SUMMARY:The Enemy-radio Listeners: Technology and Agency in Socialist China
DESCRIPTION:Socialist China was usually understood as a totalized society with strict control over the flow of information. In this talk\, Dr. Wang Yu complicates the above understanding by exploring the popular practice of listening to foreign radio stations in the 1950s and 1960s China. He will bring into light this largely unknown group of radio users and answer the following questions: who were they\, when\, how\, and why did they listen\, and more importantly\, how did they interact with the state as they process the information from the political power beyond state-borders? Wang suggests that the state’s failure to control the flow of information not only had to do with its technological limits but also was closely related to a few other geopolitical and social issues. This talk also invites the audience to rethink the limit of the state in the age of technological innovation and globalization. \n

SUMMARY:Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: Macao Humanities Forum#2 by Professor Gongkai PAN
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is going to organize the 2nd Macao Humanities Forum on 15 April 2021 (Thursday). The forum will provide a platform for world-renowned scholars of different research fields to share their research with us. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \nIn this forum\, we are honored to have Professor Gongkai PAN to deliver a lecture on the topic “The pursuit of cross-border humanistic ideals – my art and life” \n  \nDetails of the forum are as follows: \nDate:               15 April 2021 (Thursday) \nTime:               5:00 pm – 6:30 pm \nVenue:             E34-G011 (Lecture Hall\, Cultural Building) \nLanguage:       Mandarin (Simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided) \n  \nTitle: The pursuit of cross-border humanistic ideals – my art and life \nAbstract: A piece of ink painting\, an idea of philosophical thinking\, a conceptual artwork\, an architectural design\, the management and development of a university – all of them are grasps of different forms of “bounded domains”. Although they are different in nature and size\, these differences seem to be irrelevant. In fact\, they have inherent commonality. Behind these different works of art in my life\, there is a continuing yearning and pursuit for the future humanistic ideals and humanistic spirit. \n  \nPlease register for the forum on or before 14 April 2021 via  https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5vRdpSi4rxE44gm \nKindly refer to the below poster for more information.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: ‘Poems for Macau’ - Talking to Cecília Jorge
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to announce its upcoming event – a talk given by Dr. Cecília Jorge on her most recent publication\, a book of poems entitled ‘Poemas para Macau’ (Poems for Macau). During this session held at the Faculty of Arts (University of Macau) and simultaneously online\, the author will share with the audience the guiding lines and themes behind her poems that reflect memories of Macau of bygone and current times. \nAre such memories and thoughts merely her own views and feelings\, or do they overlap with those of the Macanese community as a whole? What place does her recent poetic work hold within the literary production of Macau and of diasporic Portuguese language poetry in general? This and other related topics will be covered and discussed in this event. \nThe talk and Q&A session is open to all those interested\, both in loco as well as via the webinar session on ZOOM. \n \nShort Bio of the invited author: \nCecília Jorge is a journalist\, author and researcher on the Macanese community and culture since the late 1970s. She was born in Macau\, where her family has roots going back 400 years\, and pursued her university studies in Portugal\, having graduated in Germanic Philology from the University of Lisbon. \nShe began her journalistic career in Lisbon and worked in that field from 1973 until 1990. After returning to Macau\, Cecília Jorge continued her carreer in journalism as correspondent for ANOP\, and later worked at DSTCS\, GCS\, Cultural Institute and at the Department for Chinese Affaires. In 1990\, together with Rogério Beltrão Coelho she co-founded the publisher Livros do Oriente\, Lda. \nShe has dedicated most of her research to the study and diffusion of the cultural identity of the Macanese\, to Macau as the birth place of this community\, and to the overseas Macanese communities. She is the author of several books as well as journal and newspaper articles\, and has participated in seminars\, conferences and discussions\, as well as in television and radio documentaries. Currently she is consultant for Santa Casa da Misericórida de Macau. \nZOOM LINK \n \nCIELA WEBSITE

