researcher at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Development Institute of China Top Think Tanks\, and the chairman of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Foreign Language and Literature Union. Up till now he has published over 60 articles in leading academic journals around the world\, authored four books\, translated seven books\, and edited more than 20 textbooks (10 of which were selected for the National Twelfth Five-Year Plan). He has hosted (including completed) two projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China and eight provincial and ministerial projects.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nTranslation norms for legislative language constitute an essential part of the normalization of legislation. Non-normative expression of legal provisions imperils the quality of legislation\, which further impacts the development of legal education\, judicial practice and law enforcement. So far\, China has come to noticeable fruition in the normalization of legislative language\, but more efforts are in urgent needs with regard to the systematization and institutionalization of linguistic norms. Furthermore\, few efforts have been devoted to establishing norms for the translation of legislative texts. The session will be conducted in English. \nABSTRACTS \nThe Re-location of Robinson Crusoe in China: Global Context and Local Dynamics \nProf. Ren Haiyan \n(Hunan Normal University) \nRobinson Crusoe is more than a myth of modern individualism as Ian Watt labels. It is an embodiment of the Enlightenment ideology. When this modern myth first arrived in China via Japan at the turn of the 20th century\, it has been intentionally appropriated. This paper examines several translations in the early 20th century to reflect on how\, in an attempt to continue the Chinese tradition of wenren (literati)\, these translated discourses are expected to contribute to the renewal and transformation of society in a painful period of transition. Meanwhile\, this examination offers a glimpse of how translation has become a powerful contributor to the establishment of China’s academic discipline of foreign literature studies. \n—————————————————— \nThe historical significance of the Brazilian episode in Robinson Crusoe \nProf. Sandra Vasconcelos \n(University of São Paulo) \nMy presentation explores the Brazilian episode in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719). The talk will be followed by a Q & A session moderated by Prof. Joshua Ehrlich (Department of History). \n  \nABSTRACT \nBefore the Chocolate City – Africans in Southeast and East Asia (1800-1960) \n Dr. Clifford Joseph Pereira \n(University of Hong Kong) \nAwareness of the African presence in China in the late twentieth and especially the first two decades of the twenty-first century is well documented by social-science researchers and historians. However\, the presence of Africans in Southeast Asia and East Asia is still being uncovered and the role of Africans during the period of European colonial hegemony in Asia has been largely forgotten. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “On Having and Lacking Certainty” by Prof. Matthew Ratcliffe\, University of York\, UK
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99459515373 \nPassword: 978914 \n  \nAbstract \nThis paper develops a phenomenological account of what it is to have and to lose an underlying sense of “certainty”. By drawing on themes in Wittgenstein’s later writings and also the phenomenological tradition\, I conceive of having certainty in terms of the anticipatory structure of experience. It consists in a practical\, non-localized\, unwavering sense that things will work out\, that one will be able to go on. This also involves the pre-reflective acceptance of a form of uncertainty. I conclude by suggesting that\, by conceiving of certainty in this way and acknowledging its fragility\, we can better understand various different disturbances to which human experience is susceptible. \n\nBio \nMatthew Ratcliffe is Professor of Philosophy at the University of York\, UK. He has also held positions at University College Cork\, Durham University\, and the University of Vienna. His work addresses issues in phenomenology\, philosophy of mind\, and philosophy of psychiatry. He is author of the books Feelings of Being: Phenomenology\, Psychiatry and the Sense of Reality (Oxford University Press\, 2008)\, Experiences of Depression: A Study in Phenomenology (Oxford University Press\, 2015)\, Real Hallucinations: Psychiatric Illness\, Intentionality\, and the Interpersonal World (MIT Press\, 2017)\, and Grief Worlds: A Study of Emotional Experience (MIT Press\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Cesário Verde’s Vision of Lisbon
DESCRIPTION:Registration link (for those who would like to collect Smart Points for the seminar):\nhttps://forms.gle/7rgPNr8UJm1JH5wm7 \nAbstract: Posthumously regarded as a peculiar pioneer of modern Portuguese poetry\, Cesário Verde (1855-1886) started sketching Lisbonian scenery in the latter half of the 19th century. Those urban poems intersected with Verde’s inner landscape got him an ironic name as a Portuguese Baudelaire. This talk will guide the audience to revisit the Lisbonian sites in poems like “Num Bairro Moderno” and “O Sentimento dum Occidental.” Conjoining historical background of the urbanization and sanitation of Lisbon\, we will see Verde’s transformation of memory and reality\, the modernity of his poetic language that is both objective and visionary\, and the underlying associations between the memories of the poet and of the city. \nSpeaker: Dr. Zhou Xingyue\, Assistant Professor of Sun Yat-sen University\, researcher of modern poetry in English and Portuguese. \nImportant Notes on Smart Points Scheme:\n1.
