SUMMARY:Celebration of the Centenary of Henrique de Senna Fernandes
DESCRIPTION:Henrique de Senna Fernandes was born on October 15th\, 1923 and passed away on October 4\, 2010. Born into an illustrious Portuguese family in Macao\, he was a renowned lawyer and writer in Macao\, and wrote long and short novels such as The Bewitching Braid\, Amor e Dedinhos de Pé\, Nam Van: Contos de Macau\, Os Dores\, Mong-Ha\, A Noite Desceu em Dezembro\, etc. Among them\, The Bewitching Braid and Amor e Dedinhos de Pé have been adapted into films. Most of his works are set in Macao in the last century\, and they have a unique significance in the presentation of Macao’s history\, customs\, people and landscapes. The writer is also considered by many literary critics as the guardian of Macao’s memory\, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of Macau’s literature and culture. Henrique de Senna Fernandes was president of the Macau Lawyers Association and president of the Association for the Promotion of Macanese Education. He was awarded the Macao SAR Medal of Cultural Merit in 2001\, and an honorary doctorate in literature by the University of Macau in 2008. \nFrom October 16th to December 18th\, 2023\, the Centenary Celebration of Henrique de Senna Fernandes will take place at the UM Wu Yee Sun Library (E2)\, showcasing the writer’s biography and literary works\, as well as photographs of Henrique de Senna Fernandes taken by Yao Feng\, which can help us discover the moments of his writer’s life. SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: "To be Moved: Affect and Migration in Southeast Asian Literature"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMovement and mobility have always been entangled in how affect is conceptualized and understood. To be affected\, after all\, may also mean to be moved\, as the condition of affectivity traverses senses of displacement\, transformation\, and passage. This is why stories about migration\, of bodies crossing borders and cultures\, are charged with emotions and feelings that are\, in themselves\, fraught with contradictions that intervene in public discourses. This talk looks at the development of affect studies at the intersections of class\, race\, gender\, sexuality\, and postcoloniality while also exploring the emerging literary and cultural texts written by migrant underclass from Southeast Asia. Through the lens of affect\, migrant writings illustrate the importance of the ordinary and the everyday in understanding the larger themes of colonialism\, globalization\, and cosmopolitanism in Southeast Asian literature. \nBiography: \nCarlos M. Piocos III is a professor of literature and cultural studies at the Department of Literature of De La Salle University (DLSU). He has published widely on literature\, cinema\, gender\, sexuality\, activism and transnationalism in international peer-reviewed journals\, and his book\, Affect\, Narratives and Politics of Southeast Asian Migration\, was published by Routledge in 2021. He is also the editor and translator of the anthology of Indonesian migrant women’s fiction\, Bantay Salakay sa Loob ng Aking Bahay (‘Intruders at Home: Anthology of Short Stories by Indonesian Domestic Workers in Hong Kong\, Singapore and Taiwan’)\, published in 2020\, and a poet who have published two poetry collections Corpus (University of Sto. Tomas Publishing House\, 2010) and Kung ang Siyudaday Pag-ibig (‘If the City were the Beloved’\, University of the Philippines Press\, 2019).

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “The Problem of Contingency for the Descriptivist Account of Semantic Deference” by Dr. Ryo Tanaka\, University of Tokyo\, Japan
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/98680905452 \nPassword: 382583 \n  \nAbstract \nSemantic deference is a phenomenon where the referents of linguistic expressions in an ordinary speaker’s vocabulary are determined by the use of the expressions by a group of experts about the relevant subject matter. For example\, the meanings of terms such as ‘elm\,’ ‘beech’ and so on for an ordinary speaker are partly determined by what botanists in her community say about the relevant tree kinds. Traditionally\, the phenomenon has been taken to motivate semantic externalism\, according to which meanings “ain’t in the heads” (Putnam 1975) of individual speakers. Those who challenge this tradition\, however\, attempt to provide a fully internalist-descriptivist account of semantic deference. On the internalist proposal\, semantic deference is a matter of each individual’s cognitively associating a description such as [whatever thing that the experts are talking about when they use ‘C’] with the referential expression ‘C’ (Jackson 1998). In this paper\, I argue that the internalist-descriptivist account faces the problem of contingency: different speakers can\, problematically\, come to mean different things by using the same term\, by identifying different groups as meaning-determining “experts.” To respond to this problem\, one needs to invoke communal linguistic norms that dictate which group of experts speakers should defer to\, given the subject matter (cf. Ball 2020). I argue that implementing this strategy requires adopting some form of semantic externalism in the end. \n  \nBio \nDr. Ryo Tanaka is a postdoctoral researcher in philosophy based at the University of Tokyo\, Japan (JSPS postdoctoral fellow\, History and Philosophy of Science Lab). He specializes in philosophy of language in the analytic tradition and also works in related areas such as philosophy of mind\, ethics\, as well as the Western early modern treatment of these topics. He is currently working on the research project entitled\, “Moral obligation to explicate the semantic rules of one’s language.” He has published his work in journals such as The Southern Journal of Philosophy\, Contemporary and Applied Philosophy (Japanese). \n