SUMMARY:The May Fourth Movement in the American Media: A New Perspective of China's Radical Era
DESCRIPTION:After the outbreak of the May Fourth Movement\, the American media carried out continuous reports\, providing a Western perspective on understanding the movement and important historical records of the US attitude towards the May Fourth Movement at that time. These reports not only revealed the process of this movement in detail but also\, particularly important\, they foresaw China ushering in a new era. As the American media and Americans in China clearly expressed their support for China on the Shandong issue\, Japan began to spread rumors that the movement was directed by the United States behind the scenes\, trying to transfer the responsibility for the anger of the Chinese people caused by its aggressive actions to the Americans. The root cause of the contradiction between the United States and Japan was that the United States wanted to stop Japan’s hegemony in China in order to facilitate the implementation of the open door policy in the Far East. Therefore\, it had a very sharp contradiction with Japan’s ambition to seize Chinese territory. \nRegister now:

SUMMARY:The Spatial Distribution of Chinese Manufacturing Industry in 1933: and A Discussion on the Spatial Process of Late-Developing Countries’ Modernization 1933年中國製造業區域布局研究—兼論後發大國工業化的空間進程
DESCRIPTION:A database based on A Survey Report of Chinese Industry by Liu Dajun and other statistics in 1930s has been constructed as the main source for this research. This database reveals that the geographic industrial distribution of China in 1933 demonstrated a trend “contiguous distribution in the east\, scattered distribution in the west”. This trend was caused by the distinguishes of the eastern and western region in natural resources\, transportation conditions and connections with external markets. Without support form a powerful state\, the industrialization of modern China faced many obstacles\, such as the shortage of market\, spatial gap between the eastern region and the western region\, vicious competition among different regions and the mismatch of natural resources and investment and professional human resources.

SUMMARY:Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series - "Coming to Terms with Zhū Xī’s Profoundly Influential Heritage: How [Well] did 19th and 20th Century Christian Intellectuals Engage Zhū Xī’s Corpus?" by Prof. Lauren F. Pfister\, Hong Kong Baptist University
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/92984147450 \n  \nAbstract \nDuring his lifetime the Sòng dynasty Rú scholar\, Zhū Xī 朱熹 (1130-1200)\, never encountered any person who was associated with Christian traditions. Nevertheless\, the immense cultural and intellectual influences of his school of Principle-centered Learning (Lǐxué理學) became a dominant force in the development of Ruist (“Confucian”) traditions in later dynasties.  During the Qīng empire (1645-1911) Zhū Xī’s interpretations of The Four Books (Sìshū 《四書》) – texts that he created in the 1170s in ways that were innovative and controversial – became the imperially authorized interpretive standards for Ruist education.  With that unusual affirmation of the value of some of his extensive corpus\, studies in Zhū Xī’s works became central to the development of Qīng imperial ideology and the alternative Ruist traditions that developed particularly in both the Míng and Qīng dynasties and then subsequently in the post-traditional settings of Republican China and Communist China during the 20th century. \nHow well did Christian Intellectuals handle the complex and massive corpus of Zhū Xī’s intellectual heritage in the 19th and 20th centuries?  I will explain how pre-19th century figures did not really comprehend Zhū Xī’s claims\, but starting in the early 19th century\, some new and critically informed studies began to appear in Russian\, and later in English\, French and Latin.  Among these were important interpretive efforts inherent in the Ruist canonical translation projects produced by missionary-scholars that deserve special notice:  those produced by Nikita Y. Bichurin 比丘林 (1777-1852)\, James Legge    理雅各 (1815-1897) and Séraphin Couvruer  顧賽芬 (1835– 1919).  There were also some studies produced in the 19th century by notable Christian intellectuals that were problematic and sometimes incoherent\, which will be only briefly introduced.  Nevertheless\, in the 20th century a number of major translation and interpretation efforts of various parts of Zhū Xī’s corpus by Christian intellectuals – including those who vehemently opposed Zhū Xī’s worldview and values – were produced in Chinese\, English\, French\, German\, and Portuguese.  An overview of those 20th century studies\, with some indication of the nature and claims of the most influential interpretations\, will be offered for consideration\, assessment\, and debate.

