48 potential students (F4-F5) from Pui Ching Middle School and high school students from Zhuhai No.1 High School, accompanied by their teachers, visited the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on 17th July, 2018. During the visit, the students took part in a series of immersion activities led by Professor Hong Gang Jin, Dean of FAH and the Assistant Dean, Professor Victoria Lei.
Dean Jin explained to the students the vision of FAH in the regional and global context, and how FAH can equip students with abilities essential to success in the 21st Century. In the Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) Lab simulating real-world situation, students were divided into 6 groups and completed a 10-minute simultaneous interpreting task through teamwork, an experience that helped them appreciate the importance of some of the core components of FAH’s whole-person education in the conference interpreting profession – language expertise, problem solving skills, communication and collaboration. Led by FAH’s postgraduate researchers, through interactive activities the students gained some basic knowledge of how state-of-the-art technologies like eye tracking and functional near-infrared spectroscopy can help enhance understanding of how the human brain works in relation to language.
The students were highly focused and intensely engaged in the activities arranged for them during the 1-hour visit, and enjoyed the experience.
