Aims

The Doctor of Design in Visual Communication Design programme develops designer-researchers capable of producing significant original work, maintaining high academic standards, and effectively communicating with peers, academia and society at large. It carries a mission to promote the advancement of Macao and the Greater Bay Area’s cultural industries to meet its diversified socio-economic development strategies through industry-academia-research cooperation and graduates’ creative practice.

The programme aims to:

  1. Meet Macao and the Greater Bay Area’s objectives in cultural industries to:
    1.1. Promote the advancement of culture, art, science and technology and the economic and social development of the Macao Special Administrative Region;
    1.2. Respond to Macao and the Greater Bay Area’s development strategies for cultural industries and address complex, real-world design challenges from the region.
  2. Achieve the objectives of the University and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities to:
    2.1. Cultivate citizens with innovative abilities and promote academic research through quality student-centered education, key research subjects with international impact.
    2.2. Advance knowledge in Visual Communication Design through interdisciplinary applied research, original design, professional practice and impactful service to the regional, national and international communities.
  3. Prepare graduates for leadership roles in design industry or academia with solid professional skills, applied interdisciplinary research capacities and impactful design work.

The Doctor of Design in Visual Communication Design programme is grounded in the philosophy that design practice is a form of scholarly inquiry that can drive innovation and transform societies. We emphasize the importance of rigorous, practice-led research that results in tangible design outcomes. This programme fosters independent thought, scholarly integrity and the ability to translate research into actionable design strategies. Graduates are expected to be design leaders, capable of shaping the future of design practice and education.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Doctor of Design in Visual Communication Design programme will be prepared to assume roles as both practicing design professionals and design theorists, with advanced expertise in their specialized research domains. The programme will equip graduates with advanced scholarly competencies, including the ability to produce rigorous analytical research and critical discourse in design studies suitable for academic publication. The terminal degree status of this programme will qualify graduates for academic appointments in institutions of higher education, including professorial positions.

Entry Requirements

The Doctor of Design in Visual Communication Design programme follows the general admission rules and requirements of the University with the following additional requirements and application materials:

  • Either one of the degrees (Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree) obtained by the applicant must be related to Arts and Design.
  • Follow the general language requirements of the University, we also accept applicants’ submission of English scores from Mainland China’s Graduate Entrance Examination or CET-4, and have them assessed by the academic unit.
  • CV is necessary for all applicants, detailing awards, exhibitions, design projects, and publication records in Chinese, English, or both.
  • A few writing samples in Chinese, English, or both, such as bachelor’s and master’s theses.
  • After submitting the application via Graduate School’s Online Application System, it is required to submit a design portfolio which should contain 10 to 20 images of the applicant’s work. All submitted portfolio will be counted as portfolio sheets as long as the work is considered representative of your individual abilities.

Graduation Requirements

Students are required to pass the required courses, the Qualifying Examinations and the Thesis Proposal Assessment within 2 years and 2.5 years after their initial registration at the University respectively, and the Thesis Oral Defence which includes the assessment and exhibition of the creative work, thesis writing and oral defence.
