The Department of History held an online workshop entitled “Worldviews Displaced: Maps and Mapping between Western Europe and East Asia (16th & 17th centuries)” on August 27 & 28.
The workshop brought together a diverse group of senior and junior scholars from East Asia, Europe, and North America with the aim of surveying the state of the field with regard to the geographical works, maps, and globes that were produced in East Asia in the late 16th and 17th centuries as a result of the activities of European Jesuit missionaries. As part of this project, the workshop gathered original scholarship in English for the publication of an edited volume, which will bring a more globally and regionally connected perspective to a familiar story of cultural contact.
The Worldviews Displaced workshop was organized and led by Mario Cams of the Department of History, in close cooperation with Elke Papelitzky (NYU Shanghai/KU Leuven). The participants included Nicolas Standaert (KU Leuven), Richard Pegg (MacLean Collection, Chicago), Vera Dorofeeva-Lichtmann (CNRS, Paris), Yang Yulei (ZJU, Hangzhou), Cheng Fangyi (SYSU, Guangzhou), and other well-known scholars in the field.
