The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) recently held the 13th Portuguese Speech Contest, with the aim of promoting the study of the Portuguese language and increasing the students’ interest in learning Portuguese. Several local higher education institutions, including UM, each sent four best students in Portuguese speaking to participate in the competition.

The finalists made prepared speeches on the topic ‘What is essential is invisible to the eyes,’ a famous quote from Little Prince, written by the French writer Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

The Portuguese Speech Contest is an annual event organised by the Department of Portuguese, with the aim of providing a platform for local college students to showcase their skills in the Portuguese language. At this year’s contest, Cristiano Xie Mingzhi from the Macau University of Science and Technology won the championship, while Lee Li Ruiping from Macao Polytechnic Institute (IPM), Nuno Chan Chi Keong from UM, and Célia Lam Lai San from IPM were the first, second, and third runner-ups, respectively.
