DESCRIPTION:SEMINÁRIO HÍBRIDO  \nPortuguês como Língua Pluricêntrica:  \nconceitos e implicações em sala de aula \n28-30/04/2023 \nPROGRAMAÇÃO PLURI 2023 — MESAS E NOMES \nCADERNO DE RESUMOS DO PLURI 2023 \nLINKS PARA AS TRANSMISSÕES ONLINE – PLURI 2023 \n  \nUniversidade de Macau \nUniversidade de São José \n  \nPrezados professores\, estudantes e parceiros\, \nO Departamento de Português da Universidade de Macau e o Departamento de Línguas e Cultura da Universidade de São José realizarão o seminário híbrido “PLURI 2023 – Português como Língua Pluricêntrica: conceitos e implicações em sala de aula”\, a ter lugar em Macau\, China\, entre 28 e 30 de abril de 2023. \nO seminário conta com o apoio do Instituto Guimarães Rosa (IGR) do Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil (MRE)\, do Consulado-Geral do Brasil em Hong Kong e do Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR)\, e com as parcerias do Instituto Internacional da Língua Portuguesa (IILP)\, do Centro de Linguística da Universidade do Porto (CLUP)\, do Observatório de Português Língua Estrangeira/Segunda Língua\, da Cátedra UNESCO em Políticas Linguísticas para o Multilinguismo e da Casa do Brasil em Macau. \nO PLURI-2023 é sobretudo uma plataforma para a formação de professores. Busca oferecer um espaço de reflexões teórico-práticas sobre ensino com base em conceitos contemporâneos de língua\, cultura\, identidade e comunidades. Esperamos\, assim\, partilhar ideias e práticas com professores de diferentes níveis de ensino. \nO eixo norteador será a discussão da concepção do Português como Língua Pluricêntrica. O conceito de pluricentrismo\, ao mesmo tempo em que abriu espaço para legitimar as diferentes variedades das línguas\, trouxe ainda vestígios de uma linguística fundada em modelos centro-periféricos\, típicos de epistemologias coloniais que continuam situando algumas línguas e as suas comunidades em lugares desprivilegiados. Nesse sentido\, o encontro busca refletir sobre o conceito e discutir o seu impacto e a sua aplicação prática nas salas de aula da contemporaneidade. Our theme this year is:  “Sit Down\, Speak Up.” Our featured activities include an Open House event\, three workshops in the “Guest Talk Series” and three workshops in the “Academic Workshop Series”. \nOur Open House on 8th March welcomes students to freely drop by at EWCC. Students can know more about EWCC and have fun speaking English. This day will mark the onset of the Communication Month. The rest of our activities throughout the month will give students the opportunity to “sit down” among peers and “speak up”\, putting what they have learned in the workshops into practice. However\, the presence of Africans in Southeast Asia and East Asia is still being uncovered and the role of Africans during the period of European colonial hegemony in Asia has been largely forgotten. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99459515373 \nPassword: 978914 \n  \nAbstract \nThis paper develops a phenomenological account of what it is to have and to lose an underlying sense of “certainty”. By drawing on themes in Wittgenstein’s later writings and also the phenomenological tradition\, I conceive of having certainty in terms of the anticipatory structure of experience. It consists in a practical\, non-localized\, unwavering sense that things will work out\, that one will be able to go on. This also involves the pre-reflective acceptance of a form of uncertainty. I conclude by suggesting that\, by conceiving of certainty in this way and acknowledging its fragility\, we can better understand various different disturbances to which human experience is susceptible. \n\nBio \nMatthew Ratcliffe is Professor of Philosophy at the University of York\, UK. He has also held positions at University College Cork\, Durham University\, and the University of Vienna. His work addresses issues in phenomenology\, philosophy of mind\, and philosophy of psychiatry. DESCRIPTION:Registration link (for those who would like to collect Smart Points for the seminar):\nhttps://forms.gle/7rgPNr8UJm1JH5wm7 \nAbstract: Posthumously regarded as a peculiar pioneer of modern Portuguese poetry\, Cesário Verde (1855-1886) started sketching Lisbonian scenery in the latter half of the 19th century. Those urban poems intersected with Verde’s inner landscape got him an ironic name as a Portuguese Baudelaire. This talk will guide the audience to revisit the Lisbonian sites in poems like “Num Bairro Moderno” and “O Sentimento dum Occidental.” Conjoining historical background of the urbanization and sanitation of Lisbon\, we will see Verde’s transformation of memory and reality\, the modernity of his poetic language that is both objective and visionary\, and the underlying associations between the memories of the poet and of the city. \nSpeaker: Dr. Zhou Xingyue\, Assistant Professor of Sun Yat-sen University\, researcher of modern poetry in English and Portuguese. \nImportant Notes on Smart Points Scheme:\n1. The UM Department of English would like to acknowledge that achievement by recognising the Best English Studies essays this coming Prize Day. \n  \nThe Best English Studies Essay prizes recognise excellence in the work you are doing every day in linguistics and literary studies. Creative writing should not be submitted. The essay you submit should be an academic essay you have written in response to a regular assignment in one of the English Department’s courses in these areas this academic year. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/97086925839 \nPassword: 322991 \n  \nAbstract \nThe problem of evil is widely considered a problem only for traditional Western monotheists who believe that there is an omnipotent and morally perfect God. I argue\, however\, that the problem of evil\, more specifically a variant of the problem of evil which I call the ‘problem of impermanence’\, arises even for those adhering to the philosophical and religious traditions of the East. I analyse and assess various responses to the problem of impermanence found in medieval Japanese literature. I argue that the only response that is potentially satisfactory requires supernaturalism. I conclude\, therefore\, that the problem of impermanence is a unique problem posing a greater challenge to naturalists than to supernaturalists. \n\nBio \nYujin Nagasawa is H. G. Wood Professor of the Philosophy of Religion and Co-Director of the Birmingham Centre for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Birmingham. DESCRIPTION:The Research Center for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA)\, University of Macau\, will