SUMMARY:Celebration of the Centenary of Henrique de Senna Fernandes
DESCRIPTION:Henrique de Senna Fernandes was born on October 15th\, 1923 and passed away on October 4\, 2010. Born into an illustrious Portuguese family in Macao\, he was a renowned lawyer and writer in Macao\, and wrote long and short novels such as The Bewitching Braid\, Amor e Dedinhos de Pé\, Nam Van: Contos de Macau\, Os Dores\, Mong-Ha\, A Noite Desceu em Dezembro\, etc. Among them\, The Bewitching Braid and Amor e Dedinhos de Pé have been adapted into films. Most of his works are set in Macao in the last century\, and they have a unique significance in the presentation of Macao’s history\, customs\, people and landscapes. The writer is also considered by many literary critics as the guardian of Macao’s memory\, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of Macau’s literature and culture. Henrique de Senna Fernandes was president of the Macau Lawyers Association and president of the Association for the Promotion of Macanese Education. He was awarded the Macao SAR Medal of Cultural Merit in 2001\, and an honorary doctorate in literature by the University of Macau in 2008. \nFrom October 16th to December 18th\, 2023\, the Centenary Celebration of Henrique de Senna Fernandes will take place at the UM Wu Yee Sun Library (E2)\, showcasing the writer’s biography and literary works\, as well as photographs of Henrique de Senna Fernandes taken by Yao Feng\, which can help us discover the moments of his writer’s life. SUMMARY:MLRG Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Ricardo Moutinho \n14:00: Communicating time inside the dome: depicting the periodicity of celestial movements in talk \nCosmological time\, and the connection between time measurement and astronomical events\, are central to astronomy and astronomy communication\, yet people’s use of time concepts in astronomy outreach activities have not received sufficient attention in the research literature. How is time depicted and communicated in outreach contexts? In this paper we present an analysis of the communication of time concepts in planetarium sessions. Participants in these sessions varied: school children between 3 to 12 years old\, families and adults. Data were collected during the summer of 2019. Taking Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (EM/ CA) as our approach\, we analyse instances of actual events in planetarium sessions. EM/CA consider social reality and meaning-making as phenomena achieved and produced by the participants. Transcripts from recordings of these sessions enabled in-depth study of how concepts were communicated. Our analysis reveals that people make sense of time through their in situ work of making an astronomy outreach activity happen. In the data analysed\, a frequent aspect concerning time and time concepts is the connection between time and the periodicity of celestial movements. Time is a ubiquitous concept\, perceived and available interactionally. Therefore\, detailed study of real events can certainly be applied in other areas to reveal how\, in practice\, time is communicated and understood. \n  \nSara Santos \n15:00: Increasing the reasoning demands of a task and task sequencing on the oral production of Chinese learners of Portuguese as a foreign language \nThis study had two aims: (1) investigating the impact of increasing the reasoning demands of a monologic narrative task on the oral performance of Chinese learners of Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) and (2) testing the Simplify Stabilize Automatize Restructure Complexify (SSARC) Model of the Cognition Hypothesis (Robinson\, 2010\, 2011\, 2015\, 2022). Fifty-two university learners of PFL participated in this research. Two comparisons were made: (1) the first one within subjects where two tasks (simple vs. complex) were performed on two conditions (simple-complex sequence/ complex-simple sequence) and (2) the second one among subjects where two tasks were performed vs. the individual performance of a task (simple or complex task). Measures of linguistic complexity\, accuracy\, and fluency were used to quantify learners’ oral production. Robinson’s Cognition Hypothesis has been partially confirmed\, as results showed that task complexity positively affected accuracy\, lexical diversity\, and the amount of coordinate clauses\, but with a negative effect on clause length. Task sequencing had a positive impact on accuracy.

