SUMMARY:International Academic Symposium: “Macao: A Place of Memory Where East Meets West” 
DESCRIPTION:The concept of “Place of Memory” was invented by the French scholar Pierre Nora\, renowned internationally for his monumental work Les Lieux de Mémoire. Amid the significant changes now occurring in the humanities and social sciences\, this symposium aims to consider Macao as a “Place of Memory” that bridges East and West\, and past and present. In response to the two major “turns” in historiography—global history and public history—we will explore the following issues from both methodological perspectives and practical case studies.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n1. The Place of Memory—The Possibility of a New Historiography Using Macao as a Paradigmatic Example. The concept of “Place of Memory” is both simple and ambiguous\, natural but also artificial\, the most directly perceptible experience and the most abstract conceptions\, possessing reality\, symbolism\, and functionality. Macao’s places of memory naturally include over thirty visible World Heritage sites\, one of the official languages—Portuguese\, the ubiquitous “egg tarts” on its streets\, and its new visage after the return to Chinese sovereignty. Arguably\, Macao is a living “museum” reflecting the historical legacy of connections between China and the world. This symposium seeks to explore the possibility of a new historiography that transcends the binary divisions of past and present\, East and West\, through interdisciplinary methods.\n  \n\n\n\n2. Globalization—The Possibility of a Global History Centered on Macao. With the unfolding and growing complexity of globalization\, global history faces an opportunity for introspection. Specifically\, how can we inherit and carry on the earlier achievements of global history—such as Dependency Theory and the World System approach? How can we go beyond the global historical research one-sidedly focused on the “movement of materials\,” to strengthen studies on the “movement of people\,” “movement of knowledge\,” and “movement of spirits” in order to construct a holistic global history? All members of the UM community are cordially invited to this splendid event. \nIn this upcoming forum\, we are honored to have Professor Lening Liu as our guest speaker to deliver a lecture on “Pedagogical Grammar: Its Status and Formation in the International Education of Chinese.” Professor Liu is a Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University and co-director of The Certificate Program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. He holds a BA in Chinese Language and Literature and MA in History of Chinese Language from Shaanxi Normal University\, and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Florida. Since 1995\, he has been teaching at Columbia University\, where he served as Director of Chinese Language Program and Director of Confucius Institute. His research interests include syntax\, discourse grammar\, and Chinese language pedagogy\, among others. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – "How Belief Functions" by Dr. Ema Sullivan-Bissett\, University of Birmingham\, United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Link: https://go.um.edu.mo/eds02x2h \n  \nAbstract \nOur beliefs shape our understanding of the world and are key to how successful we are interacting with it. Fortunately\, most of our beliefs get things (at least roughly) right\, perhaps because they are constrained by evidence and not under our voluntary control. But sometimes we go wrong. We are overly optimistic\, we engage in self-deception\, we fail to properly update beliefs we hold dear in response to evidence\, and\, in perhaps the most paradigmatic case of belief gone wrong\, we become deluded. How can we explain what belief is and how it behaves when faced with such a range of cases? In this talk\, I argue that if we want our account of belief to be explanatorily adequate\, we should separate the modal question concerning the nature of belief across possible worlds\, from a more local question concerning the manifestation of its various guises in the actual world. I propose that what is necessary to belief is its motivational role\, and it is this which sets the boundaries of the class of beliefs. But this unifying feature is not where our explanatory gains lie. Rather\, the contingent biological circumstances of belief’s manifestation in the actual world is where we find explanations of the behaviour of garden variety beliefs\, as well as the resources to accommodate various bad beliefs. If we want to explain its various operations\, we must focus on how belief functions. \n  \nBio \nEma Sullivan-Bissett is a Reader in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham. Her research concerns the nature of belief and its connection to truth\, as well as delusional belief formation and implicit bias. She has recently been the Principal Investigator of two research projects: Deluded by Experience (funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council)\, and Conspiratorial Ideation and Pathological Belief (funded by the British Academy). She is the editor of Art and Belief (Oxford University Press\, 2017)\, Belief\, Imagination\, and Delusion (Oxford University Press\, 2024)\, The Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy of Delusion (Routledge\, 2024)\, and the author of Irrationality (Cambridge University Press\, 2025). She has also published in the British Journal of Aesthetics\, Erkenntnis\, European Journal of Philosophy\, Mind & Language\, Philosophical Psychology\, Philosophical Studies\, Synthese\, and others.

