This talk discusses two core questions facing the interpreting profession and interpreter education in the AI era: 1) Which components of human interpreting can(not) be done by the machine? 2) What changes need to be made for interpreter education to adapt to the new development in technology and in the profession? \nBiography: \nBinhua Wang is Chair/Professor of interpreting and translation studies at University of Leeds in the UK. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL). His research interests include interpreting and translation studies and intercultural communication studies\, in which he has published many articles in refereed CSSCI/SSCI/A&HCI journals and in edited volumes published by Routledge\, John Benjamins\, Springer\, Brill and Palgrave. His recent publications have appeared in Babel\, Perspectives\, Translation Review\, Translation Spaces\, Language and Intercultural Communication\, Chinese Translators Journal and in Routledge Handbook of Conference Interpreting and Routledge Handbook of Chinese Discourse Analysis. He has authored the monographs Theorising Interpreting Studies (2019) and A Descriptive Study of Norms in Interpreting (2013)\, and edited with Jeremy Munday Advances in Discourse Analysis of Translation and Interpreting (Routledge). He serves as co-editor of Interpreting and Society: An Interdisciplinary Journal\, chief editor of Int’l Journal of Chinese and English Translation & Interpreting and on the editorial boards of Babel\, ITT\, Forum\, Foreign Language Teaching & Research (外語教學與研究)\, Chinese Translators Journal (中國翻譯) and Translation Quarterly (翻譯季刊).

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/92442442030 \nPassword: 075742 \n  \nAbstract \nIn the academic debate concerning the apparent problem of belief conspiracy theories\, a lot of ink is still being spilt as to what\, exactly\, counts as a ‘conspiracy theory’. Whilst some conspiracy theory theorists argue that we should keep to the evaluative or normative elements that are commonly found in ordinary language conceptions of what counts as a ‘conspiracy theory’ (that they are ‘mad. bad\, and dangerous’) others have argued that a non-pejorative definition is more useful when seeking to analyse what\, if anything\, is wrong with such theories. By surveying that debate—which is occurring across multiple disciplines—we can see that whatever definitional choice we choose to make in our own work\, it will have serious implications which will affect how we conduct our research into what\, if anything\, is problematic about belief in these things called ‘conspiracy theories’. \n  \nBio \nProfessor M. R. X. Dentith is a leading scholar in contemporary social epistemology\, especially concerning the epistemic status of conspiracy theories and theorizers. Professor Dentith has published extensively in leading philosophical journals such as Synthese\, Social Epistemology\, and Episteme. He has also published a monograph\, The Philosophy of Conspiracy Theories\, with Palgrave Macmillan.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Professors and Students\, \nWe are pleased to invite all to attend the Lecture Series Fall 2023 in Translation Studies by Dr. Félix do Carmo\, University of Surrey\, on 31/08/2023 & 01/09/2023\, from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm at room E21a-G016. \nDr. Félix do Carmo \n \nCentre for Translation Studies\, School of Literature and Languages\, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences\, Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence (PAI)\, Future of Work \nProfessor Félix do Carmo holds a MA in Translation Studies and a PhD in Language Sciences from the University of Porto. He is a Senior Lecturer in Translation and natural Language Processing\, working on the application of natural language processing\, machine learning\, machine translation and assisted translation technologies in translation research\, teaching and practice. Before joining the University of Surrey\, he spent over 20 years as a translator\, reviser\, translation company owner\, translator trainer\, university lecturer and translation conference organiser in Porto\, Portugal. Este é um complexo problema social\, que não vai ser resolvido apenas com novas tecnologias. \nEsta comunicação parte da apresentação de conceitos básicos\, que usamos todos os dias mas raramente discutimos\, para a reflexão sobre questões complexas que podem determinar o futuro profissional de tradutores e outros linguistas. Com base em estudos que analisam as novas tecnologias de língua\, bem como no discurso e práticas da indústria da tradução\, apresentarei uma visão crítica que visa criar condições para que novos e futuros profissionais possam responder aos novos desafios. Pelo meio\, os participantes terão a oportunidade de contribuir para a discussão\, ajudando a ilustrar os conceitos e práticas abordados. In this talk\, I will discuss what is language and how it sustains the current wave of AI technology. I will discuss why the power of this technology derives not only from extremely sophisticated and efficient algorithms\, but also from the complex structures that exist in language. \nBesides this relationship between mathematics and language\, I will approach the social and economic effects of the use of current language technologies\, by exploring the implications of the use of AI and LLMs in professional settings. This theme will provide room for the discussion of myths about the power of machine translation\, the impact of platform and gig business models on knowledge-based professions and\, nevertheless\, this will allow for a positive outlook on the future of professions that work with language. \nIN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Chinese Philosophy and the Method of Sublation: Epistemic Encounters in Transcultural Contexts” by Prof. Jana Rošker\, University of Ljubljana\, Slovenia
