SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: TRIBUTES TO JOSÉ SARAMAGO ON HIS CENTENNIAL BIRTH ANNIVERSARY - 'The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis' as a paradigm of Saramagian Invention
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “TRIBUTES TO JOSÉ SARAMAGO ON HIS CENTENNIAL BIRTH ANNIVERSARY – The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis’ as a paradigm of Saramagian Invention” by Professor Helena Buscu (University of Lisbon) \, being held on March 21\, 23 and 24\, 2022\, from 7:15pm to 9:15pm\, via Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95471270325 \nPlease register HERE for the event. \nTRIBUTES TO JOSÉ SARAMAGO ON HIS CENTENNIAL BIRTH ANNIVERSARY \nJosé Saramago (1922-2010)\, Portugal’s Nobel Literature Laureate (1988)\, is not only a distinguished author within the Portuguese literary sphere\, but has long become part of the group of  the most significant and read authors who shaped 20th century world literature. This year his centennial birth anniversary is being celebrated worldwide by many academic and non-academic institutions. The Department of Portuguese at FAH/UM\, through its Research Centre\, CIELA\, will also commemorate this occasion with two open online tributes. \n1st  Tribute \nOpen Online Seminar \nIntroduction to Saramago’s Work \n This 3 session seminar will provide and introduction to Saramago’s main lines of thought and creativity developed throughout his vast literary production\, through the presentation\, comments and analysis of two of his works: O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis (‘The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis’) and Viagem a Portugal (‘Voyage to Portugal’). It proposes these two works as bearing the pillars of Saramago’s literary creation transversal to the author’s remaining production. \nThe seminar will be given by Prof. Helena Buescu (University of Lisbon\, Portugal)\, and held  Portuguese. The main target audience is advanced Graduate and Postgraduate students pursuing or interested in Portuguese language literary studies. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Time without Events of time” by Prof. Gregory Landini\, University of Iowa\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94985864920 \nAbstract \nTime\, it might be said\,  is concerned with the nature of the past\, the present and the future\, with variants of  presentism and eternalism and (non-static) growing block the leading metaphysical theories.  But this is hardly clarifying.  Presentism is often characterized as the thesis that only the present exists\, while the others embrace more. If the positions and the distinctiveness of presentism should turn on the dubious assumption of a property of ‘existing’ (present tense) or ‘being present’\, then the substantive nature of the debates may well deserve to be viewed as dubious.  Another questionable assumption\, I argue\, is that temporal relations and our understanding of tense requires a commitment to events (at least as concrete if not abstract particulars). The tenseless predication required for the characterization of events generates the static image of  events standing (tenselessly) in an external relation of temporal order—an order that seems able to be modeled by applying mathematical kinds of ordering.  The success of Einstein’s special relativity\, interpreted as if it requires a theory of space-time events\, has led many philosophers to accept the static image. These are fly bottles.  To plan an escape\, I introduce in contradistinction to a modest event language Le\,  a safe mode language Lt wherein tenselessness comes solely from the use of quantifiers (and accompanying connectives) and all primitive predicates get tense inflections.  It is argued that substantive differences in theories of time can be captured within Lt and that embracing events is not required for understanding tense inflections. It is hoped that\, without events and the static image they bring\, a new interpretation of special relativity as a non-static theory may be  developed.  This interpretation has the striking consequence that the implications of special relativity have been misconstrued.  A clock runs slow relative to an inertial frame in such a way that its hands always stay in lock-step with another running at a different rate relative to a frame.   It will be found\, however\, that this is of no consolation to presentism.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “The Snail and its Horns: Practical Philosophy Inspired by the Zhuangzi” by Prof. Carine Defoort\, University of Leuven\, Belgium
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94306339056 \nAbstract \nIn the last century\, Western jargon and methodologies have overwhelmed the study of early Chinese texts. In an attempt to somewhat redress the balance\, this paper retrieves a core notion from the Zhuangzi\, “disputation” or “distinctions” (bian)\, to reflect upon a contemporary Western debate\, namely about the exclusion of non-Western sources at philosophy departments. The detailed analysis of one anecdote about two states fighting each other on the horns of a snail leads to a view on disputation and its limits. By applying these insights to the “legitimacy of Chinese philosophy” debate\, the Zhuangzi can inspire insights and attitudes that tend to be overlooked.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: TRIBUTES TO JOSÉ SARAMAGO ON HIS CENTENNIAL BIRTH ANNIVERSARY - SARAMAGO IN CHINESE AND IN JAPANESE: TALKING TO THE TRANSLATORS
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “TRIBUTES TO JOSÉ SARAMAGO ON HIS CENTENNIAL BIRTH ANNIVERSARY – SARAMAGO IN CHINESE AND IN JAPANESE: TALKING TO THE TRANSLATORS” by Dr. Kinoshita Maho  (Portuguese Cultural Centre\, Embassy of Portugal\, Tokyo) and Prof. Wang Yuan   (Peking University)\, being held on April 07\, 2022\, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm\, via Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/95339592093 \nABSTRACT \nThis is the second event organized by the Department of Portuguese & CIELA to mark the worldwide commemorations of the Portuguese Nobel Literature Laureate\, following an online seminar held on April 21\,22 & 24.  This webinar will focus on the experience of translating Saramago into East Asian Languages\, specifically to Chinese and Japanese. In this webinar\, one of his translators to Chinese\, Prof. Wang Yuan\, and to Japanese\, Dr. Kinoshita Maho\, will share their personal experiences in translating this author to these respective languages. Saramago is well known for his very particular use of punctuation as well as resorting to many historic references specific to Portugal but many times unknown to the foreign reader. How these two and other challenges that arise from his works can be tackled and possibly resolved for the Chinese and the Japanese readers is what the two invited translators will share with the audience. The focus will specifically be on the novels ‘Journey of the Elephant’ and ‘All the Names’. A general perspective of Saramago’s translations in China and Japan\, as well as the author’s receptivity in both countries will also be discussed. \nFollowing their presentations the session will be open to further discussion on the topics covered in an informal exchange between the invited speakers\, the moderators and the online audience. \nCIELA wishes to thank the José Saramago Foundation\, the Cultural Section of the Portuguese Embassy in Beijing and the Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre\,  at the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo for their assistance in contacting the translators.