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99485044779 \nPassword: 455548 \n  \nAbstract \nBeginning with music\, through the emergence of lyric poetry\, and culminating in the literati brush-and-ink landscapes of the Southern Song\, something happened\, something Kao Yu-kung calls Chinese lyric aesthetic. What is at issue for us here is the nature and character of this happening. I begin with a characterization of the fundamental orientation of Chinese thinkers (as contrasted with that of Indo-European thinkers)\, then turn briefly to the thought of Confucius and of Zhuangzi to expose the intellectual and existential roots of the lyric tradition. The lyric tradition itself is explicated as a working out of the Zhuangzian ideal of resonating\, mirroring things as they are. Since our conception of Chinese lyric aesthetic can seem surprising\, somehow unanticipated\, the discussion concludes with an account of why this conception has for so long gone unremarked\, an account that brings us full circle\, back to the fundamental orientation of Chinese thinkers with which we began. \n  \nBio \nDanielle Macbeth is T. Wistar Brown Professor of Philosophy at Haverford College in Pennsylvania\, USA. She is the author of Frege’s Logic (Harvard UP\, 2005) and Realizing Reason: A Narrative of Truth and Knowing (Oxford UP\, 2014)\, as well as many essays in\, for example\, the philosophy of language\, the philosophy of mind\, and the history and philosophy of mathematics. She was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) in Palo Alto in 2002-3 and has been awarded both an American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Burkhardt Fellowship and a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The world in its original state is the world as it is of itself. It is only when humans function in the world in their various ways that the questions of understanding and shaping the world arise. The processes of people functioning in the world are also the processes of the unfolding of “affairs” (shi). Affairs (shi) are primarily interrelated with actual human activity. According to Chinese philosophy\, “affairs are action” and “all affairs in the world arise from conduct.” “Affairs” also refers to the outcomes of people’s conduct and action. An outlook that sees the world in terms of affairs seeks to understand and shape the world on the basis of actual human activity and its outcomes. \n  \nBio \nYang Guorong is a senior professor at East China Normal University\, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences\, director of the China Modern Thought and Culture Research Institute at the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education\, and director of the academic committee of the university. He is also the Dean of Ma Yifu Academy at Zhejiang University\, Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education\, and a member of the 5th and 6th Philosophy Discipline Evaluation Groups of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. His main research areas include Chinese philosophy\, comparative philosophy between China and the West\, ethics\, metaphysics\, etc. He has published more than 20 academic works\, and various works have been translated into English and Korean. He has been published in Indian University Press\, Brill\, and others. His academic part-time positions include the President of the International Metaphysics Society (ISM)\, Academician of the International School of Philosophy (IIP)\, Former President of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) (2019-2022)\, President of the Chinese Philosophical History Society\, etc.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: ‘Telling Stories with Large Corpora: New Approaches to Language Change and Variation'
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe humanities tell the stories of our shared human experience\, strengthen communities\, and help bridge divides.  -Ohio Humanities Council \nHumanities focuses on understanding meaning\, purpose\, and goals and furthers the appreciation of singular historical and social phenomena.   – Wilhelm Dilthey on ‘Human Sciences’ \n  \nThis talk focuses on how we can turn the multitude of data points (e.g.\, big data) into the story of the purpose and goals\, to understand meaning of ourselves and our society. In particular we will answer three research questions. First how can language tell the story of the purpose and goals\, and interpret the meaning of ourselves and our society? Second\, what are the linguistic devices for expressing meaning\, purpose\, and goal? What are the linguistic cues that can be used to discover them? And third\, how to interpret with linguistic cues the purpose\, goals and meaning of ourselves and our society? To answer these questions\, we underline Language’s nature as a dynamic self-adaptive complex system that is consisted of many linked small worlds and formed by many relations. As such\, language big data or corpora offers continuous sampling over the continuum of time and space. To construct a narrative to explicate this complex system we must adopt and End-to-End paradigm by partitioning the data in more than one way\, e.g.\, both diachronic and cross-sectional. This will allow us to tell a story\, especially how and why it happened and to Interpret it with a shared conceptual framework/ontology. Several examples will be provided to illustrate the points raised. \n  \nBiography: \nChu-Ren Huang is a Chair Professor in the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Focusing on Chinese\, computational\, and corpus linguistics\, he is fascinated by what language can tell us about human cognition and our collective reactions to natural and social environments. He approaches these questions with a deep and comprehensive study of the Chinese language. His recent books on Chinese include A Reference Grammar of Chinese (Cambridge)\, the Routledge Handbook on Chinese Applied Linguistics\, and the Cambridge Handbook of Chinese Linguistics\, His recent papers appeared in Behavior Research Methods; Computational Linguistics; Cognitive Linguistics; Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theories; Humanities and Social Sciences Communications\, Knowledge-based Systems; Language\, Cognition and Neuroscience; Language Resources and Evaluation; Lingua; Natural Language Engineering; PLoS One; etc.