The forum aims to provide a platform for world-renowned scholars from diverse humanities fields to share their research with the FAH community and other UM scholars. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \n  \nIn this upcoming forum\, we are honored to have Professor Tian Qibo as our guest speaker to deliver a lecture on the topic “The Inheritance and Development of Traditional Chinese Culture 中華傳統文化傳承與發展的幾個問題”. Professor Tian Qibo\, a graduate from the Department of Philosophy of Peking University\, is the Executive Dean of the Jao Tsung-I Institute of Culture Studies at Shenzhen University. He is a nationally recognized leading talent in Shenzhen\, and serves as the Chief Expert for a major project funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China. Additionally\, he holds the position of Vice President of the China Society of Hominology. Prof. Tian\, whose research focuses on ecological philosophy and political philosophy\, has published more than 10 academic works\, including Ecological Justice Research and Reflections and Surpassing on Developmentalism: The Evolution and Innovation of Development Philosophy in Contemporary China\, and more than 80 research papers in academic journals ranging from the Journal of Peking University to Modern Philosophy. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/91741709275 \nPassword: 667156 \n  \nAbstract \nTheories of structural\, instrumental rationality generally do not make reference to anything we might call ‘commitment’\, beyond the sense in which all intentions are a kind of settled commitment.  Some views do allow for things like commitment\, resolutions\, or faith to affect how we ought to reason\, but these tend to be characterized as all-or-nothing notions whose role is to preserve inertia by preventing reconsideration and/or desensitizing us to new evidence.  I conjecture that we’re led to this overly narrow conception of commitment by thinking of temptation as the primary cause of giving up on an end prematurely\, and overlooking the importance of obstacles like procrastination and despair.  In my talk\, I will try to articulate a puzzle about acting in the face of uncertainty\, concerning how we should navigate the tensions involved in trying hard to achieve a goal\, while at the same time planning for the possibility of failure and remaining open to giving up.  Such decisions are not only difficult to make\, but also to live with over time.  I argue that our understanding of these dynamics is deepened by bringing in a degreed notion of commitment that involves far more than merely blocking the effects of temptation. \n  \nBio \nSarah Paul is Professor of Philosophy at NYU Abu Dhabi and a Global Network Professor of Philosophy at NYU.  Before joining NYU in 2019\, she was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for nine years.  She is the author of Philosophy of Action:  A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge Press 2021)\, as well as articles that have appeared in Ethics\, Philosophers’ Imprint\, the Australasian Journal of Philosophy\, and Philosophical Studies. She is currently working on a book titled Striving with Jennifer Morton\, under contract with OUP.

In both cases\, I seek to expand on the challenge of mimesis\, made even keener by the emergence of the world-system in the modern era. Shakespearean cultures\, in general\, grew out of non-hegemonic environments; thus\, the poetics of emulation tends to be honed amidst such circumstances. What I seek is to understand the worldview of those cultures and the procedures of this poetics. This is the concern behind the project of a “poetics of emulation” characteristic of Shakespearean cultures\, a poetics articulated in situations of asymmetrical power dynamics. This strategy includes an array of procedures employed by intellectuals\, writers\, and artists who find themselves on the less fortunate side of such exchanges\, be they cultural\, political\, or economic. \n

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/93533585933 \nPassword: 892703 \n  \nAbstract \nMuch contemporary scholarship on ziran and wuwei views these concepts\, which are often coupled\, as being 1) anti-intention\, effort\, purpose\, and self-consciousness; 2) indicative of a distinct type of ethics and/or morality; and 3) a rejection of following custom and convention. This discussion will draw largely on the philosophy of Guo Xiang to demonstrate that these widely agreed upon avenues of interpretation are limited and run contrary to other more nuanced readings of ziran and wuwei. I argue that ziran and wuwei are better appreciated as speaking to attitudes\, that they should be understood in terms of degrees rather than categories\, and that the Laozi and Zhuangzi offer them as advice for ways of reflecting—they are not standardizable ethical rules. In this way\, we can see how ziran and wuwei include intention and effort\, are anti (most forms of) ethics and morality\, and are inherently intertwined with customs and convention. \n  \nBio \nPaul J. D’Ambrosio is a professor of Chinese philosophy at East China Normal University (ECNU)\, fellow of the Institute of Modern Chinese Thought and Culture\, dean of the Center for Intercultural Research\, co-director of the English language graduate program all at ECNU. In addition he serves as research fellow at the Ma Yifu Academy of Zhejiang University. He is coauthor (with Hans-Georg Moeller) of You and Your Profile (2021) and Genuine Pretending (both on Columbia University Press\, 2017)\, author of 真假之间 (Between Genuineness and Pretense) (Kongxue tang\, 2020)\, and editor (with Michael Sandel) of Encountering China (Harvard University Press\, 2018). He has authored over 100 articles and reviews and translated almost a dozen books. Additionally\, he is the founder and director of the online academic forum 四海為學 “Collaborative Learning.”

