Professor Yasushi Sugimura from Nagoya University was invited to deliver a lecture entitled “Teaching Japanese particle through imagery” at the Department of Japanese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau on 30 October, 2024. All the academic staff and over 70 students from the Department of Japanese attended the lecture.

From the perspective of imagery, Professor Sugimura explained the four sets of Japanese case particles that are difficult to distinguish in Japanese language learning. Taking into consideration of the perspective from Chinese native language learners, he analyzed the contexts of each set of case particles and their corresponding expressions in Chinese. The lecture utilized a large number of everyday examples, images, and advertising posters to explain the subtle differences between synonymous case particles. In the final stage of the lecture, Professor Sugimura addressed specific questions from students and teachers regarding the usages and the teaching methods of Japanese case particles.
