FAH welcomes over 400 new students of year 2017/2018
Dean Jin encourages students to cultivate “4C” skills for future study and career

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) hosted a series of orientation to welcome over 400 new undergraduate and postgraduate students respectively on 15th and 16th August, 2017. To help freshmen adjust to university life, various sessions with rich contents were arranged.

During the undergraduate orientation, Professor Hong Gang Jin, Dean of the Faculty led the session of “first lecture at FAH” by welcoming and congratulating young and excited students in joining the University of Macau (UM), which was then followed by a brief introduction of the faculty. In her speech, Dean Jin explained the 4-in-1 education, the core value of UM’s goal in nurturing talents with holistic development, which focuses on training students to learn from not only their specialties, but also general education, internship and research and the residential college community. The dean also spoke on fostering student’s 4Cs, namely critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration, and how they are crucial for student’s growth in their years of university life and future career. FAH also conducted concurrent sessions of programme briefing by related departments to prepare students for the new semester at UM.

“Being a PhD student is a way of life,” said Dean Jin at the postgraduate orientation encouraging students to keep reading, keep writing, make full use of UM’s facilities and learn from the great masters before acquiring “great character”. Following Dean’s speech, Associate Dean Professor Shi Jianguo explained the requirements and regulations of the postgraduate programme. Dean Jin reminded postgraduate students to be schedule-oriented and finish their degrees within the normal study period.
