DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/99485044779 \nPassword: 455548 \n  \nAbstract \nBeginning with music\, through the emergence of lyric poetry\, and culminating in the literati brush-and-ink landscapes of the Southern Song\, something happened\, something Kao Yu-kung calls Chinese lyric aesthetic. What is at issue for us here is the nature and character of this happening. I begin with a characterization of the fundamental orientation of Chinese thinkers (as contrasted with that of Indo-European thinkers)\, then turn briefly to the thought of Confucius and of Zhuangzi to expose the intellectual and existential roots of the lyric tradition. The lyric tradition itself is explicated as a working out of the Zhuangzian ideal of resonating\, mirroring things as they are. Since our conception of Chinese lyric aesthetic can seem surprising\, somehow unanticipated\, the discussion concludes with an account of why this conception has for so long gone unremarked\, an account that brings us full circle\, back to the fundamental orientation of Chinese thinkers with which we began. \n  \nBio \nDanielle Macbeth is T. Wistar Brown Professor of Philosophy at Haverford College in Pennsylvania\, USA. She is the author of Frege’s Logic (Harvard UP\, 2005) and Realizing Reason: A Narrative of Truth and Knowing (Oxford UP\, 2014)\, as well as many essays in\, for example\, the philosophy of language\, the philosophy of mind\, and the history and philosophy of mathematics. She was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) in Palo Alto in 2002-3 and has been awarded both an American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Burkhardt Fellowship and a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The world in its original state is the world as it is of itself. It is only when humans function in the world in their various ways that the questions of understanding and shaping the world arise. The processes of people functioning in the world are also the processes of the unfolding of “affairs” (shi). Affairs (shi) are primarily interrelated with actual human activity. According to Chinese philosophy\, “affairs are action” and “all affairs in the world arise from conduct.” “Affairs” also refers to the outcomes of people’s conduct and action. An outlook that sees the world in terms of affairs seeks to understand and shape the world on the basis of actual human activity and its outcomes. \n  \nBio \nYang Guorong is a senior professor at East China Normal University\, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences\, director of the China Modern Thought and Culture Research Institute at the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education\, and director of the academic committee of the university. He is also the Dean of Ma Yifu Academy at Zhejiang University\, Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education\, and a member of the 5th and 6th Philosophy Discipline Evaluation Groups of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. His main research areas include Chinese philosophy\, comparative philosophy between China and the West\, ethics\, metaphysics\, etc. He has published more than 20 academic works\, and various works have been translated into English and Korean. He has been published in Indian University Press\, Brill\, and others. His academic part-time positions include the President of the International Metaphysics Society (ISM)\, Academician of the International School of Philosophy (IIP)\, Former President of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) (2019-2022)\, President of the Chinese Philosophical History Society\, etc.

SUMMARY:FAH-DENG Guest Lecture: ‘Telling Stories with Large Corpora: New Approaches to Language Change and Variation'
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe humanities tell the stories of our shared human experience\, strengthen communities\, and help bridge divides.  -Ohio Humanities Council \nHumanities focuses on understanding meaning\, purpose\, and goals and furthers the appreciation of singular historical and social phenomena.   – Wilhelm Dilthey on ‘Human Sciences’ \n  \nThis talk focuses on how we can turn the multitude of data points (e.g.\, big data) into the story of the purpose and goals\, to understand meaning of ourselves and our society. In particular we will answer three research questions. First how can language tell the story of the purpose and goals\, and interpret the meaning of ourselves and our society? Second\, what are the linguistic devices for expressing meaning\, purpose\, and goal? What are the linguistic cues that can be used to discover them? And third\, how to interpret with linguistic cues the purpose\, goals and meaning of ourselves and our society? To answer these questions\, we underline Language’s nature as a dynamic self-adaptive complex system that is consisted of many linked small worlds and formed by many relations. As such\, language big data or corpora offers continuous sampling over the continuum of time and space. To construct a narrative to explicate this complex system we must adopt and End-to-End paradigm by partitioning the data in more than one way\, e.g.\, both diachronic and cross-sectional. This will allow us to tell a story\, especially how and why it happened and to Interpret it with a shared conceptual framework/ontology. Several examples will be provided to illustrate the points raised. \n  \nBiography: \nChu-Ren Huang is a Chair Professor in the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Focusing on Chinese\, computational\, and corpus linguistics\, he is fascinated by what language can tell us about human cognition and our collective reactions to natural and social environments. He approaches these questions with a deep and comprehensive study of the Chinese language. His recent books on Chinese include A Reference Grammar of Chinese (Cambridge)\, the Routledge Handbook on Chinese Applied Linguistics\, and the Cambridge Handbook of Chinese Linguistics\, His recent papers appeared in Behavior Research Methods; Computational Linguistics; Cognitive Linguistics; Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theories; Humanities and Social Sciences Communications\, Knowledge-based Systems; Language\, Cognition and Neuroscience; Language Resources and Evaluation; Lingua; Natural Language Engineering; PLoS One; etc.

