SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Evil and the Problem of Impermanence in Japanese Philosophy” by Prof. Yujin Nagasawa\, University of Birmingham\, UK
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/97086925839 \nPassword: 322991 \n  \nAbstract \nThe problem of evil is widely considered a problem only for traditional Western monotheists who believe that there is an omnipotent and morally perfect God. I argue\, however\, that the problem of evil\, more specifically a variant of the problem of evil which I call the ‘problem of impermanence’\, arises even for those adhering to the philosophical and religious traditions of the East. I analyse and assess various responses to the problem of impermanence found in medieval Japanese literature. I argue that the only response that is potentially satisfactory requires supernaturalism. I conclude\, therefore\, that the problem of impermanence is a unique problem posing a greater challenge to naturalists than to supernaturalists. \n\nBio \nYujin Nagasawa is H. G. Wood Professor of the Philosophy of Religion and Co-Director of the Birmingham Centre for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of Maximal God: A New Defence of Perfect Being Theism (OUP 2017)\, Miracles: A Very Short Introduction (OUP 2017)\, The Existence of God: A Philosophical Introduction (Routledge 2011) and God and Phenomenal Consciousness (CUP 2008).

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Guest Lectures about World Varieties of Portuguese-Based Contact Languages
DESCRIPTION:The Research Center for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA)\, University of Macau\, will hold  two guest lectures given by Professor Shirley Freitas (UNILAB). The first will address linguistic aspects (focusing specifically on phonetic-phonological aspects) of the Kabuverdianu language of Príncipe Island. The second looks at  socio-historical and linguistic aspects of the Portuguese language in Cape Verde\, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Prince. Professor Freitas will be delivering the talks on site\, but the session will also be streamed live via ZOOM. Both sessions will be held entirely in Portuguese. \nABSTRACTS: \n  \nThe kabuverdianu of Príncipe Island  (12/04/23) 8:00pm (Macao time) or 09:00am (Brazil time)\n \nThe migration of Cape Verdeans to work in the cocoa and coffee plantations of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) began at the end of the 19th century and\, over the years\, the Cape Verdean community became significant in the archipelago. General aspects of this migration will be addressed\, as well as the reflections of the arrival of Cape Verdeans in the complex linguistic ecology of STP. Thus\, the conference will focus on the Kabuverdianu language spoken on Príncipe Island\, off the west coast of Africa. Moving on to the discussion of linguistic aspects\, the focus will be on the phonetic-phonological aspects\, comparing data from Príncipe Island with those from Santiago Island (Cape Verde)\, the departure point of most Cape Verdean migrants to STP. \n  \nPortuguese in three former Portuguese colonies in Africa: sociohistorical and linguistic aspects (17/04/23) 8:00pm (Macao time) or 09:00am (Brazil time)\n \nThe conference will address the situation of the Portuguese language in three former colonies of Portugal: Cape Verde\, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe. Thus\, the objective is to discuss the convergent and singular points of these regions. Initially\, we will address the socio-historical context of colonization in each country\, then move on to the linguistic situation and the space occupied by Portuguese (official language of the three countries). Linguistic aspects of the Portuguese spoken in each country\, at different levels\, will also be presented\, from the perspective of their contribution to the understanding that these are three distinct and diverse varieties and not just a reflection of European Portuguese. \n  \nSHORT BIO OF INVITED SPEAKER \nProfessor Shirley Freitas is an Adjunct Professor at the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony (UNILAB) and at the Graduate Program in Language and Culture at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Her BA is from the Federal University of Bahia (2010) and her PhD in Arts and Humanities from the University of São Paulo (2016). Her studies focus especially on Portuguese in the Atlantic islands of former Portuguese colonization and on Kabuverdianu\, Guinean and Papiamentu. \n  \nZoom QR code:

