The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) hosted a series of orientation sessions for over 400 new undergraduate and postgraduate students on 15th and 16th August, 2018 respectively to help them adjust to life at UM.

Chair Professor Honggang Jin, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, led the session “First lecture at FAH” for the young and excited undergraduate students joining the University of Macau. Dean Jin explained UM’s 4-in-1 education model, which aims at nurturing holistic development: students are trained to learn from not only their specialties, but also through general education, internship and research, and the residential college community. Dean Jin also spoke on fostering student’s 4Cs, namely critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration, and how they are crucial to student’s growth in their years of university life and future career.

Professor Victoria Lei, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, spoke on transition from high school to university, introducing relevant rules and regulations and giving some practical advice.

After the first lecture, FAH conducted concurrent sessions of programme briefing by various departments and programmes to prepare students for the new academic year at UM.

At the PhD and MA orientation sessions, Dean Jin began by congratulating and welcoming new students to the family of FAH. She encouraged students to make full use of all learning opportunity, to participate actively, work with their advisors closely and learn from great masters from various disciplines in the faculty.

Following Dean’s speech, Associate Dean Professor Victoria Harrison introduce the rules of PhD and MA programmes and the schedules for completion of their degrees within the normal study period. Current postgraduate supervisors and student association representatives also supported the event and shared their valuable advice and experience.
