Assistant Professor Yuzhe LI from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Japanese, has been awarded the 2024 Grant for Japan-related Research in Asia by the Sumitomo Foundation.

This program supports high-quality Japan-related research conducted by researchers in East and Southeast Asia. The program aims at enhancing mutual understanding between Japan and other Asian societies through scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. The Sumitomo Foundation aims to contribute to solving global issues through academic support in fields such as science, the environment, culture, and international exchange.

Dr. LI’s awarded project is titled “A Multifaceted Analysis of the Individualization of Japanese Vocabulary Learning through Generative AI Technology.” This research explores how generative AI tools, such as DeepSeek and ChatGPT, are changing vocabulary learning in Japanese language education. It aims to clarify the role and impact of generative AI in supporting learners through customized and interactive language experiences.

The 2024 round of the program received 891 applications from 21 countries and regions. With only 66 projects selected, the success rate stood at approximately 7.4% (13.5:1), showing the highly competitive nature of this grant. This is also the first time a researcher from the University of Macau has been selected since the foundation’s public records began in 2015.