SUMMARY:MLRG Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Ricardo Moutinho \n14:00: Communicating time inside the dome: depicting the periodicity of celestial movements in talk \nCosmological time\, and the connection between time measurement and astronomical events\, are central to astronomy and astronomy communication\, yet people’s use of time concepts in astronomy outreach activities have not received sufficient attention in the research literature. How is time depicted and communicated in outreach contexts? In this paper we present an analysis of the communication of time concepts in planetarium sessions. Participants in these sessions varied: school children between 3 to 12 years old\, families and adults. Data were collected during the summer of 2019. Taking Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (EM/ CA) as our approach\, we analyse instances of actual events in planetarium sessions. EM/CA consider social reality and meaning-making as phenomena achieved and produced by the participants. Transcripts from recordings of these sessions enabled in-depth study of how concepts were communicated. Our analysis reveals that people make sense of time through their in situ work of making an astronomy outreach activity happen. In the data analysed\, a frequent aspect concerning time and time concepts is the connection between time and the periodicity of celestial movements. Time is a ubiquitous concept\, perceived and available interactionally. Therefore\, detailed study of real events can certainly be applied in other areas to reveal how\, in practice\, time is communicated and understood. \n  \nSara Santos \n15:00: Increasing the reasoning demands of a task and task sequencing on the oral production of Chinese learners of Portuguese as a foreign language \nThis study had two aims: (1) investigating the impact of increasing the reasoning demands of a monologic narrative task on the oral performance of Chinese learners of Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) and (2) testing the Simplify Stabilize Automatize Restructure Complexify (SSARC) Model of the Cognition Hypothesis (Robinson\, 2010\, 2011\, 2015\, 2022). Fifty-two university learners of PFL participated in this research. Two comparisons were made: (1) the first one within subjects where two tasks (simple vs. complex) were performed on two conditions (simple-complex sequence/ complex-simple sequence) and (2) the second one among subjects where two tasks were performed vs. the individual performance of a task (simple or complex task). Measures of linguistic complexity\, accuracy\, and fluency were used to quantify learners’ oral production. Robinson’s Cognition Hypothesis has been partially confirmed\, as results showed that task complexity positively affected accuracy\, lexical diversity\, and the amount of coordinate clauses\, but with a negative effect on clause length. Task sequencing had a positive impact on accuracy.

The forum aims to provide a platform for world-renowned scholars from diverse humanities fields to share their research with the FAH community and other UM scholars. All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \n  \nIn this upcoming forum\, we are honored to have Professor Tian Qibo as our guest speaker to deliver a lecture on the topic “The Inheritance and Development of Traditional Chinese Culture 中華傳統文化傳承與發展的幾個問題”. Professor Tian Qibo\, a graduate from the Department of Philosophy of Peking University\, is the Executive Dean of the Jao Tsung-I Institute of Culture Studies at Shenzhen University. He is a nationally recognized leading talent in Shenzhen\, and serves as the Chief Expert for a major project funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China. Additionally\, he holds the position of Vice President of the China Society of Hominology. Prof. Tian\, whose research focuses on ecological philosophy and political philosophy\, has published more than 10 academic works\, including Ecological Justice Research and Reflections and Surpassing on Developmentalism: The Evolution and Innovation of Development Philosophy in Contemporary China\, and more than 80 research papers in academic journals ranging from the Journal of Peking University to Modern Philosophy. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “The Case for Commitment” by Prof. Sarah Paul\, NYU Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/91741709275 \nPassword: 667156 \n  \nAbstract \nTheories of structural\, instrumental rationality generally do not make reference to anything we might call ‘commitment’\, beyond the sense in which all intentions are a kind of settled commitment.  Some views do allow for things like commitment\, resolutions\, or faith to affect how we ought to reason\, but these tend to be characterized as all-or-nothing notions whose role is to preserve inertia by preventing reconsideration and/or desensitizing us to new evidence.  I conjecture that we’re led to this overly narrow conception of commitment by thinking of temptation as the primary cause of giving up on an end prematurely\, and overlooking the importance of obstacles like procrastination and despair.  In my talk\, I will try to articulate a puzzle about acting in the face of uncertainty\, concerning how we should navigate the tensions involved in trying hard to achieve a goal\, while at the same time planning for the possibility of failure and remaining open to giving up.  Such decisions are not only difficult to make\, but also to live with over time.  I argue that our understanding of these dynamics is deepened by bringing in a degreed notion of commitment that involves far more than merely blocking the effects of temptation. \n  \nBio \nSarah Paul is Professor of Philosophy at NYU Abu Dhabi and a Global Network Professor of Philosophy at NYU.  Before joining NYU in 2019\, she was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for nine years.  She is the author of Philosophy of Action:  A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge Press 2021)\, as well as articles that have appeared in Ethics\, Philosophers’ Imprint\, the Australasian Journal of Philosophy\, and Philosophical Studies. She is currently working on a book titled Striving with Jennifer Morton\, under contract with OUP.