However\, until recently\, the languages and literatures in the purview of comparative literature were all European\, making the discipline almost inevitably Eurocentric. It is in our time with an increasingly strong sense of globalization and the necessity of transcending Eurocentrism that comparative literature has gradually shifted its focus on non-European literary traditions\, particularly in East-West comparative studies and studies of the Global South. As a comparatist deeply believing in the value of cross-cultural understanding of all literary and cultural traditions\, I have been engaged in East-West studies and worked toward the cosmopolitan vision of treating the world’s literatures as all potentially making contributions to what we can proudly call human culture. The realization of such a vision is possible in our time and it is the task of all comparatists to make it happen\, which will have important implications for the world we are living in today. \n  \nAfter the lecture by Professor ZHANG LONGXI\, a 40-minute documentary about his work\, directed by Prof. João Cezar de Castro Rocha (UERJ\, UMDVS)\, will be shown\, followed by a debate moderated by Prof. Castro Rocha. \n  \nProf. ZHANG LONGXI has authored numerous books including World Literature as Discovery. Expanding the World Literary Canon (2024\, Routledge)\, A History of Chinese Literature (2023\, Routledge)\, From Comparison to World Literature (2015\, State University of New York Press)\, Mighty Opposities: From Dichotomies to Differences in the Comparative Study of China (1998\, Stanford)\,The Tao and the Logos: Literary Hermeneutics\, East and West (1992\, Duke). He was President of the International Comparative Literature Association for 2016-2019. With David Damrosch\, Theo D’haen and Francesca Orsini\, he serves as an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of World Literature.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Professors and Students\, \n  \nWe are most pleased to invite all to attend the following Seminar by Prof. Quintino Lopes\, from the Instituto de História Contemporânea\, Universidade Nova de Lisboa; Universidade de Évora / IN2PAST. \n  \nBIO \nProfessor Quintino Lopes is a Principal Investigator of the FCT-funded R&D team project: “Phonetics Laboratory: Coimbra – Harvard. Rethinking 20th-century scientific centres and peripheries” (2022.06811.PTDC). The value of this research\, which brings scientific developments in the field of Experimental Phonetics during the 20th century into the mainstream of the History of Science\, is demonstrated by the recognition granted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (RSAS) with a one-day symposium entitled “Armando de Lacerda: a pioneer of Experimental Phonetics”. The guest speaker’s leading role in this field is also underlined by the joint publication of a book by Technische Universität Dresden Press (2022) and another by the RSAS Center for History of Science (2023). This research has been adapted as content of the curricular programme for secondary schools across Europe as part of the “Sharing European Histories” project (Euroclio; Evens Foundation)\, and has been translated into 12 different languages. \n  \nABSTRACT \nPHONLAB project: Coimbra – Harvard. Rethinking 20th-century scientific centres and peripheries \n\nSpeech recognition and synthesis technology is ubiquitous in today’s society and Experimental Phonetics provides an important basis for the development of these technologies. Speech control systems used in mobile phones\, digital dictionaries\, websites adapted for users with visual impairments and distance education are examples of new interfaces for communication between humans and machines developed thanks to essential work in the field of Experimental Phonetics. In addition to applications for language teaching. \nThe aim of PHONLAB is to promote knowledge about the development of Experimental Phonetics\, bringing the field into the mainstream of History of Science research. We will conduct a case study of the Coimbra Phonetics Laboratory (1936-1979). Created by Portuguese phonetician Armando de Lacerda (1902-1984)\, the laboratory attracted scientists from leading universities such as Harvard\, Cambridge and the Sorbonne\, who sought specialist training in the use of innovative laboratory research techniques\, absent from other laboratories around the world. The aim of PHONLAB is to contribute to increasing our knowledge of a crucially important but neglected global history topic. We seek to produce a biography of the laboratory\, identifying and documenting methods\, instruments and techniques\, providing recognition for its actors and the scientific networks it was part of. The aim is thus to provide an understanding of the scientific and social impact of the laboratory at the global level. The relevance of this project also derives from the fact that numerous unique historical sources that document the work of this laboratory and portray the evolution of Experimental Phonetics throughout the 20th century are in a poor condition and may be lost. The analysis of these historical sources will enable us to understand the nature and impact of scientific practices at the laboratory\, and could serve as the basis for a comparison with studies of other laboratories. By opening up new perspectives in the History of Experimental Phonetics in the 20th century\, PHONLAB research will enrich historical narratives and contribute to the reassessment of traditional dichotomies such as that of the ‘creative centre’ versus the ‘passive periphery’. Rediscovering early developments in the field of Experimental Phonetics may have a positive impact on our current understanding of Phonetics and potentially lead to new progress in the field. \n\nIN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE \n

