Qiao Liangyu and Wang Qiyue, MA students of the English Department (FAH) competed in the 3rd CTPC Cup All China Interpreting Contest Final. Qiao Liang Yu won 2nd prize while Wang Qi Yue won Excellence Award; their instructor Dr Victoria Lei was granted Distinguished Teacher Award.
The biennial CTPC Cup organized by The Translators’ Association of China is considered the most prestigious oral interpreting contest in China. Close to 1,000 contestants from over 100 institutions of higher learning across greater China took part in the qualifying rounds started last September. 25 entered the final held at Beijing University of International Studies on 8th June, 2014.
Simulating real-life situations, the tournaments comprehensively assessed the contestants’ professional knowledge and skills. The intense schedule of the contest was also putting the contestants’ mental toughness and physical strength to the test. The UM girls demonstrated good sportsmanship throughout. Their morale was significantly boosted by encouragement from the UM community. A couple of their classmates went all the way to Beijing to give support. Many students, teachers, administrative staff members and alumni were cheering our contestants before and during the contest through social media, showing team spirit and enthusiasm for oral interpreting.
During the trip to Beijing Qiao Liangyu and Wang Qiyue also took part in the Simultaneous Interpreting Invitational Tournament on 7th June, each winning an Excellence Award.