SUMMARY:Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: Macao Humanities Forum#3 by Professor Xiangchen SUN
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is going to organize the 3rd Macao Humanities Forum on 6 May 2021 (Thursday). The forum will provide a platform for world-renowned scholars of different research fields to share their research with us. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \nIn this forum\, we are honored to have Professor Xiangchen SUN to deliver a lecture on the topic “Back to the Family — from a philosophical perspective (何以歸家-一種哲學的視角)”. Professor SUN is Dean of the School of Philosophy at Fudan University\, Shanghai. He received his BA\, MA and Ph.D. degrees at Fudan University. He has been visiting scholar/visiting professor at world-class universities such as Yale University\, University of Chicago\, École normale supérieure Paris and Freie Universität Berlin.  He has been selected into various prestigious talents programmes\, including the National Cultural Master and “Four Groups of Talents Project” (2019)\, Shanghai Leading Talents (2019)\, and Cross-Century Talents of the Ministry of Education (2009). He has also won numerous prizes as a well-regarded researcher\, including the Second Prize and Third Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Book Category and the Second Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Article Category at the Shanghai Municipal Philosophy and Social Sciences Award. \n  \nDetails of the forum are as follows: \nDate:               6 May 2021 (Thursday) \nTime:               4:00 pm – 5:30 pm \nVenue:             E21-G035 (FAH Lecture Hall) \nLanguage:       Mandarin (Simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided) \n  \nTitle: Back to the Family — from a philosophical perspective \nAbstract:When talking about 家jia (family/home)\, Chinese people often have a special cordial feeling\, but they have also criticized fiercely the culture of jia since the May 4th New Culture Movement. In modern Chinese philosophy\, on the one hand\, there is not enough space to examine the issue of jia positively. On the other hand\, there is an obvious “deficiency” in the western modern “individual-subjective” philosophy. That is the reason why we see a lot of discussions of the “Other” in contemporary western philosophy. The philosophy of the “Other” still has its shortcomings. The traditional Chinese idea of 親親 qinqin (relations) may provide some solutions to the problem. In other words\, this philosophy of 歸家 guijia (homecoming) may open some new possibilities in building a “warmer” life-world in the future. \nPlease register for the forum on or before 6 May 2021 via https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6g3TeDIzF4jM8ZM \nKindly refer to the below poster for more information.

SUMMARY:The Floating People and the Stationary Order: The Formation of Traditional Social and Spatial Structure in the Greater Bay Area
\n  \nThe Floating People and the Stationary Order: The Formation of Traditional Social and Spatial Structure in the Greater Bay Area \nDuring ancient time\, most part of the area what now we call “the Greater Bay Area” were still under the sea. There were just many islands in this bay. Many people based on boats or islands lived in this big bay. After the Song dynasty\, many lands brought by sedimentary sand (sand-lands) emerged around those islands. With the expansion of those new lands\, many people living on boats became settled farmers. After the Ming dynasty\, the political order in this area was constructed by the state. Relying on the state power\, those settled farmers monopoly on the exploitation of the new emerging sand-lands. A dichotomy of farmlands and sand-lands became fixed. The distinguishment of the social hierarchy between the great clans living on farmlands and the Tanka people living on sand-lands emerged. \n

SUMMARY:Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the University of Macau: FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Harmony\, Domination\, and Freedom" by Prof. Chenyang Li\, Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95990453576 \nAbstract: \nMuch of the pre-Qin Chinese philosophy during the Spring-Autumn and Warring States period can be understood in the light of issues related to harmony as a solution to a chaotic world. Harmony takes place mainly in two forms\, active and passive harmony. Active harmony is a state or process in which involved parties dynamically engage one another in a constructive way while maintaining a good level of equity. Passive harmony is merely the absence of discord or conflict\, without active engagement. Disharmony is characterized by confrontation\, conflict\, and chaos. Domination exists with order\, even though with an oppressive one. Domination may be disguised as\, but must be distinguished from\, harmony. While clarifying these concepts\, I will also discuss their relation to freedom.