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “State Ritual\, Political Legitimacy\, and Religious Practice of the Jidu in Imperial China” by Prof. Li Teng\, Shijiazhuang Tiedao University\, China
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/92871894953 \nPassword: 865371 \n  \nAbstract \nThe Jidu 濟瀆 (i.e.\, the Ji River 濟水)\, was one of the four waterways (sidu 四瀆) in imperial China. Even though it vanished a long time ago\, the Jidu had always been a part of the traditional Chinese ritual system of mountain- and water-directed state sacrifices. From the Western Han dynasty to the Qing dynasty\, it continuously received regular state sacrifices. However\, Western scholars have failed to notice it. Some modern Chinese and Japanese scholars have studied the development of the Jidu sacrifice\, but its embodied political and religious significances for the state and local society were largely ignored. To remedy this neglect\, I provide here\, with new discoveries and conclusions\, the first comprehensive study of the Jidu sacrifice in imperial China. \n\nIn this lecture\, I will analyze the ideas of state authority\, political legitimacy\, religious belief\, and cosmology\, as these underlie the ritual performance concerning the Jidu. I also argue that the Jidu was not only tightly associated with controlling water but was also a symbol and mechanism of political legitimacy. Relying on concrete official and local records\, in the third section I further investigate the role that the Jidu God played in local society. I will prove that\, after the Song dynasty\, the Jidu God was transformed into a regional protector of local society and savior of local people in addition to an official water god. \n  \nBio \nLi Teng is now an Assistant Professor at Shijiazhuang Tiedao University\, as well as post-doctor at Hebei Normal University. He got his PhD in Philosophy and Religious Studies from University of Macau in 2021. He is the coauthor of The Study of Buddhism in Modern Macau 當代澳門佛教問題研究 (The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press\, 2020). He has also published over twenty articles in Chinese and English.

The ELC will select one champion who achieves the highest completion regardless of the level. The champion will be awarded MOP 1000 in book and supermarket coupons. Meanwhile\, the top students at each level who have completed the most will be awarded for their exceptional efforts. For the writing competition\, the top students from UE 1-3 who have completed the writing task with the highest score will be awarded. The winners will also receive a certificate from the ELC. \n  \nAll students enrolled in ELC courses in 2023/24 are automatically registered as i-Learner users. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/92487286224 \nPassword: 849412 \n  \nAbstract \nIn what he calls the “obligatory chapter” of his monograph Isn’t It Clever\, Steven Gimbel surveys a number of traditional theories of humor: the superiority theory\, the inferiority theory\, the incongruity theory\, the script-opposition theory\, the cognitive-evolutionary theory\, the relief theory\, and\, finally\, the play theory. Of this last view\, he says: “play theory […] is a view that virtually no philosopher holds\, but which everyone includes in their obligatory cataloguing of theories of humor” (p. 31). People list the view because there is something undeniably attractive about a play theory of humor and yet\, they reject it because it is also undeniable that not all humor is playful. In this talk\, I will to convince you to join this virtually non-existent group of play theorists by laying out a version of the play theory—one that sees humor not just as play but as game-play. In particular\, I will draw on insights from Thi Nguyen’s Games: Agency as Art to show that the gameplay view explains many of the aesthetic and ethical features of humor. \n  \nBio \nTatyana Kostochka is an assistant professor of philosophy at Ashoka University in Sonipat\, India. She completed her PhD at the University of Southern California. Tatyana’s research is divided between two areas: moral psychology and Buddhist philosophy. In moral psychology\, she is primarily interested in exploring the nature of moods and how they alter the way we interact with the world. In Buddhist philosophy\, she is especially concerned with medieval Chinese and Japanese discussions about the precept against killing.
