Representatives from 20 local schools attended the academic talk held by FAH

To enhance the collaboration and exchange between local schools and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) of the University of Macau, FAH organized on December 11, 2024 an event that included an academic talk, a discussion session, and a dinner, which was attended by 26 representatives from 20 local secondary schools.

 

The event was hosted by Professor Victoria Lai Cheng Lei, Assistant Dean of FAH. Chair Professor Zhang Jian, Associate Dean of the Faculty, delivered a welcoming speech highlighting Macao’s significant historical role as China emerges as a global entity. He emphasized that the integration of diverse cultures has profoundly shaped Macao’s history, stating that “although Macao is small in terms of natural space, it possesses a vast cultural landscape that can accommodate the world. Macao serves as a bridge connecting geographical China and the global community, reflecting both the cultural dimensions of China and the world.” He affirmed that FAH of the University of Macau would continue to uphold this cultural tradition and spirit, fulfilling its mission to connect the East and the West, and to bridge China with the world through its research and teaching.

 

The lecture was presented by Distinguished Professor Lin Shaoyang from the Department of History, titled “Learning History and Understanding Modernity: The Interweaving and Influence of Chinese and World History since the Sixteenth Century.” He explored the intertwining impacts of Chinese and world history since the sixteenth century and discussed the importance of studying history in education. Prof. Lin’ talk also focused on helping students broaden their historical perspectives, fostering critical thinking, and assisting students to analyze contemporary issues from a historical lens. He underscored that understanding history is crucial for comprehending today’s world.

 

During the follow-up discussion session and dinner, representatives from various schools engaged in lively exchanges with the speaker and members of FAH, furthering dialogue on the topics presented.
