The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Macau proudly hosted Michael Puett, a UM Distinguished Visiting Scholar from Harvard University. This significant visit, organised by Senior Instructor Dimitra Amarantidou, featured several impactful events.

Michael Puett, renowned Professor of Chinese History and Anthropology at Harvard University, Director of Harvard’s Asia Center, and author of the best-selling book The Path: What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life, delivered lectures titled “Why Does Ritual Matter?: Theories from Classical China” and “Humans and Gods: The Theme of Self-Divinization in Early China and Early Greece.” These lectures provided profound insights into Chinese cultural heritage and philosophical traditions, as well as a broad perspective on the relation between different traditions, attracting a large audience of students and faculty members.

Additionally, Professor Puett engaged in a roundtable discussion with graduate students of philosophy, offering personalized feedback on their projects. His brief visit to the Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) for the event “Re-Thinking Global Political Theory,” further enriched the academic discourse at UM, leaving a lasting impact on our academic community.
