DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to announce that the 1st Lecture of the FAH Macao Humanities Forum (2024/2025) will be held on 13 September 2024. The forum aims to provide a platform for world-renowned scholars from diverse humanities fields to share their research with the FAH community and other UM scholars. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \n  \nIn this upcoming forum\, we are honored to have Prof. Ge Zhaoguang as our guest speaker to deliver a lecture on the topic “Imagine A Great Empire? A Study of Forged Li Gonglin’s Wanfang Zhigongtu”. Prof. Ge is a Distinguished Professor and the Founding Director of National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University. A graduate from Peking University and formerly a Professor at Tsinghua University\, Prof. Ge was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities by the Hong Kong Education University\, and recognised by Princeton University as the “Princeton Global Scholar” in 2009. Prof. Ge‘s accolades include: the winner of the “Asia-Pacific Award” in Japan and “Paju Book Award” in South Korea and Hong Kong Book Award\, among others. The pride and confidence of the empire were expressed through the contrast of the exotic features of foreign envoys who arrived in an imaginative great empire that was prominent to the surrounding tributaries. This tradition was handed down even to the Song dynasty at a time of territory decreasing and national assimilation. This talk presents a case study of forged Li Gonglin’s Wanfang zhigongtu，and examines the tribute exchanges between the Northern Song and its neighboring countries. It compares the artistic work and the historical facts，and aims to show that not a small part of this work originated from historical memories and the empire’s imagination even though the other parts might have been in keeping with the truth. The study proves that the Song dynasty still indulged itself in the dream of an overwhelming empire despite the fact it did not possess the thriving power of the Han and Tang dynasties. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Fearing Climate-Fictions: Emotions\, Persuasion\, and the Aesthetic Appreciation of Cli-Fi" by Dr. Marta Benenti\, University of Murcia\, Spain
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99087478661 \nPassword: 910261 \n  \nAbstract \nMost literary and cinematographic narratives about climate change depict catastrophic scenarios which have a tragic impact on the stories’ characters and frequently lead to hopeless endings (Trexler 2015). Owing much to dystopian literature\, such cultural products as Cli-fi (or climate fictions) present their audiences with scary\, shocking\, or threatening images of more or less near futures (Benenti & Giombini 2023). As a consequence\, narrative engagement with these works is often accompanied by feelings of discomfort\, anxiety\, and fear. While these emotional states can be thought to contribute to Cli-fi’s capacity to raise recipients’ awareness concerning the environmental crisis\, empirical evidence suggests that negative emotions impair rather than foster climate-friendly behaviours (O’Neill & Nicholson-Cole 2009). In this talk\, I (i) review the psychological literature concerning the effects of negative emotions elicited by narratives on action dispositions; (ii) introduce the hypothesis that catastrophic narratives are less likely than more positive accounts of climate change to motivate people’s engagement; (iii) suggest that the aesthetic appreciation of Cli-fi works – rather than the positive or negative valence of the emotions aroused – is crucial in determining readers’ and watchers’ disposition to actively counter climate change. \n  \nBio \nMarta Benenti received her PhD in philosophy at the University of Turin. She’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Murcia\, where she carries out the project LEAP – Learning to Appreciate Aesthetic Values. Previously\, she held research positions at the Italian Academy (New York)\, the University of Turin\, and the San Raffaele University (Milan)\, and teaching positions at the Politecnico of Turin. From 2021 to 2023 she was postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Eastern Piedmont where she taught aesthetics and philosophy of mind\, while working on a project on the persuasive power of fictional narratives about climate change. She has published on the topics of expressiveness\, emotions\, the aesthetics of tourism\, fiction\, and the perception of aesthetic values.