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: 'Unlocking the Power of “Big” Interpreting Data: Insights from CEPIC and CETILC'
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: With the rapid advancement of technology and increased accessibility for interpreting data\, the field of corpus-based interpreting studies (CIS) has seen great leaps and bounds in multiple aspects from the stage of data collection\, processing\, to analysis and visualisation\, as well as data sharing. These advancements have significantly expanded and improved our knowledge of this complex human activity crucial to modern communication. What then\, will be the main challenges and prospects for this field to move forward? Why should we start to “mine” interpreting data? How can we do it? What are the potential obstacles and pitfalls that we should prevent from happening? \nIn this talk\, the speaker will share her experience of developing a couple of (open-access) mega-size corpora in interpreting\, i.e. the Chinese/English Political Interpreting Corpus (CEPIC\, over 6 million word tokens)\, and the Hong Kong Learner Translation and Interpreting Corpora (HKLTIC) set (including the Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting Learner Corpus [CETILC]\, estimated to reach 1 million word tokens). The data preparation and analysis processes of these corpora will be introduced\, and compared with the steps and methods of data mining in computer science. A short workshop introducing the use of CEPIC will be provided. \nThe talk will end with an interactive dialogue with the audience to explore ways to share\, exchange and collaboratively explore data in a possible era of interpreting data “mining”. This dialogue will help to shed light on the future prospects and challenges of the field\, illustrating the importance of collaboration and innovation in this fascinating and complex area of research. \n  \nBiography: Dr. Jun PAN is an Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Arts and an Associate Head and Associate Professor at the Department of Translation\, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. With many years of experience as an interpreter\, Dr. PAN has devoted herself to teaching and researching interpreting and translation\, covering a wide array of subjects including corpus-based translation/interpreting studies\, political discourse and translation/interpreting\, digital humanities\, learner factors & situated learning in interpreter training\, etc. \nDr. PAN serves as Co-Editor of Bandung: Journal of the Global South (Brill) and Review Editor of The Interpreter and Translator Trainer (Taylors & Francis). She is also President of the Hong Kong Translation Society\, Chair of International Relations of the Hong Kong Association of University Women\, and (founding) Executive Committee Member of the University Women Asia (under Graduate Women International).

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/91556908494 \nPassword: 502953 \n  \nAbstract \nOne of the most notable features of the Warring States-period (Zhanguo 戰國\, 453-221 BCE) political discourse is the extraordinary self-confidence of the intellectually active members of the shi 士 (men-of-service) stratum. Having positioned themselves as collective possessors of the Way 道\, these shi intellectuals claimed recognition as society’s and the rulers’ moral guides. One of the major ways of asserting their superiority vis-à-vis the rulers was through proliferation of historical (and quasi-historical) narratives that uniformly placed the rulers at the position of recipients of their advisers’ wisdom. \nIn my study I want to explore the counter-discourse aimed at undermining the intellectuals’ authority. Two texts are most notable in their systematic assault on fellow intellectuals. The Book of Lord Shang (Shangjunshu 商君書) was arguably the earliest major text to turn tables on intellectuals who sought appointment due to their perceived moral superiority; but it was primarily Han Feizi 韓非子\, which mercilessly exposed the moralizers’ fallacies and their abuse of history. Yet the authors’ assault on fellow intellectuals created a paradox. Dismissing their rivals’ subversive discourse\, the authors undermined not just the rivals’ claims to be the rulers’ guides but also their own intellectual authority vis-à-vis the throne. The gains and losses of this “class betrayal” have interesting implications beyond the Warring States-period China. \n  \nBio \nYuri Pines 尤銳 is Michael W. Lipson Professor of Asian Studies\, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on early Chinese political thought\, traditional Chinese political culture\, early Chinese historiography\, history of pre-imperial (pre-221 BCE) China\, and comparative studies of imperial formations worldwide. His monographs include Zhou History Unearthed: The Bamboo Manuscript Xinian and Early Chinese Historiography (2020); The Book of Lord Shang: Apologetics of State Power in Early China (2017); The Everlasting Empire: The Political Culture of Ancient China and Its Imperial Legacy (2012); Envisioning Eternal Empire: Chinese Political Thought of the Warring States Era (2009); Foundations of Confucian Thought: Intellectual Life in the Chunqiu Period (2002). He coauthored three-volume All-under-Heaven: Imperial China (in Hebrew)\, and co-edited five books.

His research interests include cognitive linguistics\, pragmatics\, and cognitive translation studies. \n  \nDetails of the forum are as follows:\nSpeaker: Professor Wen Xu\nTopic: The Grammatical and Semantic Features of the “V1OV2 de” Construction in Modern Chinese and Reasons for its Formation\nDate: 2 May 2023 (Tue)\nTime: 16:30 – 17:45\nVenue: On-Site (E21A-G049) / ZOOM\nLanguage: Mandarin (with simultaneous interpretation into English) \n  \nAbstract: \nThe “V1OV2 de” construction is a commonly used colloquial expression in modern standard Chinese and a typical construct. This study explores the grammatical and semantic features and the reasons for its formation from a construct grammar perspective. The research found that “V1OV2的” is a non-typical verb-copying construction\, and its meaning of construction can be summarized as “explaining the reason why an event has taken place in a certain situation.” This construction is driven by cognitive economy and formed based on a typical verb-copying construction through operations such as transposition\, deletion\, and substitution. Linguistic and non-linguistic reasons work jointly to contribute to the production and use of the “V1OV2的” construction. \nKeywords: “V1OV2 de” construction; verb-copying construction; syntax; semantics; reasons \nPlease register for the forum by 1 May 2023 (Mon) via https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6oiF0kAdHMfoydE. Thank you!
