Organized by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Macau, the second UM Language and Culture Day 2019 continued to feature “Value your own language; Embrace others’ cultures” with a series of activities, including the “International Language and Culture Fair”, various cultural performances and language workshops. The event aims at preserving mother languages, as well as promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.

UM holds the first Language and Culture Day

Highlights of the event include faculties and students joint hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne” in different languages, the international language and culture fair consisting of booth games, food stalls, demonstrations of traditional clothes and cultural performances from different countries and regions. Various cultural activities and language workshops, including “Lazy Sounds? Speak Proper Cantonese”, “Fala Português? – Let’s learn the basics”, “Self-Introduction in Japanese”, Portuguese movie screenings “Macanese in Macau – Renewing Identity” and “Language – Lives in Portuguese”, also attracted a lot of students. In addition, participants had the opportunity to improve their English skillswith “Developing Skills in News” and English Dubbing workshops.         

           

Rodrigo Costa, a student from Cape Verde, said this event was a great platform for students from different counties to show and share their own cultures. Alex Wu from the Department of English said members from all around the world sang

“Auld Lang Syne” in various languages impressed him the most. This event also demonstrated  the multilingualism and cultural diversity of UM –an institution of higher learning providing an excellent environment for language studies. Students  believe the Language and Culture Day provided an opportunity for UM members to experience different cultures through interesting games and hope this meaningful event will continue.