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95815495291 \nPassword: 284315 \n  \nAbstract \nThe lecture will be dealing with problems encountered by Western researchers working in the field of Chinese philosophy. It will open with a discussion of intercultural and transcultural methodologies and illuminates some of the most common issues inherent in traditional intercultural comparisons in the field of philosophy. Taking into account the current state of the so-called postcomparative discourses in the field of transcultural philosophy and starting from the notion of culturally divergent frames of reference\, it will then focus upon semantic aspects of the Chinese philosophical tradition and expose the need for discursive translations. On this basis\, a new postcomparative approach in transcultural philosophical studies of Chinese philosophy will be suggested. In this context\, I will propose the application of an innovative principle\, based upon what can preliminary be denoted as the method of sublation. \n  \nBio \nProfessor Jana S. Rošker\, studied Sinology and obtained her PhD degree at the Vienna University. She is the first Slovene Sinologist\, co-founder and long-standing Head of the Department of Asian studies at the University in Ljubljana (Slovenia). Altogether she spent over 10 years in China and Taiwan at several universities and research institutes. Her academic interests include Chinese epistemology\, Chinese logic and Modern New Confucianism. In these research areas\, she has published over twenty five books\, and over two hundred articles and book chapters. She is chief editor of the journal Asian Studies (https://journals.uni-lj.si/as)\, president of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP)\, and the founder\, first president and honorary member of the European Association of Chinese Philosophy (EACP). \nShe was awarded with several prestigious awards\, as for instance the National Slovene Research Agency prize for extraordinary scientific achievements\, the Golden Plaque of the University of Ljubljana\, the National Žiga Zois prize for research work of national significance\, the French-Taiwanese Cultural Foundation Prize\, Bertrand Russell Society book award\, and the most excellent research work award of the University of Ljubljana.

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT \nDrawing from Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the “chronotope”\, the lecture explores the dynamic ways by which spatial and temporal features which are often marginalized in traditional literary studies play a dominant role in structuring the aesthetic of a narrative. Among such features is “setting” as it is often assumed to be merely a passive backdrop of a story as opposed to\, say\, plot or characters that are often assumed to play a dominant role in narrative framing. But as spatiotemporally configured\, in selected Southeast Asian fictional texts which will be the focus of this lecture\, such often-neglected features as setting embody distinct if ambivalent chronotopic images\, throwing the narrative features asunder\, even as they are held together by the very chronotope of the setting itself. Out of this chronotopic tension\, potentially generated are the narrative’s “textual” affective significance and “contextual” thematic relevance.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95782628726 \nPassword: 976123 \n  \nAbstract \nHan Fei Zi’s understanding of human nature is far more complicated than the idea that human beings are bad\, a view that is often. He acknowledges the fact that there is goodness in human nature\, and it could render humans to live peacefully with each other under the condition of plentifulness. But under the condition of scarcity\, humans’ goodness becomes ineffective\, and the pursuit of material profit becomes the main driver of human actions. While the majority can only rationalize about short-term material interests\, the few can do long-term planning. Other than rational capacity\, there is another thing uniquely human\, which is vanity. This is a secondary driving force of human actions. In few places\, Han Fei Zi acknowledges the fact that there are the few who can transcend the pursuit of material profit and vanity\, and hold onto virtues instead. These people are the disruptors of political regime\, and should be suppressed. Between profit and harm\, Han Fei Zi argues that the avoidance of harm is more powerful than the pursuit of profit\, which is a reason that he emphasizes more the punishment than the reward in regulating people’s behaviors. In the end\, I will show a few problems with this rather complicated picture of Han Fei Zi’s understanding of human nature. \n  \nBio \nDr. Tongdong Bai is the Dongfang Chair Professor of Philosophy at Fudan University in China\, and and a member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.  His research interests include Chinese philosophy and political philosophy.  He has two books published in English: China: The Political Philosophy of the Middle Kingdom (Zed Books\, 2012)\, and Against Political Equality: The Confucian Case (Princeton University Press\, 2019).  