SUMMARY:FAH-DENG: Best English Studies Essay Competition
DESCRIPTION:To all students enrolled in English Department courses: \nHave you written an essay of which you are especially proud? Perhaps an essay written on a topic that particularly interested you and that you worked very hard to develop? The UM Department of English would like to acknowledge that achievement by again recognising the Best English Studies essays this coming Prize Day. \nThe Best English Studies Essay prizes recognise excellence in the work you are doing every day in linguistics and literary studies. Creative writing should not be submitted. The essay you submit should be an academic essay you have written in response to a regular assignment in one of the English Department’s courses in these areas this academic year. The competition is open to students enrolled in English Department courses at any undergraduate level and to essays of any length. Prizes will be awarded for each of the four years of the program\, though the organisers reserve the right not to award a prize if essays are not of sufficiently high standard. Only one submission per student\, please. \nIf you are interested in submitting an essay\, please send an e-mail with the subject line ‘Submission for Best English Studies Essay Competition’ to Damian Shaw at dshaw@um.edu.mo and attach your essay to the message as a Microsoft Word document only. Other formats will not be accepted. Please give your name\, student number\, and year of study (year 1/2/3/4) on the first page of the essay. The deadline for submission is 12:00 noon Thursday\, 14 April 2022. \nWe look forward to reading it.

In an attempt to somewhat redress the balance\, this paper retrieves a core notion from the Zhuangzi\, “disputation” or “distinctions” (bian)\, to reflect upon a contemporary Western debate\, namely about the exclusion of non-Western sources at philosophy departments. The detailed analysis of one anecdote about two states fighting each other on the horns of a snail leads to a view on disputation and its limits. By applying these insights to the “legitimacy of Chinese philosophy” debate\, the Zhuangzi can inspire insights and attitudes that tend to be overlooked.

In this webinar\, one of his translators to Chinese\, Prof. Wang Yuan\, and to Japanese\, Dr. Kinoshita Maho\, will share their personal experiences in translating this author to these respective languages. Saramago is well known for his very particular use of punctuation as well as resorting to many historic references specific to Portugal but many times unknown to the foreign reader. How these two and other challenges that arise from his works can be tackled and possibly resolved for the Chinese and the Japanese readers is what the two invited translators will share with the audience. The focus will specifically be on the novels ‘Journey of the Elephant’ and ‘All the Names’. A general perspective of Saramago’s translations in China and Japan\, as well as the author’s receptivity in both countries will also be discussed. \nFollowing their presentations the session will be open to further discussion on the topics covered in an informal exchange between the invited speakers\, the moderators and the online audience. \nCIELA wishes to thank the José Saramago Foundation\, the Cultural Section of the Portuguese Embassy in Beijing and the Camões Portuguese Cultural Centre\,  at the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo for their assistance in contacting the translators.

In  Poesia digital: teoria\, história\, antologias (Digital Poetry: Theory\, History\, Anthologies)\, Jorge Luiz Antonio presents a panorama of digital poetry history\, from its origins\, in 1959\, until our days with the most advanced and creative innovations. The author shows how the resources of computer science\, apparently cool and exact\, can give new life to the universe of poetry when taking their producers and appreciators to the other artistic directions inside digital culture. This series aims to contribute to the diffusion of current research in the field\, from non-vernacular varieties to creole languages\, to emerging national varieties and L2 learner varieties. Each session will focus on specific regional or national linguistic contexts. In this session the focus will be on Portuguese varieties Mozambique\, Angola\, São Tomé and Príncipe\, and Guinea-Bissau Kriol. \nProfessor Tjerk Hagemeijer will briefly summarise the current linguistic situation of Portuguese in Angola\, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe\, emphasising\, in particular\, the historical process of acquisition and nativization of this language in contexts of contact with typologically distinct languages ​​from the Bantu and Creole groups. The second and main objective of his talk consists in the presentation of a case study on the expression of the argument with the Target theme of verbs of movement in the urban varieties of these three countries. \nDr. Rita Gonçalves will focus on the syntax of Portuguese spoken in Maputo/Mozambique\, Luanda/Angola and São Tomé/São Tomé and Príncipe varieties in process of nativization and historically in contact with Bantu and Portuguese lexified Creole languages\, respectively\, Changana\, Kimbundu and Forro. She will present a case study on the expression of the direct object and the indirect object and will discuss linguistic factors such as animacy and pronominalization\, as well as the inter and intraspeaker variation. \nDr. Chiara Truppi will provide a brief introduction to the Portuguese creole spoken in Guinea-Bissau (Kriol or Guinean) with regard to its general synchronic and diachronic features. Kriol belongs to the group of Upper Guinea creoles which\, together with Cape Verdean and Casamanse\, constitutes the phylogenetic group of Portuguese creoles of Upper Guinea. It has been proposed that Papiamentu\, a (mainly) Spanish-based Caribbean creole\, is also grouped with the Upper Guinean creoles\, with which it may share its origins (Quint 2000\, among others). In view of this\,  her talk will  also focus on the question of  Kriol’s substrate and adstrate languages\, assessing the weight of these languages in its grammar.

SUMMARY:FAH/DPHIL Lecture Series – “Transcultural comparative philosophy: Hui Shi\, Zeno\, and the method of sublation” by Prof. Jana S. Rošker\, University of Ljubljana\, Slovenia
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umac.zoom.us/j/94032576989 \nAbstract \nIn this lecture I will address problems encountered by Western scholars working in the field of Chinese philosophy. The lecture will begin with a discussion of cross-cultural and transcultural methods\, and will highlight some of the most common problems encountered in traditional cross-cultural comparisons. On this basis\, I will propose a new post-comparative approach. I propose the use of a new method\, which I tentatively call sublation. The operation of this method will be demonstrated by a contrastive analysis of the “Flying arrow problem” as interpreted in Zeno of Elea and Hui Shi\, respectively.