SUMMARY:ELC-Spring 2025 i-Learner English for Universities Marathon Competition
DESCRIPTION:This semester\, the ELC is thrilled to present the i-Learner English Marathon Competition! Dive into as many lessons as you can by April 15\, 2025. \nTo join the contest\, students have to complete a minimum requirement of lessons with a score of 70% or above. Students from UE1 to UE3 must complete a minimum of 35 lessons\, while students from E4 to E5 must complete at least 20 lessons to enter the competition. The ELC will select one champion who achieves the highest completion regardless of the level. The champion will be awarded a grand prize worth up to MOP 1\,000. Meanwhile\, the top students at each level who have completed the most will also be awarded amazing prizes for their outstanding efforts. \nThe ELC is also hosting a writing competition for UE 1-3 students. Students should complete the course required lessons (25 lessons for UE1/2\, 12 lessons for UE3)\, and submit the writing assignment for the last lesson. SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – "Fake News and the Dark Side of Speech" by Prof. Carlo Penco\, University of Murcia\, Spain
DESCRIPTION:Microsoft Teams: https://go.um.edu.mo/w7j1ioud \n  \nAbstract \nIn the talk\, I will discuss the topic of disinformation\, starting with the different approaches taken by the United States and Europe to the notion of free speech. After discussing problems that connect free speech with disinformation and fake news\, I will use some basic tools in the philosophy of language to give some clarification of the notion of fake news. First of all\, I will use Austin’s notion of speech act\, and in particular\, I will describe fake news as a kind of speech act falling under the force of assertion. I then will treat some aspects of pragmatics dealing with the idea of common ground (Robert Stalnaker) and accommodation (David Lewis). Through these notions\, I will illustrate with examples how hidden presuppositions can persuade people implicitly\, leading them to easily believe fake news. If there is time\, I will conclude on the problem of the relation between fake news and belief: do people believe in fake news? And if yes\, why? \nBio \nAfter studying in Oxford with Sir Michael Dummett\, Professor Penco taught philosophy of science at the University of Salento (1988–1992) and then became a full professor of philosophy of language at the University of Genoa\, where he was head of the master’s in philosophy and of the doctorate in philosophy. he edited many volumes and collections of classical and contemporary philosophers (Gottlob Frege\, John L. Austin\, Michael Dummett\, Hilary Putnam\, Donald Davidson\, Saul Kripke\, David Kaplan\, John Perry\, and others) and published in many philosophical journals such as Philosophia\, Philosophical Investigations\, and Theoria. He co-organized many international conferences\, including conferences on modeling and using contexts\, a venue for interdisciplinary research with computer scientists\, philosophers\, and other social science experts. He was a visiting scholar at various institutions\, such as the Pittsburgh Center for Philosophy of Science and London’s Institute of Philosophy. Among his main works are an introduction to the philosophy of language and a book on disinformation\, The Dark Side of Speech.

Investigador integrado no Instituto Português de Relações Internacionais da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IPRI-Nova). \nTem sido Professor Convidado do Instituto Universitário Militar (IUM)\, do Instituto da Defesa Nacional (IDN)\, do Instituto Superior de Ciências Policiais e Segurança Interna (ISCPSI) e da Universidade de Coimbra\, e Visiting Professor da La Sapienza-Università di Roma- Itália e da Middle East Technical University (METU) de Ankara-Turquia\, bem como de várias instituições universitárias de Angola\, Brasil e Timor-Leste. \nFoi Adjunto/Técnico Especialista para as Relações Internacionais e o Combate ao Terrorismo no Gabinete da Ministra da Administração Interna (Nov. 2015 – Out. 2017); Assessor do Vice-Presidente do Parlamento Europeu (1999-2004); e Investigador da NATO durante dois anos\, autor do relatório “Russia and NATO’s Enlargement” (2000). \nInvestigador nas áreas das Relações Internacionais\, Geopolítica e Estudos de Segurança especializado nas regiões Euro-Atlântica\, Eurásia e Ásia-Pacífico\, é autor de mais de uma dezena de livros e de inúmeros ensaios e artigos publicados nas revistas da especialidade. Orador convidado de conferências de alto nível\, colabora regularmente com vários órgãos de comunicação social\, analisando e comentando assuntos de relações internacionais\, geopolítica e segurança. \nÉ Licenciado em Relações Internacionais pela Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL)\, Mestre em Estratégia pelo Instituto Superior de Ciências Socias e Políticas (ISCSP) da então Universidade Técnica de Lisboa e Doutorado em Relações Internacionais pela Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra (FEUC). \nEM LÍNGUA PORTUGUESA
