Information for Department of Portuguese Study Abroad Students 2015/2016

Dear Students,

Considering you are participating in the Study Abroad to Portugal and Brazil in the second semester of academic year 2015/2016 i would like to submit for your kind information and reference, the following:

We have prepared to assist you with a check-list of documents that you must have ready before December 15, 2015:

All Visa applications will be processed on December 16, 2015, only. Time will be confirmed once available.

Please check and fill-in the attached documents:

  1. Visa Application Form
  2. Checklist
  3. Self Declaration Form

You are required to comply with all UM regulations, including the ones regarding Credit Transfer (article I. of the General Rules Governing Bachelor Degree Programmes).

Once the Final Grades for the first semester of this academic year have been released and you have obtained your Visa to study abroad, the following procedures should be followed before departure:

Before Departure

Submit to our office the following forms:

  1. Emergency Contact Sheet
  2. Student Agreement Form

All students are required to defer their studies for 2015/2. Once both documents are submitted, you are then required to Defer your studies here at UM, by submitting the following forms. These forms will only be approved if all above documents have already been submitted:

  1. Check out form REGForm002 or Check out form REGForm002 (fillable)
  2. Deferment of Studies REGForm008 or Deferment of Studies REGForm008 (fillable)

Study Plan

While studying abroad, please note that you are required to enroll in courses of similar content as the ones in your Portuguese Studies Major study plan, 3rd year, second semester, for a total of 5 courses, corresponding to 15 credit units as follows:

COMPULSORY COURSES

PTSB320-PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE OF THE LUSOPHONE COUNTRIES II

PTSB321-PRACTICAL WRITING FOR PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES II

PTSB322-ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE COMPREHENSION AND PRODUCTION SKILLS II

GE COURSES

PTSB326-MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY HISTORY OF THE PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING NATIONS II

Plus 1 equivalent additional courses chosen from the below list:

PTSB323-TRANSLATION II (CHINESE-PORTUGUESE)

PTSB324-PORTUGUESE LINGUISTICS: GRAMMAR

PTSB325-INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF THE LITERATURE OF THE PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING WORLD II

PTSB327-SPECIAL TOPIC III (any course relevant to the Major, requires prior approval from Prof. Ana Nunes, Program Coordinator)

Students receiving Financial Support from UM must enroll in courses at B2 level. Further information will be sent to students eligible to receive financial support from UM.

Students without financial support from UM, the lowest level they are allowed to enroll is B1. However, they are required to comply with the pre-requisite approved by the FAH to have a placement exam upon their return, before resuming studies. Further information will be sent to students.

VERY IMPORTANT:

Once completed the Study Abroad and upon your return to UM, you are required to send an email message to registry@um.edu.mo requesting to “Resume Studies”.

All resuming studies are required to Pre-enroll for 2016/1, which will probably take place in April 2016. Please visit http://reg.umac.mo/current-students/important-dates/ for regular updates.

REQUESTING COURSE EXEMPTION:

Documents required for submission:

  1. Course Exemption REGForm016 or Course Exemption REGForm016 (fillable)
  2. Supplementary information for application for course exemption
  3. Diploma and/or Certificate with Grades (should include number of credits obtained and course hours)
  4. Course Description

Without any of these document, applications will not be accepted by the Department of Portuguese.

Later on, we will send individual information on each University for your reference, such as contact points and course information.