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Professors and Students\, \nWe are most pleased to invite all to attend the following Seminar by  Professor Xosé Luís Regueira Fernández\, Full Professor from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela on “The Galician language: problems and paradoxes of a minorized language in the periphery of Europe”\, Monday\, 02/09/2024\, at 3:00pm in room E21b-G015. \n  \nBIO \nXosé Luís Regueira Fernández (Vilalba\, 1958) is professor of Galician and Portuguese Philology. He graduated in Romance Philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1982\, and obtained a doctorate at the same university in 1989. He has formed part of ILG since 1981. He is the Institute’s director since 2018. \nHis research interests focus on phonetics and variation in the spoken language. He has taken part in several research projects in these fields\, in several of them as chief researcher. \nHe is the secretary of the journal Cadernos de Lingua\, edited by the Real Academia Galega\, and he is part of the scientific committee of several magazines of this specialty. \nHe has been a permanent member of the Real Academia Galega since 2012. \nSource: https://ilg.usc.gal/en/persoal/xose-luis-regueira-fernandez \n  \nABSTRACT \nThe Galician language: problems and paradoxes of a minorized language in the periphery of Europe \nGalician\, the Romance language spoken in Galicia and in some bordering areas of Asturias and León\, in northwestern Spain\, is linguistically very close to Portuguese\, with which it shares its origin. It is currently a minorized language\, due to a historical process of imposition of Spanish during the Modern and Contemporary Ages\, until a process of recovery began in the 19th century. It is currently an official language\, together with Spanish\, has an important literary and cultural development and continues to be the usual language of the majority of the population of Galicia\, although it continues to lose speakers due to the breakdown of the transmission of the language in families. \nIn this presentation\, after a brief historical review to contextualize the Galician language and society\, we will describe the current situation and some of the main problems it faces in order to remain a fully functional language in the 21st century. \nIN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Seminar: Becoming a Transnational and Situated Junior Scholar:  Tips on Publications and Career Building
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nChinese scholars and students often find it difficult to break into Anglophone academia as the academic habits and writing styles can be vastly different from the paradigms they are used to. Similarly\, scholars trained in Anglophone academia may find it difficult to navigate the academic job market in mainland China. Based on my own experience of publishing in English journals and working in different universities in the UK and China\, I will share some tips on effective career building that would allow humanities scholars to flourish in particular local contexts and keep their transnational connections and international relevance. This sharing session will start with a summary of the major differences in modes of thinking and writing in Chinese and English and then introduce three different methods of identifying valuable and viable research projects\, focusing on theme-driven\, phenomenon-driven\, and debate-driven interventions. Using my own publications and talks as examples\, I will also share tips on engaging with academic journals and publishers\, and how to navigate the post-PhD job hunting period as a junior scholar. \nBiography: \nFlair Donglai SHI is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature based at the School of Humanities\, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He holds a PhD in English from Oxford University and works as Associate Tutor in Translation Studies at Warwick University. His research areas include world literature theory\, race and postcolonial studies\, Sinophone Studies\, and China-Africa cultural relations. He has published an edited book\, World Literature in Motion\, and many articles in international journals like Critical Comparative Studies\, Translation & Literature\, and Comparative Literature Studies\, and on media platforms like Sixth Tone and Journal of Literature. He is currently working on his monograph entitled Yellow Peril Revisited while furthering his research on the interracial politics represented in contemporary China-Africa cultural products.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95244216235 \nPassword: 409082 \n  \nAbstract \n“Ode on a Grecian Urn” is an attractive site for mixing John Keats\, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel\, and Karl Marx because Hegel and Marx were both philhellenes. In Hegel and Marx\, the concepts of truth and beauty intertwine with the concept of freedom. Dialectical aesthetics defines beauty in terms of truth and defines art’s truth in terms of freedom. This article’s Hegelian interpretation is oriented around subjectivity and transcendence of freedom. Its Marxian interpretation is oriented around historicity and the immanence of freedom. The “negative capability” of the ode abolishes and uplifts the best of Hegelian and Marxian interpretation in aesthetic wonder with mystery. \n  \nBio \nDr. James Chambers teaches philosophy at Hebei University. His area of research is the philosophy of Hegel\, Marx\, and Laozi and interdisciplinary studies of philosophy\, literature and history. His recent publications include the book Marx and Laozi: A Dialectical Synthesis (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2023)\, and articles; “Dialectics of Freedom in “Ode on a Grecian Urn”: Keats\, Hegel\, Marx” (Clio: A Journal of Literature\, History\, and the Philosophy of History\, 2023)\, “Hegel’s Metaphilosophy of Idealism” (Metaphilosophy\, 2021)\, “Didactic Mimesis in Wordsworth’s ‘Simon Lee’” (Style\, 2020; co-authored with Sun Shuting)\, and “Against Methodological Individualist Interpretation of Marxist Explanations of Social Phenomena” (International Critical Thought\, 2018; co-authored with Cheng Zhihua). James is currently completing the first draft of a historical novel\, writing an article on Hegel’s epistemology on the question of the relationship between representations and concepts\, and working with East China Normal University Press Ltd. on a Chinese translation of his book.