Two University of Macau (UM) students from the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, worked as volunteers at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two UM students benefited greatly from the experience and better understood the advantage of speaking Portuguese. Many working staff at the Olympics did not speak English, so they had to communicate in Portuguese, which improved not only their work efficiency, but also their Portuguese language skills. A total of 50,000 volunteers worked for the Rio Olympic Games.
