|5 Apr 2016|
Dr. Rhian Atkin is the programme leader for Portuguese and Lusophone Studies at Cardiff University, and a specialist in modern Portuguese literature and culture.
She is a lecturer and researcher specialising in modern and contemporary Portuguese literature and culture, and leads the Portuguese and Lusophone Studies programme at Cardiff University.
She began studying Portuguese as an absolute beginner when she enrolled at university. Studying Portuguese opened up new worlds for her, because the language is spoken across the continents, from Brazil to East Timor. Speaking Portuguese and understanding more about the many Portuguese-speaking cultures is a skill that will be useful for many different careers.
She enjoyed language study when attending Prestatyn High School and Rhyl High School in North Wales. She completed a BA Hons, MA by Research (Distinction) and PhD, all at the University of Leeds. Before joining Cardiff University in September 2014, she was a lecturer in Portuguese and Lusophone Studies at the Universities of Bristol and Manchester, and she has also taught Portuguese language and Lusophone literature and culture at the Universities of Leeds and Liverpool.
