The English Language Centre (ELC) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanity (FAH) successfully held the 2019 Spring English Festival on 18th and 19th March. This semester’s theme was Humanity and Environment, which attracted over 100 UM students joining to practice English and discuss environmental issues.

The goal of the festival was to provide a relaxing platform for students to improve their English language ability and increase environmental awareness by engaging in a series of discussion and creative activities. A wide range of activities was organized during the Spring English Festival, including the English Speech Contest, Green Life Talk, Green Picnic, Aroma Candle Making Workshop, Environment Jeopardy and Eco-Bag Drawing Workshop.

The participated students were given opportunities to improve their English speaking skills and expand their English vocabulary in different fields.  More specifically, during the festival, the students knew how to make an English speech in public by watching the English speech contest. They actively participated in the Green Life Talk, Environment jeopardy, and Green Picnic, discussing environmental and health issues with their fellows and learning related English vocabulary.  Also, the festival included two DIY workshops for UM students: they learned to make their own aroma candles step by step, designed and drew their own recycle bags. During the workshops, they learned the English vocabulary related to aroma candles and recycling, more importantly, they had a platform to share with others in English about their DIY ideas.

Participants were active and fully enjoyed it. They gave positive feedback on our workshops and activities. For example, after the Green Talk, some students told our speaker, Dr. Manuel, that the talk reminded them of the importance of a healthy diet. One participant suggested that we should hold more DIY workshops in the future because she thought our workshops at the festival was fun and useful.

We are pleased to receive positive and constructive feedback from our participants. The ELC will continue to organize more events like this in the future to improve students’ English abilities and skills and boost their confidence in speaking English.