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: No to “Yellow Peril”\, No to “Honorary Whites”: Race and Diaspora in Chinese South African Life Writing
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nBased on one of the central chapters of my book manuscript Yellow Peril Revisited: Mutations\, Reactions\, and Reinventions\, this talk focuses on the experiences of the Chinese South African communities during apartheid presented in locally published memoirs. Situating these experiences in the long history of Chinese migration and localization in South Africa dating back to at least the mid-19th century\, it organizes them into three analytical categories: everyday encounters of institutional racism\, preservation of Chineseness\, and associations with other non-white groups. \nI argue that contrary to the political and psychological struggles of postcolonial trauma that often characterize post-apartheid South African literature\, Chinese South African life writing exhibits a kind of pragmatism\, with which the material and emotional effects of institutional and casual racism have been constantly negotiated. This pragmatism not only demonstrates the agency of the diasporic Chinese vis-à-vis the overarching white supremacist sociopolitical structure but also reveals the communities’ complicity with the anti-black governmentality at the core of the racist governance of South African society for most of the 20th century. \nAs such\, I note that yellowness in the special context of apartheid was constructed in relation to multiple racial Others\, including the oppressive “white”\, the disenfranchised “black”\, Japanese who were granted certain privileges as “Honorary Whites”\, as well as “the new Yellow Peril” of recent immigrants from mainland China. Ultimately\, these initial attempts at making a Chinese South African literary history also offer alternative lens of seeing “Africanity”\, which\, like yellowness and Chineseness\, is both transnational and situated and open to interpretations beyond straightforward racial\, linguistic\, and national identifications. \nBiography: \nFlair Donglai SHI is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature based at the School of Humanities\, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He has published an edited book\, World Literature in Motion\, and many articles in international journals like Critical Comparative Studies\, Translation & Literature\, and Comparative Literature Studies\, and on media platforms like Sixth Tone and Journal of Literature. He is currently working on his monograph entitled Yellow Peril Revisited while furthering his research on the interracial politics represented in contemporary China-Africa cultural products.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: "Resistance to Biologism since Malthus: An ethics of responsibility"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper considers ways in which thinkers and writers of the nineteenth century encountered imperialism and challenged biologism\, the practice of attributing biological cause to that which is explicable either wholly or in part by environment. It explores early challenges to biologism as expressed in the oppression of women and in groundless and unjustifiable hierarchies of race. I begin with the Brontë sisters’ implicit interrogation both of imperialism and exploitation through the extraction of and trading in natural resources\, and consider key historical and literary moments of resistance to biologistic thought from Charles Darwin and J. S. Mill to Thomas Hardy\, Mona Caird\, and Siegfried Sassoon. \nBiography: \nAngelique Richardson is Professor of English and a historian of science at the University of Exeter\, where she leads the Hardy’s Global Correspondents Project. Her books and special editions include Love and Eugenics in the Late 19th Century\, After Darwin: Animals\, Emotions and the Mind\, Women Who Did: Stories by Men and Women\, 1890-1914\, and Hardy: Diverse Audiences.  She works on the history of racism and nineteenth-century British opposition to imperialism and biologism – the misattribution to nature or biology of that which is social. She is on the editorial board of the Hardy Society journals and 19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century\, and is associate editor-in-chief of the Forum for World Literature Studies (Shanghai Normal University\, Purdue University\, and the Wuhan Institute for Humanities\, co-edited by Professor Huang Tiechi of Shanghai Normal University\, Professor Nie Zhenzhao of Central China Normal University\, and Professor Charles Ross of Purdue University)\, contributing editor to Critical Quarterly\, and literary editor of the Proceedings of Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society. She also volunteers for Firefly International\, an NGO which supports children affected by war. In 2019 she was a Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: "“Democracy? We Deliver”: Race\, Morale\, and Total War in the Pacific""