He is now working on the philosophy of Han Fei Zi (c. 280-233 BCE)\, a “Legalist” and a harsh critic of Confucians\, as well as a real-life princeling who is often compared with Machiavelli and Hobbes. He is also the director of an English-based MA and visiting program in Chinese philosophy at Fudan University that is intended to promote the studies of Chinese philosophy in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Andrew Moody\n14:00: Norms in World Englishes: Three Misconceptions in Applied Linguistics \nThis presentation will briefly introduce the “three circles” model of world Englishes (WE) that has defined research in the field for nearly 40 years. Although Kachru (1986) argued that new English varieties (a.k.a. new Englishes\, world Englishes\, etc.) should be understood within their acquisitional\, sociocultural\, motivational and functional contexts\, the full breadth of contexts have been frequently overlooked within many disciplines in applied linguistics. This paper will briefly introduce Kachru’s world Englishes model and illustrate three common misconceptions about the model in language teaching contexts: (1) the language proficiency fallacy\, (2) the developmental cline fallacy\, and (3) the variability fallacy. In response to these fallacies\, the presentation will also explore the centrality of norms within the WE model and illustrate how norms function differently in media Englishes across the three circles according to concerns related to language authority and authenticity. \n  \nVictoria Lei\n15:00: Unveiling Information Flow in the Brain During Oral Interpretation: A RealTime fMRI Study \nProgress in neuroimaging has significantly contributed to the field of translation and interpretation research over the last two decades\, providing unprecedented insights into brain activities. Oral interpreting\, a complex process that transitions from speech perception to production\, entails diverse overlapping cognitive operations. Yet\, the intricacies of how these domain-general cognitive processes interact with language-specific systems during interpretation remain uncharted territory. This study harnesses the capabilities of real-time Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to elucidate the spatiotemporal dynamics of the brain during oral interpreting tasks. This in-depth exploration offers a holistic perspective of the cognitive mechanics involved. Contemporary neuroimaging techniques such as Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and fMRI only provide either millisecond or millimeter precision but not both\, compromising their efficiency. Due to its lower temporal resolution and the technical challenges\, including scanner noise and speaking induced-head motion artifacts\, fMRI has been somewhat overlooked for studying naturalistic language processing involving overt speeches. Our research has successfully surmounted these difficulties by implementing a phase-encoded design. Leveraging real-time fMRI not only captures precise illustrations of brain activities but also reveals the complex processes unfolding during naturalistic oral interpreting tasks at a sentence level. This pioneering approach maps and visualizes paths of information flow across multiple brain layers\, offering interpretations for various phenomena related to language perception and production. Furthermore\, it aids in the construction of more explicit models of oral interpreting\, advancing comprehension in the field.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/92096145103 \nPassword: 319356 \n  \nAbstract \nThe majority of both traditional and contemporary object-oriented ontologies rely on the presumption that reality has a selfsame structure that exists independently of the human mind\, but nonetheless corresponds more or less exactly to the way in which human beings experience reality. In the present world\, however\, this view is being challenged from two sides: on the one hand\, the calls for a “posthuman” or “post-anthropocentric” approach question the validity of privileging the human perspective against other living species\, together with whom we are facing an ecological catastrophe\, while on the other hand\, the ever more intelligent forms of technology — and modes of surveillance and control that they make possible — infringe on the limits of human social agency in new and unpredictable ways. The talk will propose a systematic view on how to overcome the privilege of the human viewpoint by a reshuffling of our ontological and epistemological discourses through a dialogue of Western philosophical minority traditions and Asian thought\, aiming at a radical process philosophy. \n  \nBio \nProfessor Rein Raud (born 1961) is the Distinguished Professor of Asian Studies and Cultural Theory at Tallinn University. He is the author of “Being in Flux: A Post-Anthropocentric Ontology of the Self” (Polity 2021)\, on which his lecture strongly relies\, as well as “Asian Worldviews: Religions\, Philosophies\, Political Theories” (Wiley 2021)\, “Meaning in Action: Outline of an Integral Theory of Culture” (Polity 2016) and a large number of articles on comparative philosophy\, notably on the thought of Dōgen.

SUMMARY:Celebration of the Centenary of Henrique de Senna Fernandes
DESCRIPTION:Henrique de Senna Fernandes was born on October 15th\, 1923 and passed away on October 4\, 2010. Born into an illustrious Portuguese family in Macao\, he was a renowned lawyer and writer in Macao\, and wrote long and short novels such as The Bewitching Braid\, Amor e Dedinhos de Pé\, Nam Van: Contos de Macau\, Os Dores\, Mong-Ha\, A Noite Desceu em Dezembro\, etc. Among them\, The Bewitching Braid and Amor e Dedinhos de Pé have been adapted into films. Most of his works are set in Macao in the last century\, and they have a unique significance in the presentation of Macao’s history\, customs\, people and landscapes. The writer is also considered by many literary critics as the guardian of Macao’s memory\, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of Macau’s literature and culture. Henrique de Senna Fernandes was president of the Macau Lawyers Association and president of the Association for the Promotion of Macanese Education. He was awarded the Macao SAR Medal of Cultural Merit in 2001\, and an honorary doctorate in literature by the University of Macau in 2008. \nFrom October 16th to December 18th\, 2023\, the Centenary Celebration of Henrique de Senna Fernandes will take place at the UM Wu Yee Sun Library (E2)\, showcasing the writer’s biography and literary works\, as well as photographs of Henrique de Senna Fernandes taken by Yao Feng\, which can help us discover the moments of his writer’s life.