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: Digital Poetry in the Portuguese Speaking Countries
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the open online guest lecture “Digital Poetry in the Portuguese Speaking Countries” by Brazilian scholar Professor Jorge Luiz Antonio\, being held on April 11\, 2022\, from 8:00pm to 9:00pm (Macao time)\, via Zoom https://umac.zoom.us/j/8312593315 \nABSTRACT \nThere are many ways of making poetry nowadays\, but the one that mostly engages the new technologies of language is digital poetry. In  Poesia digital: teoria\, história\, antologias (Digital Poetry: Theory\, History\, Anthologies)\, Jorge Luiz Antonio presents a panorama of digital poetry history\, from its origins\, in 1959\, until our days with the most advanced and creative innovations. The author shows how the resources of computer science\, apparently cool and exact\, can give new life to the universe of poetry when taking their producers and appreciators to the other artistic directions inside digital culture. For Jorge Luiz Antonio his Digital Poetry: Theory\, History\, Anthologies is a book that “studies a type of contemporary poetry in its relationship with the arts\, design and computational technology\, which is a continuation and an unfolding of avant-garde\, concrete\, visual\, and experimental poetry”. \nIn this open online guest lecture\, the invited speaker will share with the audience his profound knowledge of the subject matter\, based on his extensive research and publications\, with a special focus on digital poetry production in the Portuguese Speaking countries .

SUMMARY:FAH-DPORT-CIELA: WORLD VARIETIES OF PORTUGUESE AND PORTUGUESE-BASED CONTACT LANGUAGES - MOZAMBIQUE\, ANGOLA\, SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE\, AND GUINEA-BISSAU
DESCRIPTION:The Research Centre for Luso-Asian Studies (CIELA) is pleased to invite all those interested to the Webinar “WORLD VARIETIES OF PORTUGUESE AND PORTUGUESE-BASED CONTACT LANGUAGES – MOZAMBIQUE\, ANGOLA\, SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE\, AND GUINEA-BISSAU” by Prof. TJERK HAGEMEIJER (CLUL – Un. of Lisbon)\, Dr. RITA GONÇALVES (CLUL – Un. of Lisbon) and Dr. CHIARA TRUPPI (CLUL – Un. of Lisbon)\, being held on April 19\, 2022\, from 8:00pm to 9:30pm\, via Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/8312593315 \nREGISTRATION (Optional) AND FULL ABSTRACTS LINK: https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6xSUbHIsywvzwCq \nThis open online session will consist of three guest lectures\, and is the 4th  of the CIELA open guest talk series World Varieties of Portuguese  and Portuguese-based Contact Languages\, successfully initiated in December 2021. This series aims to contribute to the diffusion of current research in the field\, from non-vernacular varieties to creole languages\, to emerging national varieties and L2 learner varieties. Each session will focus on specific regional or national linguistic contexts. In this session the focus will be on Portuguese varieties Mozambique\, Angola\, São Tomé and Príncipe\, and Guinea-Bissau Kriol. \nProfessor Tjerk Hagemeijer will briefly summarise the current linguistic situation of Portuguese in Angola\, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe\, emphasising\, in particular\, the historical process of acquisition and nativization of this language in contexts of contact with typologically distinct languages from the Bantu and Creole groups. The second and main objective of his talk consists in the presentation of a case study on the expression of the argument with the Target theme of verbs of movement in the urban varieties of these three countries. \nDr. Rita Gonçalves will focus on the syntax of Portuguese spoken in Maputo/Mozambique\, Luanda/Angola and São Tomé/São Tomé and Príncipe varieties in process of nativization and historically in contact with Bantu and Portuguese lexified Creole languages\, respectively\, Changana\, Kimbundu and Forro. She will present a case study on the expression of the direct object and the indirect object and will discuss linguistic factors such as animacy and pronominalization\, as well as the inter and intraspeaker variation. \nDr. Chiara Truppi will provide a brief introduction to the Portuguese creole spoken in Guinea-Bissau (Kriol or Guinean) with regard to its general synchronic and diachronic features. Kriol belongs to the group of Upper Guinea creoles which\, together with Cape Verdean and Casamanse\, constitutes the phylogenetic group of Portuguese creoles of Upper Guinea. It has been proposed that Papiamentu\, a (mainly) Spanish-based Caribbean creole\, is also grouped with the Upper Guinean creoles\, with which it may share its origins (Quint 2000\, among others). In view of this\,  her talk will  also focus on the question of  Kriol’s substrate and adstrate languages\, assessing the weight of these languages in its grammar.