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIn November 1945\, the United States Strategic Bombing Survey (USSBS) set out in jeeps across Hiroshima to find eyewitnesses who could tell them about their experience of the atomic bomb. This surreal scene of dropping a weapon of mass destruction on a city\, and then going about with clipboards asking residents how they felt about it\, encapsulated the many contradictions and ironies inherent at the American way of war.  The importance of the moment\, however\, goes beyond the American context. The encounter in Hiroshima was the result of a convergence of several historical trajectories and developments that were shared across all WW II belligerents. The USSBS was the result of the increased scientification of strategic bombing and the methods used to evaluate it. Central to this drive was the notion of “morale” and the transnational idea that the goal of bombing civilians was to break their “will” to fight. During the bombing campaign “’the target\,’ as one air commander put it\, ‘had become the Japanese mind.’” Furthermore\, Morale surveys\, I argue\, set the stage for later encounter by the psychological professions with the A-bomb. The interviews were done by trained psychiatrists\, psychologists\, and other social scientists\, and were\, in fact\, the first hibakusha (A-bomb survivor) testimonies collected in Hiroshima. This encounter further connected to studies done on Japanese-American internees\, American occupation reforms\, and the rise of psychological science as a pillar of Cold War struggles over hearts and minds\, making it a pivotal moment in early Cold War history. \nBiography: \nRan Zwigenberg’s research focuses on modern Japanese and European history\, with a specialization in memory and intellectual history. He has taught and lectured in the United States\, Europe\, Israel\, and Japan\, and published on issues of war memory\, heritage\, atomic energy\, psychiatry\, and survivor politics.  Zwigenberg’s first book\, Hiroshima: The Origins of Global Memory Culture (Cambridge University Press\, 2014)\, was the winner of the 2016 Association for Asian Studies’ John W. Hall book award. His second\, co-authored book\, Japan’s Castles: Citadels of Modernity in War and Peace\, came out with Cambridge University Press in 2019. Nuclear Minds: Cold War Psychological Science and the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was published by Chicago University Press in 2023.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: "Language\, identity\, and language policy in Timor-Leste"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe legacy of Portuguese colonialism is evident in modern-day Timor-Leste\, and frequently discussed in terms of language policy. When Timor-Leste became independent in 2002 one of the decisions that needed to be made involved languages. In addition to many indigenous languages\, three foreign languages also had to be considered – Bahasa Indonesia\, Portuguese\, and English. In this talk I will begin by describing the Timorese linguistic ecology and explaining the decisions made around languages in the new constitution. However\, official language policy is not always reflected in language use. In order to gauge the effectiveness of language policy in Timor-Leste I will then draw on two studies of the same linguistic landscape in Dili\, the capital city. Conducted more than a decade apart\, the data from these studies allows insights into the implementation of the language policy\, language practices\, and expressions of national identity over time. \nBiography: \nJohn Macalister is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington\, New Zealand. His teaching and research have spanned the breadth of the field\, from language learning & teaching to language policy & linguistic landscapes. He co-edited Multilingual Memories: Monuments\, museums and the linguistic landscape (Bloomsbury) with Professor Robert Blackwood. He is a former President of Applied Linguistics in Aotearoa New Zealand (ALANZ) and is the New Zealand English consultant for the Oxford English Dictionary.

A roda\, os instrumentos musicais\, o canto e os movimentos corporais compõem a performance em capoeira. \nAxé Macau foi a primeira academia de capoeira criada na região. O seu principal propósito é promover o conhecimento da história\, música\, arte e cultura do Brasil através de aulas educativas e interactivas. \n  \nCASA DE PORTUGAL EM MACAU \nAssociação que congrega os residentes em Macau de nacionalidade portuguesa e os amigos interessados na cultura portuguesa de qualquer nacionalidade.