hold  two guest lectures given by Professor Shirley Freitas (UNILAB). The first will address linguistic aspects (focusing specifically on phonetic-phonological aspects) of the Kabuverdianu language of Príncipe Island. The second looks at  socio-historical and linguistic aspects of the Portuguese language in Cape Verde\, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Prince. Professor Freitas will be delivering the talks on site\, but the session will also be streamed live via ZOOM. Both sessions will be held entirely in Portuguese. \nABSTRACTS: \n  \nThe kabuverdianu of Príncipe Island  (12/04/23) 8:00pm (Macao time) or 09:00am (Brazil time)\n \nThe migration of Cape Verdeans to work in the cocoa and coffee plantations of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) began at the end of the 19th century and\, over the years\, the Cape Verdean community became significant in the archipelago. General aspects of this migration will be addressed\, as well as the reflections of the arrival of Cape Verdeans in the complex linguistic ecology of STP. Thus\, the conference will focus on the Kabuverdianu language spoken on Príncipe Island\, off the west coast of Africa. Moving on to the discussion of linguistic aspects\, the focus will be on the phonetic-phonological aspects\, comparing data from Príncipe Island with those from Santiago Island (Cape Verde)\, the departure point of most Cape Verdean migrants to STP. \n  \nPortuguese in three former Portuguese colonies in Africa: sociohistorical and linguistic aspects (17/04/23) 8:00pm (Macao time) or 09:00am (Brazil time)\n \nThe conference will address the situation of the Portuguese language in three former colonies of Portugal: Cape Verde\, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe. Thus\, the objective is to discuss the convergent and singular points of these regions. Initially\, we will address the socio-historical context of colonization in each country\, then move on to the linguistic situation and the space occupied by Portuguese (official language of the three countries). Linguistic aspects of the Portuguese spoken in each country\, at different levels\, will also be presented\, from the perspective of their contribution to the understanding that these are three distinct and diverse varieties and not just a reflection of European Portuguese. \n  \nSHORT BIO OF INVITED SPEAKER \nProfessor Shirley Freitas is an Adjunct Professor at the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony (UNILAB) and at the Graduate Program in Language and Culture at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Her BA is from the Federal University of Bahia (2010) and her PhD in Arts and Humanities from the University of São Paulo (2016). DESCRIPTION:Abstract: With the rapid advancement of technology and increased accessibility for interpreting data\, the field of corpus-based interpreting studies (CIS) has seen great leaps and bounds in multiple aspects from the stage of data collection\, processing\, to analysis and visualisation\, as well as data sharing. These advancements have significantly expanded and improved our knowledge of this complex human activity crucial to modern communication. What then\, will be the main challenges and prospects for this field to move forward? Why should we start to “mine” interpreting data? How can we do it? What are the potential obstacles and pitfalls that we should prevent from happening? \nIn this talk\, the speaker will share her experience of developing a couple of (open-access) mega-size corpora in interpreting\, i.e. the Chinese/English Political Interpreting Corpus (CEPIC\, over 6 million word tokens)\, and the Hong Kong Learner Translation and Interpreting Corpora (HKLTIC) set (including the Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting Learner Corpus [CETILC]\, estimated to reach 1 million word tokens). The data preparation and analysis processes of these corpora will be introduced\, and compared with the steps and methods of data mining in computer science. A short workshop introducing the use of CEPIC will be provided. \nThe talk will end with an interactive dialogue with the audience to explore ways to share\, exchange and collaboratively explore data in a possible era of interpreting data “mining”. This dialogue will help to shed light on the future prospects and challenges of the field\, illustrating the importance of collaboration and innovation in this fascinating and complex area of research. \n  \nBiography: Dr. Jun PAN is an Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Arts and an Associate Head and Associate Professor at the Department of Translation\, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. With many years of experience as an interpreter\, Dr. PAN has devoted herself to teaching and researching interpreting and translation\, covering a wide array of subjects including corpus-based translation/interpreting studies\, political discourse and translation/interpreting\, digital humanities\, learner factors & situated learning in interpreter training\, etc. \nDr. PAN serves as Co-Editor of Bandung: Journal of the Global South (Brill) and Review Editor of The Interpreter and Translator Trainer (Taylors & Francis). She is also President of the Hong Kong Translation Society\, Chair of International Relations of the Hong Kong Association of University Women\, and (founding) Executive Committee Member of the University Women Asia (under Graduate Women International).

He began his literary career during his university years\, after graduating from the Chinese Department of Beijing Normal University in 1984. Over the years\, he has written and published many novels\, including Wives and Concubines\, Petulia’s Rouge Tin\, My Life as Emperor\, Rice\, The Boat to Redemption\, and Shadow of the Hunter. Nestes encontros\, jovens e experientes investigadores têm a oportunidade de colaborar ativamente com pesquisas em andamento\, o que permite um contínuo e necessário aprimoramento tanto das pesquisas quanto das áreas científico-acadêmicas envolvidas. \nO Departamento de Português está\, então\, propondo mais uma vez o Seminário de Teses em Andamento (SETA – 2023). Neste evento\, os estudantes de pós-graduação\, em conjunto com os professores\, terão a oportunidade de apresentar os seus trabalhos e colaborar com sugestões para o seu desenvolvimento. \nOs mestrandos em fase de elaboração de tese (2º. ano) e os doutorandos (especialmente os que têm bolsas da Universidade\, da Faculdade ou do Departamento) terão um espaço garantido para apresentar os seus projetos acadêmicos em Mesas Redondas.
